'Toy Story 3' and 'Cars 2' Plots Revealed
Filed under: Animation, Disney, Fandom, Exhibition, Family Films, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips

Even though it's TIFF time and seemingly the entire movie world is descending on my home town of Toronto, remember, the Great White North isn't your only source of movie news. During the London-based Disney Animation Showcase, Pixar's John Lasseter dropped a tiny bombshell and let a few details fly about the upcoming sequels (or 'threequel' in Toy's case) to Toy Story and Cars. To be fair, we only got a taste, but at least we know a little more than what we did before. So on that note, let's go right to the big dog first, shall we?
Toy Story 3
Back in June, Elisabeth brought us the news that Pixar was looking to make a more a little more 'grown-up', but details about the flick were still being kept under lock and key. Today, though, the big news came when Lasseter showed a clip from the film with Andy all grown up and packing for college, while Woody and the gang headed for a storage container. The scene goes on to show Andy changing his mind and holding on to Woody, but unfortunately the rest of the toys aren't so lucky. Lasseter also gave a preview of the upcoming trailer that fleshes out the story a little more, and it looks like the action will center on Woody saving his friends from a local daycare center. Lasseter must have been in the 'sharing mood' because along with the clips and trailers, he confirmed that Timothy Dalton will be adding to the mix as a stuck-up hedgehog by the name of Mr. Pricklepants -- a name I will totally steal if I ever get a pet, but I digress.
After the jump: an update on Cars 2...
Cars 2
During the same London event, Lasseter went on to tell the press that in the sequel to the 2006 film, Lightning McQueen (voiced again by Owen Wilson) has entered a global Race of Champions with other cars from around the world. But, if you aren't a fan of Larry the Cable Guy, get ready for the bad news, because it sounds like the film is going to focus on the 1951 International Harvester in a case of mistaken identity with an Aston Martin by the name of Finn McMissile. According to Lasseter, the flick will be a "spy thriller" of sorts resulting in a showdown at Buckingham Palace. It might not be the most original story, but on the upside we might score a 'Bond' for a voice cameo.
Toy Story 3 (in 3D) will open in theaters on June 18, 2010 and Cars 2 (in 3D) will arrive in theaters on June 24, 2011.

As far as I'm concerned, Pixar can do no wrong, as evidenced by their track record. I do have some reservations about a ' Cars' sequel, as the story seemed pretty self- contained. What about a sequel to The Incredibles, which had an ending that just about SCREAMED sequel? Oh well, its hard to argue with a company whose success rate would put them into any Hall Of Fame, anywhere in the world. If anyone can get a Cars Sequel to fire on all cylinders ( Smirk) they can.

The sequel-ending screamed out by the Incredibles was followed up in the video game, I think. "Rise of the Underminer" or something like that.

Two very odd choices for sequelitis. Cars is the least critically aclaimed movie out of the bunch, and Toy Story was so nicely wrapped up there was no need for a sequel.
Meanwhile the Incredibles - critically acclaimed, one of the better superhero films of all time - gets a videogame sequel. Very odd.

looking forward to both those films but gotta say i'm disappointed that it looks like we won't be seeing anything completely original from pixar for quite a while. hopefully they'll soon get to the point were they can release more than one film a year... that'd be nice.

I'm no fan of Cars, but have you been to a Wal-Mart lately? Cars merchandise has outsold Incredibles, Wall-E, Up and Ratatouille combined.
New cars from around the world? Disney going to milk this cow for all it's worth. Bad news for fans of quality Pixar flicks.

Both of these films are certainly going to be box office hits. Anyone know of any new merchandise coming out/already out in the build up to these films?
Thanks in advance
Daniel
