'Night of the Living Dead: Origins' Does Not Sound Like a Good Idea
Filed under: Horror, Deals, Scripts
I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but Hollywood tends to break things. If a formula worked once, it will invariably be remade, repackaged, and resold over and over again until the equation is no longer profitable. But occasionally the Hollywood hive mindset is not content with merely breaking something. Every now and then it has to rape and pillage, and thus we shall soon have Night of the Living Dead: Origins. Wallow in these few key bits from The Hollywood Reporter's news on the matter:"Zombie movie "Night of the Living Dead" is coming back, this time in a 3D CGI format and without the involvement of George Romero." ... "On the story front, De Soto, who wrote the script with David R. Schwartz, wants to update the tale partially by bringing out the characters' backstories and make what he called "an American-style anime."" ... "The aim of the process is to make tennis balls on a stick representing real people or monsters a thing of the past by allowing actors interact with CG elements as if they are tangible." ... "De Soto was a fan of the original "Living Dead" and once the trio realized the rights were in the public domain, zeroed in on that project."

peter hall, tisk tisk tisk, how little you actually know about remakes. All the remakes that have come out in the last decade have been amazing! They do the job of entertaining... and creating a great escape. Zombie fans actually like to escape reality and go to a zombie movie, shocking i know. This new company New Golden Digital hasn't done anything that I could find online but I did find an old video this De Soto guy did for Screamfest 06 and it looks good. Did you do any research into who you were talking shit about before you wrote this article? Right, didn't think so, boy the validity of your opinion just keeps growing doesn't it. By my count This movie will rock! Reality check cup cake, you spew the same recycled pop culture movie chat found on every other remake hater blog. You're nothing special, you didn't make it in hollywood and now you're attacking others who are. I would venture to say that new technology in this guys pocked allows him to do the 3D CGI and the audiences will eat it up for a fresh new take on a classic. I don't like Zombie movies all that much but the prospect of one in anime style excites me to the core. I've talked to a few of my horror movie loving buddies and they can't wait for this thing to come out either. Peter Hall, you've just been served!

Served by bad grammar and repeated typos, yes. Iron clad logic? No.
Glad to hear I didn't make it in something I never tried, though.

Served by bad grammar? That's the best response? Attack his grammar and not the content of the response? You did in fact get served, Peter. I hate to say it . . . E.A. is right. I dig some digging as well and found out that he's right. Look at the history of these remakes and you'll discover his logic is correct. Let's leave the ego out of your responses. Journalism is about reporting truth as it happens . . . not reporting your opinion of something you haven't witnessed yet. Watch the movie and then decide.

I found the twitter to David R. Schwartz. He calls himself D.R. I'm thinking we harass him for writing the thing.

I agree that 80 to 90 percent of all films, regardless of their originality, are not worth paying for at the dollar show. But that does not mean that there are not great films hidden in between. I think everyone can consider The Thing, one of the most influential horror films of all time, regardless if they like the movie. That was a remake. Some other critically acclaimed films that are remakes would include, Cape Fear, The Departed, Oceans Eleven, and Scarface. Granted not all of these are from the past decade, but none the less they are remakes that are great films. There are plenty of films that I enjoy that are remakes, but are not considered great. For example since we are talking zombies, Dawn of the Dead. I enjoyed that movie from begining to end. I know that they are not the tradition modern Romero zombies, but that movie had scene's that still creep me out. I think an anime style remake could give the story a unique look and feel. I've been a fan of zombie's and films for as long as I can remember, and I'll give anything that includes both at least a shot.
