Say Four Hail Marys for the 'Boondock Saints 2' Trailer
Filed under: Action, Sony, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips

I really didn't think The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day would actually make it to completion. Given the legend of Troy Duffy and the decade that's passed since the original, I thought it'd be a lot of "It's filming soon!" announcements via Duffy's blog, and never come to be. But it has, and here's its first trailer, courtesy of IGN.
Now, let me be honest. I don't loathe The Boondock Saints as much as I probably should. It's one of those films that escaped my notice for years until the t-shirts started showing up at Hot Topic, and guys I knew were dressing as the Saints for Halloween. I watched it, I laughed at the rope scene, and then never thought about it again. Until now, and something tells me I'm going to experience a wave of cultish fandom that will really bug me.
Or not. Even from my lukewarm Saints stance, the trailer is really pretty boring. There's a lot of gun loading, a lot of shooting, a lot of leaping, and a really hideous moment involving Julie Benz's FBI Agent and her high heels. It does feel like some kind of portal into 1999 cool, and the fact that Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus haven't aged a day in ten years just makes it an even creepier time warp. But if you love, love, love all things Boondock Saints, something tells me you'll be thrilled by everything promised here. Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Days hits theaters on October 30.

Not a good trailer, but I'm glad there is proof that this movie exists now. I'm still super excited.

Yeah - Flannery has definitely aged - not sure where you're getting that...as for Julie Benz's heels - not really a movie killer for me
Why doesn't someone at Cinematical who actually likes the original write a column about the sequel (there better be at least one)...just sayin

.....because such a person probably doesn't exist. If your job is to review movies, I'm pretty sure liking "Boondock Saints" is grounds for firing.

Picked up the blu-ray a few weeks back. After a decade, the only good parts are what the kid in me still enjoys.
'Overnight' really changed things for me. I thought I could just hate the man and not judge his work, but the trailer fixed that. The brothers EXPLODING out of a wooden crate - did anyone else see that and faceplam?

Now Matthew, if you want to make a comment about Mr. Duffy, have ALL the facts before you do so! "OverNight" was a smear job done by to "EX" friends who thought Mr. Duffy should pay their way for the rest of existence! Don't we call those people "Hangers on, Mutts or Losers"! Let a video camera follow you around, just one day, someone can & will edit you straight into HELL!

Trailer was a little dull, yes, but it did hit just the right notes for fans to be ecstatic. Namely the return of the two boy and their hugely bearded father.
To be honest, it was really weird for me as I just watched the movie again last weekend so with it fresh on my mind it as a more epic trailer the first time. The draw of the movie(s) is/was that they're two relatively average guys taking justice into their own hands without random super powers, and it is also a parody of all other action movies(namely the 'rope' scene) It is kinda like Shoot 'Em Up with plot.

Ya, its definitely Rocco. Duffy said in a videoblog that he was bringing him back for this movie. I assume that he will only appear in flashbacks or dream sequences, for obvious reasons.

The Boondock Saints is a piece of garbage and this looks laughably worst. The fact that there's a cult following for this tripe makes me sad for the state of the modern film audience.

Man.. I've never seen so much hatred for this movie before. Everyone I know loves this movie. I thought it was pretty generally loved, at least by cult classics fans.
I will be there day one!

I liked the idea for a sequel after I saw the original. It was one of those movies people didnt realize existed till a while after it was released. Its taken a long time for them to come up with a sequel, most likely due to them just convincing people to make it and show that there was a ton of fan support.
My opinion of what I saw in the trailer is sketchy to say the least. I hope it does better than the first but there are bits that stood out to me right away that have me guessing. The main one was about Sean Patrick Flanery. Either he isnt aging well or the trailer i saw was horrible quality (from IGN). I thought they actually replaced the actor but it said his name and i looked it up and sure enough its the same brother from the first film. He just doesnt look like what he used to at all. Maybe there is something there Im not seeing like drugs or plastic surgery or maybe he is just aged and his looks went from manish to old manish real quick.
The other part that kinda bugs me is that I know the funny man wont be in it unless they do flashbacks or he has a hidden twin and we prob wont see Willem Dafoe. The other brother seems to be his same cool self. Their father seems to have grown longer hair and looks quite kickass. And their new brother or friend or whatever is he looks like the new crazier comic relief.
All in all I will need to wait to see the film to have a real opinion on it. right now Im being more skeptical than anything.

Like you, I wondered why SPF didn't look like himself.
I found pics (Google images) from a Playboy 2006 issue he did where he was still hot (as usual) and looked like himself (not hyper aged as he does in this trailer).
Also, SPF is a jiu jitsu black belt and is known to take good care of his health.
The only thing I can conclude about the drastic, negative change in how his face looks is that someone gave him bad, unnecessary plastic surgery. The McManus brothers should definitely put a "hit" on whoever defaced SPF.
SPF's appearance change is a major distraction from what could be a decent sequel for BS.

Ok well to add to my last post. I did some image searching on Sean Patrick Flanery to see what was up and ive learned that he is actually not just an actor but also a black belt and an MMA fighter. This explains why he looks quite different. Fighting will do it. The face becomes hardened and through lots of brutality it will start to look different. If you have heard of cauliflower ear then you know what fighting can lead to. I suppose this is his new look. Watched an interview with him and he sounds different too.

ok.. there is movies that have to be written good, and filmed great, and just all around great .. but then there is films that just take care of your action fix, or the kid in you wants to see fun action. this is one of those flix, i liked the first one, was great , not because of the great writing, or great cinematography , just cuz the kid in me loves action, i can always go back to desperado, shoot em up, just to get my gun play fix.. and ong bak 2, great action movie.. did i understand what really happen.. F**K no, but i loved it.. not puting it up for any awards.. so people that just bash a movie because nothing else to do.. cmon , this is one of those fantasy fun flicks that could never possibly happen,. some people forget that there ae some movies that are made just for entertainment. youknow..

My wife LOVES Boondock Saints, and she thought the new trailer was awesome. But I suspect she was reacting more to its existence than anything else.
I don't have a strong opinion of BS -- it doesn't do much for me either way. Willem Dafoe was easily the best thing in it, and with him gone, my only incentive to see the sequel will be my wife's insistence.
