Discuss: Your Worst Marvel Fears
Filed under: Deals, Executive shifts, Disney, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek

Without a doubt, there's a potential for greatness with the news that Disney bought Marvel Entertainment. With Pixar in the mix, this could mean a whole collection of cool animated superhero movies where the boundaries of human law are no object. But what about the other side?
Even the best laid plains or ideas can go horribly wrong. It's not like Hollywood, or Disney for that matter, have a perfect track record of cinematic goodness. Obviously, they picked up Marvel because they like what the company is doing, and want to get in on the action. But admiration doesn't always make for loyal productions. Just think about all the great books that get made into terrible films, or any company that buys another and then strives to make "improvements."
Could this bring us a collection of superhero flicks like X-Men: The Last Stand? A Ratnerized universe of ruined heroes? It's possible, although it's much more likely that we could get films that just don't get it, or don't invoke the universal fan glee that projects like X2 and Iron Man inspire. What would you do if future projects came out like Daredevil? If we got even more mediocre-at-best Fantastic Fourish films? Or, oh God, imagine if the superheroes got the treatment that fairy tales got with Disney -- most of the eerie frights bled out until nothing more than bubblegum goodness remained? Or, even worse, as Scott tweeted today: "Zac Efron cast as Peter Parker. Nope, it hasn't happened, but do brace yourself for news items like this one." The Spider-Man musical on stage might be dead, but...
What do you fear now that Disney has its hands in Marvel?

i fear nothing and hope for the best. it can't get much worse than FF, X3, or Elektra anyway.
I imagine Disney saw a company that was generating a lot of buzz, making some $$, and making a lot of fans happy - and decided it would be good to get in on that - they lend their resources then watch the money come in from their new properties. It's been working out with Pixar.
At worst we'll get mini-mates styled cartoons (or do they already have those?) and a kingdom hearts style video game franchise. Is that so bad? The movies will probably still be sort of hit or miss, but they'll have a bigger bankroll behind 'em.
Shorter answer, I'm not worried about seeing Goofy sitting on the shoulder of Galactus anytime soon.

I'm a huge Kingdom Hearts fan. And the idea of doing a Marvel/Final Fantasy/Disney game sounds really REALLY cool! Imagine Wolverine vs Sephiroth! Or Cloud vs Daredevil (just throwing that out there). What a cool idea!

I fear nothing-like PIXAR it will be left unchanged. Disney is like the Japanese, they dont usually create anything new, just improve upon the existing...

I fear nothing. I hope and wait with baited breath that I may see in my lifetime an Iron Man/Gizmo Duck fight scene. I will pay good money to see that happen.

Is it too late to get RDJ to wear a Scrooge McDuck t-shirt in Iron Man 2?

disney trying to make everything g rated.
i dont see the logic behind this purchase at all.
sony should have done this and they could have held all the superhero video game licenses also and restricted it to ps3.

How could this be any worse than the examples given in the post? From a financial standpoint, they are not paying $4B just to muck it up. They get superheros for their themeparks, they get a 5000 character universe for Pixar who undoubtedly would love to do more adult oriented action animated pics. Disney has done a good job of showcasing Marvel (and DC) animated TV shows on Disney XD (the rebranded Toon Disney). Plus, they are getting another successful movie studio that has a proven track record of making big bucks with movies like Iron Man etc.
So chill out. Sit back and let's see what develops.
I could see this as a great opportunity to see more of the fantastic storylines that don't translate well to live action but suffer from 2D or flat animation. Plenty of undeveloped X-teams to choose from. Or the Young Avengers. Or Alpha Flight. What about a She-Hulk movie? Or... (wait for it).... it might be the only way to see Civil Wars or Marvel Zombies.
I have said for awhile that the Pixar style of animation is prime to grow up and show us some real life looking, action packed superhero movies. And now we have the chance.

I'm pretty sure Pixar is too focused on creating fantastic character based films with original content and imaginative story telling to scour the Marvel universe to make shitty "action-packed" movies. And, Marvel studios made the Wolverine movie, proving that a big budget doesn't mean it won't be shit.
And no one wants to see a fully cg animated super hero movie.

Actually, I would love to see a "fully cg animated super hero movie." So would a lot of my buddies. Just saying.

OK, Disney bought Marvel, can we please get over it? Does there need to be a post on it every 10 seconds? It just happened yesterday and already I'm sick hearing about it.
"What Marvel character should MIckey Mouse play?" "Should they bring back Duck Tales and replace Scrooge with Wolverine?" Stop it. Nothing is going to change.

my worst marvel fears already came through:
none of the movies were good enough with the exception of iron man, The Incredible Hulk (new one) and i guess Punisher was not too awful.
Seriously X-Men 1 sucked, where was the real team, where was the sentinels?
then Spider-man, holy shit wtf why toby mcguire? and where were the catch-phrases? and why was MJ so ugly? Also why was the Web part of his power it never used to be. Then he loses his web power in 2 because of conflicts in his head, gro the fuck up spidey(and they were trying to copy the whole running out of web cans from comics..)
i wish i had input in this shit i swear fans would love it and people would still watch it.

Look, I wrote about this at lenght in my own blog, and I don't want to plug that....BUT my biggest fear is that once all the characters are back under the Disney/Marvel umbrella the will fall in disuse like most DC characters have under WB. Crappy movies I can take(and ignore). But let's just say WB has promised and scrapped more movies than I'd like and they simply DON'T have to do them, so they don't. So ask yourself...does Disney NEED to make Marvel movies?

My question about all this is what happens to Marvel Island at Universal studios in florida, I know disney bought the entertainment division but I know how picky and overly protective of characters they get.
