'Hancock' Will Fly Again in a Sequel

The superheroic team of Peter Berg, Will Smith, and Columbia have been bantering about a Hancock sequel since last July, so it's no surprise that it's gone and become official. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Columbia has hired Adam Fierro and Glen Mazzara to bring back the boozy immortal. Berg is expected to return as director, though THR is mute as to whether Charlize Theron or Jason Bateman will be reprising their roles. (Given the way the last film ended, it could really go either way, couldn't it?)
While the plot is being kept under wraps, Smith already gave a few hints last winter. Smith says that the Hancock universe was "full of unexplored characters" and that we would meet them in a sequel. He certainly was a character with a long history, and a whole "last son of Krypton" thing going (I'm trying not to spoil anything), so I could see a sequel venturing into some kind of Phantom Zone territory. Or maybe they'll go downright Biblical with his immortal lineage. Who knows! It's too early to know!
When I last reported on a return to Hancock, a lot of you were intrigued by the idea of a prequel exploring his illustrious and godlike past than a sequel starring a reformed and purposeful hero. I guess all hope of a true origin story is shot, but maybe they will cater to your comments, and fill it full of flashback sequences! After all, Smith has The Last Pharaoh on his slate, so they'll have plenty of ancient sets and costumes available!

I enjoyed the original quite a bit and I, for one, would much rather see a sequel than an origin story. We got enough back story in original--we don't need to know what he had for breakfast on the fateful day that he [redacted].

I liked the movie too and feel as though I may be one of the few. It was different and they were smart and kept it short. The ending was kind of lame as well as his costume, but I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel. I don't know what they would do though because the whole appeal of the character was that he was so messed up and the cleaned himself up at the end.
And I have never seen a woman look as good in a movie as Charlize Theron did in this one.

It depends on what version of Hitchcock they go with in the sequel. The very clever, interesting, fun spirit from the first 2/3 of the film? Or the ridiculous, half-assed, nonsensical last third that completely destroyed the original?

I wasn't a fan of Hancock. I guess I just didn't understand why it tried to turn serious for that last 1/3 and had no central villain. (I'm sure the writers would claim that the conflict was with Hancock's inner demons) I'm sick of prequels. I can't remember one that turned out satisfying because we already know the sequel.

I liked the first one (but do agree the first 2/3 was better than the last 1/3). I think it depends on if we get Spiderman 2 / Superman 2 / X2 or Spiderman 3, Superman 3 (or 4), or X-Men 3.

The last 1/2 of Hancock ruined what was actually pretty interesting in the first 1/2. They set up a good character who could have had an interesting character arch, but then they decided to just blow stuff up.

I loved Hancock and am very happy to see the sequel moving along. I prefer a sequel over a prequel. I would like to know more about his past and what he is though.

liked the movie - like all of Berg's movies - but I see no point in a sequel. Lame idea.

I couldn't agree more with those above who felt the first 2/3 were ruined by the last 1/3. - If they have a solid story a sequel 'might' be fun.
