The Best Superhero Movie of ALL TIME Tournament! Round #9!
Round 8 was NOT a good one for the X-Men! A reluctant superhero defeats an enthusiastic one! And ... OK, enough silly exuberance. Here are last round's results: Batman Begins beat down on X-Men, Unbreakable exsanguinated Blade, Spider-Man showed off all of Superman 2's bizarre tonal inconsistencies, and Iron Man smacked the holy snot out of X-Men 2. Which means we have only eight movies remaining! If you were going to invite your grandmother to vote in only ONE round of the tournment, this is the one!

Superman (1978) vs. Spider-Man 2 (2002)

The Dark Knight (2008) vs. The Incredibles (2004)

Batman Begins (2005) vs. Unbreakable (2000)

Iron Man (2008) vs. Spider-Man (2002)

Superman (1978) vs. Spider-Man 2 (2002)

The Dark Knight (2008) vs. The Incredibles (2004)

Batman Begins (2005) vs. Unbreakable (2000)

Iron Man (2008) vs. Spider-Man (2002)

Yeah Dark Knight is definitely going to beat spiderman 2 in the final round
When you think about it really has earned it when most of the competition was lazy and uninspired
This was a cool idea but it might have been implemented to soon since the genre is so young (30 years) compared to others

Actually, Spiderman 2 vs. TDK would happen in the semi finals as they are both in the same bracket.
TDK would have to face Iron Man, Batman Begins, Unbreakable or Spiderman 1 in the finals.
Also, it looks like Supes is catching up to Spidey, so it's possible that neither film based on our friendly neighborhood web slinger will advance.

The Joker is a better villain than Doctor Octopus, but Spider-Man is stronger, faster, (BETTER) than Batman and has a cooler red/blue costume than his. Plus Spidey's black suits from Spider-Man 3 and the black/white one from the comics looks greater than any of Bruce Wayne's bat uniforms. There's too much of this "boring, dull real world" in "The Dark Knight" movie; seems like it's shown much more than Batman who's really isn't exciting like Spidey is anyway. Now, I know that you may like Batman more, but I don't understand that because if you really had Spidey's super-human abilities, I Highly doubt that you would even give a care about Batman's limited human abilities. The truth is hidden in the last sentence. Spider-Man 2 really went in-depth into Peter Parker's character, Otto Octavius's character, and Mary Jane Watson's character compared to the Joker (even though I loved Heath Legder's portrayal of the character) and Batman's Bruce Wayne character. I think it sucks and it's stupid that Dark Knight ended with Rachel Dawes dying; that just makes Bruce Wayne a lonely, sad person who really isn't overall popular because of that; nobody really doesn't want to be lonely and sad, even if some people relate to that, right?

I might be done. Unbreakable is out. Spider-Man is out. This tournament no longer has any meaning for me.

I know I'm the minority here. But the poll is for the best superhero movie of all time. The Dark Knight was more of a supervillain movie to me than superhero, ie it's more about the Joker and Two-Face than it is about Batman.
That being said, my vote went to The Incredibles. Best superhero movie of the two.

I have a good idea. Let's all vote for the most recent movie. Because SFX + CGI = Good Movie.

The comment he was making was that all of the movies that won are the more recent releases of the two options. What is the difference between Iron Man and Spider-Man, with the exception of the release date? Spider-Man came first. It set down the boundaries for what makes a good superhero film this decade, much more than Blade or X-Men did. I have no beef with a person choosing Iron Man over Spider-Man, but 76%-24%? All that is is how current the release was.
As we speak, Batman Begins is beating Unbreakable by 50%. 50%! That's blatant fanboyism right there. Batman Begins is the same movie as Iron Man and Spider-Man. It offers very little that is truly unique to the genre. The Dark Knight does more than it does, but my guess is that TDK is still fresh in our minds and powered Begins to such a huge victory. That or people just really want the movies that lean towards a more traditional superhero approach. The vibe I'm getting is that the general populous that visits this site is voting on how current and traditional the films are, not on quality.

@Ryan: I didn't like Unbreakable and haven't voted for it this entire, and yet it keeps winning. I really liked Superman Returns and I'm not even a fan of Superman (it has been pointed out that's why I liked it) and it's long gone. The Incredibles has my vote for Overall Best out of everything so far, and now it's getting beaten by The Dark Knight, which I thought was overrated, at best.
Taste is entirely subjective. Do not decide everyone's taste must be broken just because they do not agree with you.

