Monday Night Poll: How Would You Grade Summer 2009?
Filed under: Fandom, Summer Movies, Polls
If the unofficial end of summer arrives with Labor Day Weekend, then all we've got left are a few more days to discuss the summer that was before she rides off into the sunset with her billions in box office dollars and a few more sequels already green-lit. But how does she compare to the summers of the past? A quick glance shows us that, unlike 2008, this summer we didn't get a Dark Knight or an Iron Man ... though we did get a Star Trek and a Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. We didn't get a Wanted, a Hellboy 2 or an Incredible Hulk, but we did get some smaller, smarter sci-fi films like Moon and District 9. Pixar came through yet again, but the rest of this summer's animation slate seemed pretty weak. Same goes for comedies, with the exception of The Hangover, which kinda made up for the disappointing Land of the Lost, Funny People, I Love You, Beth Cooper, I Hate Valentine's Day, The Ugly Truth and The Goods. Sam Raimi returned with a pretty awesome horror flick in Drag Me to Hell, though, and Harry Potter rolled in with what was perhaps his most entertaining installment of the franchise. G.I.: The Rise of Cobra surprised some with its fun, cheesy vibe, and Wolverine did just enough to score himself another go-round in Japan.
I'd say the summer turned out pretty well overall, especially for sci-fi fans. It was full of bold visions, spectacular set pieces and grand stories -- all of it tied together in a wobbly knot and served to us as an escape from the heat, from the office, from the kids, from our parents and from our lives for a little while. But that's my opinion. What's yours?
In honor of school starting up again, get out those number two pencils and let us know how you'd grade the summer of 2009?

So far, this movie year is behind last years in terms of quality movies.
The good movies I saw this summer (in no order):
Star Trek, Up, The Hangover, The Hurt Locker, Public Enemies, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, 500 Days of Summer, G.I. Joe
The not-so-good movies I saw this summer (in no order):
Wolverine, Ghost of Girlfriend's Past, Terminator: Salvation, Night at the Museum 2, Land of the Lost, Transformers 2, The Ugly Truth, Funny People, The Time Traveler's Wife
Still have yet to see, but will see:
District 9, Inglorious Basterds, Taking Woodstock, Moon, The Brother's Bloom, Angels & Demons, Drag Me to Hell.
Overall, the bad movies outweigh the good, so I'm giving it a solid 'C.'

A really poor summer film wise. Public Enemies was disappointing. Most of the big blockbusters were even more brainless than usual - apart from Star Trek which was a great reboot- and you had to really look hard for good stuff.
Moon, Frozen River, Mary and Max, Hurt Locker, Inglorious Bastards were my top 5 in that order!!!

The Good: Star Trek, The Hangover, Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds (I know-really sticking my neck out with these daring choices right? )
The Bad: TROTF, Night at the Museum (I have kids who made me do it)
The Ugly: The Goods (one of the worst ever-should have walked out and had my sanity checked for going in the first place)
The Disappoints compared to the hype: Taking of Pelham 123, Public Enemies, Funny People,
Never Saw but will eventually with low expectations: Wolverine, Terminator Salvation, Gi Joe
Never Saw but should have: District 9, Bruno,
What was I thinking: Ugly Truth (walked out), The Proposal (made it to the credits but it still sucked and both were free)
Overall, I'd say a C+ to B-

Here's the ones I saw and order of greatness:
5. Wolverine
4. District 9
3. Inglourious Basterds
2. Up
1. Transformers 2
I thought there was great variety this summer. It's time they put out more Oscar contenders in the summer.

For me, the best of the summer was Inglourious Basterds. So much fun. I also really liked Moon, District 9, Star Trek, and Up.
Overall, I was disappointed. I was expecting more out of Termintor Salvation considering how good the visuals looked. Same goes for Transformers (I actually kinda liked the first one, but 2 was simply terrible). Potter was good for the 1st half before it fell into the same trap as they always do - directionless action. The Wolverine bomb was unexpected; I though it had a chance. Let's face it - GI Joe was a bad movie, and the fact it was remotely popular simply cause it wasn't as bad as we expected is a testament to the weakness of the summer.
I give it a C.

Since I DIDN'T see Transformers 2 but DID manage to catch Moon, District 9, Trick 'R Treat and The Hurt Locker in the same month, I have to give this summer an A. It's hard to beat any summer that featured Dark Knight and Iron Man but this was a surprisingly good follow-up.

It would've been a D if it weren't for District 9! Star Trek was good but not excellent, and Public Enemies was sadly underwhelming. That's why I'm looking forward to Fall!

Up and Drag Me to Hell came out on the same day. From that moment on, this summer could not fail. It did its darnest. For about two months there was very little enticing me into the theater (still want to see Moon and Hurt Locker), but District 9 and Inglorious Basterds ensured that this summer was a good one. Much better than usual. Not quite the Wall-E, Dark Knight, Hellboy 2, Iron Man, Kung Fu Panda extravaganza that was last summer, but it was pretty darn close.

Last summer was one of the great movie summers as far as I'm concerned, and that's going all the way back to the 1980s. This year was one of the least interesting.

My favorite movies of this past summer were (in no particular order) ...
Inglourious Basterds
The Hurt Locker
(I'm not normally a war movie watcher, but these films were awesome...)
Up
Star Trek
District 9
Still, I keep thinking about the glorious Summer movie season of 2008. Did we ever get lucky with all of the good movies which showed up at the multiplex (Wall-E, Dark Knight, Hellboy 2, Iron Man, Kung Fu Panda, The Incredible Hulk). Compared to 2008, I give the 2009 Summer movie season a C-.

I think this summer has been great, so many good films. The Best- (1) Inglorious Basterds (2) UP (3) District 9 (4) Moon (5) The Hurt Locker (6) Funny People (7) Public Enemies (8) Drag Me to Hell (9) The Brother's Bloom (10) 500 Days of Summer. Worst- (1) The Ugly Truth (2) Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen (3) Wolverine- the biggest disappointment for me, its sad to see a great character wasted. (4) Orphan (5) Angels and Demons.

I was very disappointed at the selection not ony this summer but for the past several years. My friends and I go out every Sunday to lunch and a movie but when there aren't any good movies it is just lunch. Sometimes we go a couple of months without going to a movie because there is nothing we want to see. It is sad really if you think about it. There are so many fiction bestselling authors whose books would be amazing films and yet Hollywood makes movies that are the 3rd 4th 5th in a sequel that get more boring every year or they make slasher movies that require no imagination or they make remakes of great old movies. I think that is pretty lazy and makes me wonder about the writing talent in Hollywood. What is the problem? We could have some outstanding action films with heroes that America really needs at a time like this from such writers as Vince Flynn; Brad Thor; & David Hagberg but instead we get movies about gansters and criminals just what we need to glorify. Why can't America have a James Bond to put their hopes in? There are plenty of great thriller writers who are writing plots that are occuring right now. What about political thrillers or mysteries? I find I have to go to the BBC or PBS masterpiece theater to find something to watch. The baby boomers are the largest purchasing group in America yet Hollywood doesn't make movies we want to see. What they make is trash with poor plots and poor characters. The few movies I went to that were packed this summer were: Angels & Demons; Harry Potter; and Julie & Julia. All good but again we went weeks without anything to go to. Pretty sad!
