Disney Announces 'Pirates of the Caribbean 4' Date, Title!
Filed under: Disney, Fandom, Johnny Depp

So yes, Pirates 4 is coming out in Summer 2011. That's probably the biggest news. What else did they announce? Check it out below ...
- Disney's The Princess and The Frog will be screened at the Disney Studio in Burbank, which is being opened to the public for the first time ever, from November 25th through December 13th.
- The new Muppets movie will be called The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made. Interestingly, this is the same title as a concept for a Muppet film that Jim Henson, Jerry Juhl and Frank Oz had back in 1985. It was revived in 2000 by Frank Oz, but died in development hell. We're assuming this is the new Jason Segel Muppet project.
- Disney is remaking The Beatles' Yellow Submarine as a 3D film, complete with new motion capture and the original songs from the soundtrack, directed by Robert Zemeckis.
- Disney's Pirates 4 will be called Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and will be released in Summer 2011. Depp came out as Jack Sparrow, and asked if anyone had seen a talking frog. Well, stranger things have happened.
- We should also point out (thanks to commenter Dan) that On Stranger Tides is the name of a Pirate-related book by Tim Powers. Is Disney adapting the book for the fourth movie? Did they swipe the title? What's the connection there, because there definitely has to be a connection.
- Depp will also be back at Disney at Tonto in The Lone Ranger, which we already knew. But hey folks, more Depp.
- John Carter of Mars will be hitting the screen in 2012.
- Dick Cook said to Nic Cage, "I don't want to embarrass you, but how about doing another National Treasure?" Cage said, "Sure!" But that was it. Is that official confirmation of National Treasure 3? I guess we'll find out.

Did anyone ask if Disney planned to have Pirates 4 suck as much as Pirates 2&3?
Also: dear Robert Zemeckis. Enough with the motion capture. Re-familiarize yourself with a movie camera. Please.

I'm assuming the target audience for Pirates 4 are the same tykes who watch "Finding Nemo" once a day, every day until the DVD melts.

I am sure your kind of movie is something like superbad and step brothers etc that are real waste of film and two hours of whoever watches them lives. As all the other pirate haters because god forbid a story be good that has no naked people and someone isn't talking about genitalia every other sentence. Shame on Disney.

Actually, there was a weird National Treasure 3 moment with Dick Cook and Nic Cage. They didn't really announce it, but he asked if he'd do another one. Updated the list with that, but it wasn't an official announcment.

awesome! the next couple of years are going to rock with disney movies. I can't wait for Pirates 4, John Carter of Mars, the Lone Ranger, and especially National Treasure 3. These kinds of movies are right up my alley because they're adventurous, old fashioned, and a lot of fun with the occasional side of cheesy b picture goodness.

From what I've heard, they're toning Pirates 4 down.. making it a bit simpler. The problem with the last two (I did enjoy them, they weren't *so* bad!) is they didn't make any sense, and they were trying to hard to be 'epic'. So.. I actually have hope that the 4th might be the best... well I guess we'll see.

You could've just said "Jason Segel muppet project" and ended it there for me. That made Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
Blows my mind that anyone cares about Pirates of the or National Treasure anymore. I guess I shouldn't be surprised though... some people intentionally see crap for reasons I'll never understand.

The Tim Powers book involves the Fountain of Youth, which suggests there might be a connection, considering the ending of PotC3. Also, interestingly, the book was part of the inspiration for "The Secret of Monkey Island".

A Pirates 4, free of all the convoluted nonsense and unnecessary returning characters (Bloom and Knightley) that sunk 2 and 3, could work. If this is the route they're taking, then I'm all for it. Maybe I won't be so ashamed to have the first movie in dvd collection if this is the case.
The Muppet movie news brought a huge smile to my face.

There is nothing I would love more than a Monkey Island film. Maybe Grim Fandango.

No Dark Crystal news, but why would there be? Disney only bought the Muppets from Henson, not the entire company. The Henson family still owns Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Fraggle Rock, and a slew of other stuff.
