Fox Officially Rebooting 'Fantastic Four'
Filed under: Action, Deals, Scripts, 20th Century Fox, DIY/Filmmaking, Newsstand, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
This is why it does pay to keep track of whispers and rumors on our great Internet. Back in March, IESB.net reported that Fox was toying with the idea of a Fantastic Four reboot. I thought it was too soon, many of you did too, although the general consensus seemed to be that we'd all like them to return after a bit of a breather. Well, we're getting the reboot, and probably in very short order. Variety reports that Fox has hired producer Akiva Goldsman to oversee the project, and brought on Heroes alumni (and co-writer of Warner Bros' The Green Lantern) Michael Green to pen a screenplay. Fox wouldn't comment on the project further, but Variety notes that the studio owns the Fantastic Four in perpetuity, and that they're still keen on making a Silver Surfer movie. Last we heard, J. Michael Straczynski's script was in the dead zone, but given what all is being resurrected at Fox, perhaps there's still hope for it.
So, it begins again. Prepare for a year or two of Fantastic Four casting and script rumors (feel free to start your own in the comments), and resign yourself to the fact that the Disney-Marvel behemoth will never, ever get the Fantastic Four, Daredevil, or any of the X-Men characters away from 20th Century Fox.

Hell, I'd be happy if Fox just got rid of Rothman. That guy is a supervillain in the flesh.

per*pe*tu*i*ty -- noun
1. endless or indefinitely long duration or existence; eternity.
That means according to the deal Fox made with Marvel, as long as they keep cranking out movies, they'll hold the rights forever. There is probably a clause that states if no movies are made for a certain period of time (5, 10, 15 years) that the rights will revert back to Marvel. But Fox isn't going to allow the rights to falter unless they are totally disinterested in the property. The fact that they are attempting to reboot the Fantastic Four so soon indicates that they aim to keep everything and not let a potential moneymaker slip its way to Disney.

For Reed, please go older. He's supposed to be the elder of the group, with a touch of gravitas to him.
For Sue Richards, here's an idea... try a blonde this time. I don't care who, just someone who doesn't look ridiculous trying to pass herself off as a blonde. Oh, and acting ability would be a plus, although with Goldsman and Green involved that may not be a requirement.
I'd actually be psyched to see them keep Chris Evans as Johnny Storm. He was the one thing the first two films got right.
Mo-cap The Thing. The orange rock suit was a nice try, but no.
Last, go back and re-watch the first two films paying close attention to Dr. Doom. Take extensive notes. Now... everything they did with Dr. Doom in those two movies, don't do that. Maybe read a few comics if you need ideas.

Does anyone want to see another FF movie after what we had to endure in the first two? I don't care if it is a reboot, this is not a good move. Kind of reminds me of how the AVP series keeps slipping down and down and down...
I'd say get Akiva Goldsman a better project to try and save or bring up from scratch...
Lastly, @4...totally agree with Chris Evans!! Talk about a saving grace to a belly flop of a film.

Err, I think it's still way early to be rebooting. You'd have to reboot into action, a la lat years incredible Hulk. Personally, I think a new Villain is in order. Moleman, perhaps.

ugh, i hate hate hate akiva, but love love love the idea of a reboot.
on one hand, i'm dying to see the classic four on the big screen done well, but on the other, the ultimates stories would make a great transition from page to screen. Reed and the rest as teenagers?
Chris Evans and Chiklis were well cast and pretty great in their roles, but damn did those two movies suck.

Will the moviegoing public (not the rabid fans, but the non-book-reading folks) respond well to a quick reboot?
I'd rather see a third flick with the same crew than get a retelling. It's not that I think Tim Story and Co. did a fantastic job, but after resets of Hulk and Punisher proved to be franchise dead-ends, I'm not investing in another round of selective baggage handling.
Sure, comic books play fast and loose with continuity, but they don't reinvent the universe every time out. The bright spandex and heroic clash are fun hooks to get you in the door, but these far-fetched things don't have traction without some familiarity. And a different version of a familiar character is MORE distracting and requires MORE audience effort than a character we've not seen before -- the brain can't help but reach for context to make sense of things, and comic book flicks should not feel like David Lynch films. It takes time to lose the baggage of the last flick -- more than five years. Try ten.
OTOH, we know Fox has to make SOME kind of superhero flick every year or so. Maybe it's better they burn the Four than take another dump in the X-Men pool. Oh, wait, Deadpool. *sigh*
Can there just be some kind of Hollywood referendum that rescinds Fox's Marvel character rights? Or reduces them to a first-look no-input deal?

This needs to happen. Maybe we should start a petition.

I love how everyone shouts advice to the filmmakers, as if they're the blogger. It's like how kids shout advice to characters on-screen.

Do we need to see this story told again? Are fans that desperate to see some mythical perfect cinematic version of Fantastic Four that they'll sit through yet another origin story?

I may be the only one but I would much more prefer to see a Silver Surfer film over Fantastic Four. There is so much great stuff in that character. Even things that remind me of Superman but different.
I just hope that the next FF film is good or the movie series will be dead. Because who would want to touch a movie that both versions suck. So I hope that the story has character development, lose the goofiness, haves an excellent script, talent & make the four the real four and not bad look a likes. Plus Dr.Doom needs to be awesome too.
I just hope that the FF series can be good this time around on film. Because the comics are rich with story and I want that to translate to film too.