I agree that taste is subjective. Quality, on the other hand, is in many ways objective. There are set ways of judging the quality of a film. Every movie on this list is good genre entertainment. The problem that I had was with the incredible disparity in the voting. Movies that should be incredibly close are getting blown away, for what appears to me to be no good reason, except that the movies that are winning are more current. Perhaps you don't like Unbreakable. That's fine. But can you really argue that Iron Man is better than Spider-Man on this scale? In 2002, when Spider-Man raked in 400 million dollars domestic and a 90% Tomatometer, would it have gotten blown out like it is now?
I also agree that The Incredibles deserved a better showing. That was the vote I struggled with the most (although my vote did end up going to The Dark Knight, because ultimately I think it is the more ambitious film). But if The Incredibles came out this summer, and was getting drooled over like Up is, would it be losing to the Dark Knight as badly as it is. If people were still speculating whether Shyamalan was the next Hitchcock, would Unbreakable have been beaten by yet another origin story? The finals are destined to be Iron Man vs. The Dark Knight. I rest my case.

I agree. I am saddened that so many people find Dark Knight the better movie. It's great, sure. They both are. But Incredibles is PERFECT.
Yeah, I said it. It's PERFECT.

Aw man, I had a seriously hard time choosing between Iron Man and Spider-Man 1 because they are practically on even playing grounds. I really love both origin stories. Harry is dealt with well in movies 1 and 2 on the supporting cast part, but I never liked Kirsten as MJ and never really bought into Maguire as SM.
And unlike Maguire's SM, Downey is the perfect Iron Man and he is perfectly complemented by Terrence Howard. And yet, I prefer Willem Dafoe's presence (character and acting) in SM versus Jeff Bridges' overall shallow and one-dimensional presence. Dafoe was more engaging.
But back to love interest: Paltrow's Pepper Potts was SLIGHTLY more interesting than Dunst's inconsistent portrayal as SM's lover, but still again, Pepper Pots was not that great to begin with...and yet at the same time I feel like she complemented Downey, both as an actor and as a character, better than the Dunst/Maguire relationship, thereby giving the slight edge to IM.
Then there's the action. I realize it's edging to be almost a decade old already, but SM holds up surprisingly well...even if the Green Goblin's costume does not. While I was, and still am, part of the minority that liked (not loved) the costume, it doesn't hold up well. Yet there are still moments of greatness with several tense fights and a still gripping climactic fist-fight between Peter and Norman that is all mood: no music, no powers, and all in an abandoned warehouse. Some of the best moments are these more enclosed, personal moments of action such as when the two fight in a burning building. That scene is still badass today. And yet, Iron Man kicks all kinds of ass on its own, but far too few action scenes. Those that are there, including his famous cave breakout, outrunning the jets, and the final battle, are all perfectly paced and executed (especially the jet scene). In the end, it's a near tie for me--Iron Man has some superior scenes, but it needed more to fully trump SM's action.
As origin stories, they're both completely evenly matched in my opinion. Both combine comedy and tragedy, love and death, humor and sorrow--all with great ease. Two scenes that come to mind are Tobey's billboard smash and Stark's recorded footage of all his tech-snafus.
So yeah, tough choice for me. I chose Iron Man in the end because it is a more complete package and doesn't have many of SM's faults, though IM is by no means perfect itself. Also, my vote for Iron Man also acknowledges that that film is only as good as it because of its incredible predecessors like Spider-man and X-Men.
It's a long explanation, I know. But this decision can't be taken lightly :D

really well said denjmad! I loved the breakdown. I wasnt in love with Kirsten's portrayal of MJ, but i didn't despise her as many others have. I also felt that Tobey was geeky enough to pull of the "woa, wtf, this is happening to ME!?" feel. Perhaps too well, as he could never seem to step away from that feel, and getting the girls he does seems unbelievable.
You are right though. Robert was PERFECT for Tony Stark, while Tobey wasn't quite the perfect fit, though I can't think of many that would be a better spiderman/peter parker.

"Spiderman 2" beating out "Superman" is what truly suggests an appalling lack of taste. Peter Parker montaging it to a BJ Thomas song made popular by "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance" beating Jor-El's final sad yet hopeful look, as he stands with Lara, his wife, watching a young Kal-El enter the cosmos, the last hope from a doomed planet called Krypton. "Spiderman 2" was a good film, but anyone who thinks it's better than "Superman" needs to be smacked with a sock full of shit.

I agree! If people want to talk about the precedent of setting up the "superhero" film, it is Superman the Movie. From the superhero's musical theme (which is still one of the best), to the superhero's conflict of when to do wrong so that things are right. Honestly I think the Spiderman movies are second rate to Superman. BTW, I'm voting TDK all the way...

Consider me smacked with shit, then, because having watched Superman recently, I think it starts off great, but once Supes arrives in Metropolis it quickly turns into a dated, corny, and… dull mess.
