TIFF: 'Creation' Finds No Distribution, Hopes for Controversy to Help

Long after his death, Charles Darwin continues to stir up fuss over his landmark theories of evolution, and the producers of TIFF Opening Night Film Creation (watch the trailer after the jump) are clearly hoping to milk said fuss for all the Stateside distribution it's worth.
The Telegraph of the UK has producer Jeremy Thomas on the record as saying, "It has got a deal everywhere else in the world but in the US, and it's because of what the film is about." He then cites early rave reviews, including anonymous word-of-mouth calling it "the best film they've seen all year", the Hollywood Reporter's positive reaction and the Telegraph's own 300-word review -- accessible through the sponsored page of content linked within the article.
But many critics have simply found the film to be too much of a bore to merit controversy. The A.V. Club's Noel Murray said, "for the most part Creation is Biopic 101, earnest and over-explained." Eric Kohn at Indiewire called it "a dry period piece missing crucial information," while Anne Thompson went with "flat, dull, and painful to sit through." And Ebert? Well, he's basically said that he'll hold his opinion until the film opens, a date which remains to be determined.
At least his non-review can claim to run twice as long as the Telegraph's unabashed praise.

So is this a true tail about Darwin or is it a Creationist look at Darwin?

From the Ebert article it sounds like it's a biopic about Darwin and his relationship with his wife (and how she influenced him).

Apparently is about his crisis of faith while on the journey on the Beagle.

Supposedly it's the true tale, but Darwin wasn't against creationism or God. That's the messed up think about the whole argument between evolutionists and creationists. Creationists are blinded by the fact that he was excommunicated, evolutionist are blinded by the fact he didn't go to church. He still believed in God and theorized evolution was his tool for the good that came about in gene selection that allowed a species to thrive. From what I've read of the synopsis of the movie from the movie's page itself, they're saying he had a problem with god. So it's really not so factual a presentation.

Did Darwin have a TAIL? Did he evolve from monkeys? If , going by your spelling, he did indeed! Other than that, it's a TALE, as in story of fiction........see if you can figure it out!

Darwin spent the last 20 years of his life publicly denying evolution to the sole source for life and that all life was created. read any objective biography on him and it will tell you the same thing.

Darwin would have trashed his theory if he had known about DNA. Check out a video with Ben Stein called "Expelled"

by that admonition the bible is a TALE as well. The problem with this debate is that no one has any REAL FACTS. When you take the word of someone else you no longer have an opinion of your own. Using the word of others you perpetuate the falsity of reality. YOU create hatred, mistrust, and skepticism through the language of your race/denomination/belief. We as humans must look past what divides us and only look at what helps us evolve physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Ceasing to see everything as a WHOLE only separates us from the true meaning of life and separates us from each other. The more you hate the more YOU separate. The narrow mindedness on both sides will be their own undoing.

So, I take it that a "creationist's" view would not be a "true" view?

you must understand, the u.s. has been brought under the spell of contemporary religion. it is the property of right wing extremists as long as it remains under this spell. but religion is evil, it has been turned to benefit the devil, and that is the very reason this film has been banned in the states. you do not have to be religious to be spiritual, this is what they do not want you to know. they do not want you to know that darwin could've even been a little bit right, they want to ban this knowledge from you altogether. cannot you idiots see? Wake up now, times are a' changin'. This is a wake-up call. If you still sleep, it is not my fault!

Okay so you take a pug and a beagle and you have them mate. You're not gonna have a litter of pugs and beagles, they are going to be a mix of the two species. Some genes will be dominant, which is why some children are born with disabilities and some mixed breed dogs don't all look the same!!! It is simple!! Why do those who believe in creationism believe that this can happen but completely deny that evolution is pure fact. Yes I do believe in God AND evolution. If creation was true everyone in the world would look the same, because there would be no unique genes in the world. And yes ladies and gentlemen there is proof that things in the Bible really did happen, BUT there is no proof of creation. Thank you for your time.

I hope you didn't take my comment as anti-evolution. It was just a jab at Paul Bellamy.

lindsey0907 is absolutely right ... Darwin didn't believe in evolution as the teaching has "evolved" today. He did recognize it as a process but NOT as a process that contradicts creation. I believe that evolution is a tool used by God in the process of creation. Today's intolerant, hate-mongering liberal crowd are so anti-God that they don't want to hear anything about creation, as it may lead to the dispicable act of worshiping some being that is greater than themselves.
