Will Pixar Make a Marvel Movie?
Filed under: Disney, Fandom, Newsstand, Comic/Superhero/Geek

Ever since the news broke early this morning that the Walt Disney Co. had acquired Marvel Entertainment for upwards of $4 billion in cash and stocks, a number of additional details have emerged via a shareholder conference call regarding the deal. Now, first, it's important to understand that Disney just doesn't nab every Marvel character in existence when it comes to movies, since the rights to some characters -- like Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four and The X-Men -- are in the hands of other studios. Also, Paramount still has five more Marvel movies to distribute under their deal (Thor, Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Captain America and one other), so don't look for Disney to begin screwing around with those (or any) upcoming Marvel projects just yet. Eventually, though, Disney wants to become the sole distributor for all of Marvel's films.
However, when you step away from those projects currently in development is when this deal gets very interesting. On the conference call earlier, they noted that Pixar's John Lasseter has already taken a meeting with the Marvel folks to begin brainstorming different collaborations, and apparently that meeting went extremely well -- which means there's a very good chance we're going to see Pixar's name on an upcoming film featuring Marvel characters.
But which Marvel characters lend themselves perfectly to the Pixar format? That's your call -- which superheroes would you like to see in a Pixar movie? Do you think now will be the time to create that Incredibles sequel and include Marvel villains? Perhaps The Incredibles could square off against ... The Incredible Hulk!? Oh, the cross-over potential is mouth watering -- whaddya think?

Honestly, I'd much rather keep the Incredibles' universe separate from the Marvel universe. A stand-alone Pixar/Marvel film could be spectacular.

agreed! The Incredibles has a rich universe that they can explore. But a Pixar/Marvel creation would be superb. Some of the harder to film characters at Marvel would be great to see animated.
Also, I would like to point out that John Lasseter is making his first adventure into live action, and I bet Marvel can help a bit there.

Agreed. The Incredibles already presents a world rich with possibilities -- a Marvel cross-over would cheapen the imaginative potential.

I think Fantastic four would be perfect for Pixar. Fuck the incredibles that somewhat ripped off F4.
But F4 will happen only if fox gives up the rights to it. They have only 2 years left till expriry.

"Runaways" seems like the obvious choice, doesn't it? It's kid-centric, takes place somewhat separately from the central parts of the Marvel Universe, has plenty of things like flying, shape-shifting, and pet dinosaurs that might be hard to do on a live-action budget. The original writer of the comic book, Bryan K. Vaughan, has worked on a script, and although Marvel Pictures has been developing it, it's not necessarily part of the Paramount deal.

Yes this would be absolutely perfect. I think it would be too hard for them to cast this as a live action flick. With pixar producing it I know it would be great. Though I don't think I would want them to tone it down with the gay characters or deaths or anything. I'm not sure Pixar would be willing to do a PG-13 movie

if they do it should be separate from the Incredibles, since they took bits of super hero stories from a bunch of different comics..
I think they should just make 'Incredibles 2' since that was more fun then any other super hero story.

I thought the Incredibles was a gentle parody of the Marvel/DC comic world. I don't see a rich crossover opportunity

Marvel movies should always be live action. Pixar is fine for the kiddie movies it does, some of them are even entertaining to me, but making Spider Man or Wolverine or any Marvel hero or villain a disproportionate, angular cartoon would completely ruin any appeal a movie about one of those characters would have.

Actually, Pixar already has one live-action movie in the pipeline, so just because you want Marvel movies to be live action doesn't preclude Pixar from tackling one.

"Pixar: "kiddie" movies or films incorporating adult themes? Discuss. However, I'd agree that Marvel should stay Marvel and shouldn't mix with any already-established Pixar property.

Yes, because Marvel has not once ruined their characters. Never... not once... not at all.... it's never ever happened....

Disney/Pixars's latest film release "Up!" was by no means a "kiddie" movie. It was a very touching, rich story, that had some things in it that could amuse children, not a movie with some things in it to entertain adults as "kiddie" movies generally are.

Silver Surfer. Do it right -- Jack Kirby style, with a REAL Galactus, not some friggin' storm cloud.
Dr. Strange could lend himself to a Pixar project, too. Dormammu and Eternity, ala Steve Ditko.
NOW we're talkin'!

I am so happy about the possibilities, just with the Pixar connection. No other animated company out there makes more sense then Pixar animating a Marvel film. While I'm all for life action versions of these classic Marvel characters. The idea of them creating The Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer or The Inhumans in full Digial glory is beyond my wildest dreams... yeah ...

Paul, it should be noted that Andrew Stanton is behind "John Carter of Mars" and that it isnt an official Pixar film. They are helping here and there, but it is going to be marketed and released as a Disney film, which it is.

There shouldn't be cross-overs, but here's what I would love to see happen:
See through the existing deals with the other studios, get the rights to all those characters back under Disney/Marvel control, then hand the entire Marvel Universe over to Pixar and perform the mother of all "reboots"!
Pixar could design them to be more teen/adult-oriented thematically to stand apart from their in-house concepts, and you'll never have a bad movie made from a Marvel property again.

Even though it can't be done right now, X-men would rock. We could finally get over the top villains like Apocalypse.
