Would You Watch a NEW 'Wizard of Oz' Sequel?
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, RumorMonger, Remakes and Sequels
By: Peter HallWarner Brothers wants to make a sequel to the 1939 Victor Fleming adaptation of Frank L. Baum's The Wizard of Oz. On the surface that seems all well and good, but the original news source, an article from the UK's Daily Express, shares a few surprising details that make this a contender for an award I just made up: Most Unexpected Film News I've Read in a While.
It's no surprise that the WB would want to send Dakota Fanning over the rainbow, but it is kind of shocking to learn they've no intention of a remake. The fifteen year old Fanning would play a grand daughter of Dorothy who, for an unknown reason, ends up in the land of the Tin Man. But before that gives you visions of Robin Williams heading back to Neverland in Hook, take a gander at this quote from one of the film's producers: "You've still got Dorothy trapped in an odd place, but she's much closer to the Ripley character from Alien [Sigourney Weaver] than a helpless singing girl."

Is it time for a Wizard of Oz sequel, or is this one property that shouldn't be touched?

Another reboot eh said...
There was a sequel it was called "Return to OZ" and featured many of the characters left out of the original but that were in the books(There were several books from the early nineteen-twenties I discovered as a kid). There is no need for a new sequel or prequel or reboot.Something just are better left standing on their own(Although the 1939 version was a remake, because they had filmed a silent version)

This isnt a musical remake to the old movie we grew up to. Its probably going back to he source material. As I understand it, the very under-rated "Return to Oz" movie from the 80s included storylines and characters from several of the different Oz books that followed the Wizard of Oz. In all acuality, the movie we all know and love as the Wizrd of Oz really is nothing like the book itself!! I would gladly welcome a sequel if fro mthe original books, not a fabricated money scheming sequal to the movie. Look up Oz on wikipedia...there are literally Dozens of Oz books written by Baum. I hope they eventually even use the "new" mythology brought forth in the "Wicked" prequel. No, it was not by Baum, but adds a fresh new, darker twist to the old childrens story.

This almost sounds like a similar story line to a mini-series SciFi did a while back called "Tin Man".

Personally, I think that the WB might be going a little over board with movies. Don't get me wrong, I love going to the movies and I love watching them, but some stuff doesn't make a whole lot of since.

As long as it's not a musical, I'm in. I hate Wizard of Oz so much; to me it's the most over rated film ever. From the little we know of this new one, it may not be bad at all.

You know what I'd like to see? A film version of "Oz Squad". It was an early-90's indie comic and, like most stuff from that era, was pretty "grim & gritty". From Wikipedia: "Its premise is that Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion are now part of "Gale Force", a Mission Impossible type organization working to protect Oz from all manner of bizarre threats. Created and written by Steve Ahlquist, the series is complex and clever, playing with the mythology that Baum had created in the original children's books and updating it for a more adult audience." Of course there's no chance that this will ever happen.

I have watched the Wizard of Oz ever since I was a little girl. It is my all time favorite movie. I collect all kinds of wizard of oz stuff. I can't wait to share it with my granddaughter when she is old enough. The movie does not need another sequel, it is better left alone. It's a classic, you don't make a sequel to a classic like this one. It could never come close to being as good as the one we grew up with.
