Fan Rant: Rob Zombie to Remake 'The Blob' Minus the Blob
Filed under: Horror, Remakes and Sequels
I've been patient with Rob Zombie's movies, but for some reason he seems to be exempt from that societal rule which says "Be good at your job, or at least try to improve as often as you can." I've got nothing personal against the guy, I actually do dig his music, and I'm sure he's a wonderful human being where his loved ones are concerned. But when it comes to making movies, the guy's dancing around his own filthy vacuum. His films are actually painful to watch, not because of the oh-so-extreme violence and hilariously over-baked profanity, but mostly because of the stunningly base and amateurish filmmaking skills on display. But apparently someone with a big lump of cash disagrees with me: Variety is reporting that Rob Zombie has just signed a deal to remake the 1958 sci-fi monster movie classic The Blob. Says the clearly astute filmmaker: "My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing -- that's the first thing I want to change."
To which I'd respond ... Hey, too bad it's THE BLOB you were just hired to remake, dude! If giant red blobby creatures are too good for a man stage-named "Zombie," then perhaps he should try remaking something like ... The Funhouse. Far as I can recall there are no blob monsters in that flick.
More nerdly fury at Horror Squad!

So things are better off left alone - the blob is one of them. I am not a horror buff when it comes to movies, but I do know that I tremendously enjoyed the original.
That being said, to say they are remaking the blob without "the blob" is a bit unsettling. What is it going to be about??? A killer running around a small town with Jello covered all over his body?
While I do recognize Rob Zombie's movies to be what they are - Rob Zombie's movies, I've yet to get upset about his efforts in film-making - Until Now. Don't ruin another classic. Your senseless violence is comparable to Michael Bay's needless explosions.

The Blob was already remade once in 1988 I think, and it wasn't bad...

Yeah, and the remake didn't have a "Big red blobby thing" like the 50's version either. I think that's what Zombie was trying to say is that it wasn't going to be a slow, oozing, barely threatening gelatinous mass chasing Stevie McQueen.

Rob Zombie will butcher this remake just like he did with Halloween. Halloween II was even worse then the remake I thought. I did enjoy House of a 1000 corpses and The Devils Rejects however and I think that he could make a pretty good remake of Funhouse. I would like to see that actually but I hope he does not stay on as The Blob director for a remake.

Zombie's film have never been great - I'm usually uncomfortable during them - but I'd have interest in seeing his freaky version of 'The Blob' versus some TV director rushing out a shot-for-shot remake. Still, no idea where all that hostility is coming from, Scott! We're all numb from the parade of so-so remakes.
