Prepare Yourselves: Stephenie Meyer's Other Series to Hit the Big Screen
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Deals, Scripts
Did you even know that Stephenie Meyer has another series that does not deal with sparkly vampires? It's called The Host, and sadly no, it's not about large, killer tadpoles that have to be brought down by a weird and dysfunctional family. Instead, it's about an alien race whose souls have taken over the planet, inserting themselves into their human hosts by erasing their minds and taking over. But there's a girl named Melanie Stryder who is not so willing to let the aliens take over her mind, and this Wanderer starts feeling what Melanie does, and wants "to locate the last pocket of surviving humans on Earth." Oh yeah -- and it's an adult novel.Variety reports that producers Nick Wechsler, plus Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz, ponied up their own money to grab the screen rights to Meyer's novel, and have tapped Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, The Truman Show) to write the script and direct the feature. Turns out, Meyer had been refusing bids for The Host, but was charmed by "a significant offer, a strong vision for the project, and a collaborative spirit." It helped that Niccol was involved. It seems two of her top 5 sci-fi films are Truman and Gattaca.
Get prepared, Con geeks. If this does even half as well as Twilight, you can bet your bottom dollar that her presence at ComicCons will continue to grow. I mean, she's got vampires and aliens -- she's just one technopunk or wizard away from full-on geek love.
Think The Host will have the same impact as Bella and her supernatural creatures of the night?

It's not a series. Theres just the one book.
I've read it, and although it's not as wellwritten as twilight (not that twilight was wellwritten) it has a desent story and if handled correctly this movie might actually be good. Then again it might be handled like twilight, and if that's the case I'm not even bothering watching this one.

I've read that Meyer has written more, so although one is out, a series is forthcoming.

So, it's about Scientology?

Haha @Bill. No. It's not a terrible book-- certainly not as bad as the last two in the Twilight series. But I doubt it will have the same appeal because it's a little messier and darker than Twilight. I mean, who has even heard of this book, right?

i read this book and liked it. (actually, my wife brought it home from the library and found it too scary for her) i'd say the writing is on par with the twilight series.
i thought this was a stand alone novel but i haven't been following the author, is it confirmed this will be a series?
i'd be very interested to hear what their "strong vision for the project" is, as imho this is a very difficult plot to adapt to the screen. while overcoming the first person interior monologue is a tough task for all book to movie adaptations, the most compelling twist to this story is the interior struggle between the main character's personality and her uninvited "host". i can't picture how this will be handled effectively.
also, the compelling interior monologue does a good job of covering a huge plot weakness. given the dispositions of the aliens, they could never keep the wheels of human civilization turning. the book spends so much time inside the main character's exciting head, that this giant hole in the plot is glossed over.
in fact, my main criticism of Meyer's stories is that they each contain a major plot error. i'm sorry, as compelling as her "vampires are like marble statues" plot device is at times, in "reality" it would make it 100% impossible for the vampires to integrate into human daily life! i never understood how something with the mass of a human being would never even equalize to room temperature? sorry to go off track, but even in a snow storm, edward isn't warmer than the ambient temperature?
similar to the twilight series, "the host" does contain a forbidden romance - and the emotional drama this sparks. i can see how his could be emphasized in order to market the movie in a similar way to the twilight products.

Anything! Even look like becoming a remake movie or heading to the Big screen! I like to add my Gold Mind! Awesome potential! Great opportunity for a Redd Foxx Tribute in Sanford and Son “THE MOVIE”

Finally! I'm so excited about this. "The Host" is such a fun and interesting novel, I'm glad it's going to get a shot at the big screen and hopefully, win over some of the Twilight fans who haven't made the leap to The Host yet.
Now I just hope they get a good cast together.

Am I the only one who thinks that "Melanie Stryder" is suspiciously similar to "Stephenie Meyer"?
Meyer has named her respective heroines "Melanie Stryder" and "Bella Swan." The latter is a Mary Sue (author wish-fulfillment) name if I ever heard one - fittingly, as Bella is a Mary Sue character - and the former *is a play on her own name.* The more I learn about Meyer, the more convinced I become that she doesn't *write* so much as jot down her private fantasies. I think I'll skip "The Host."

I don't think Truman is really Scifi.
It sounds half interesting, half 28 days-ey, I am legendy.

I actually liked The Host (can't believe the same author wrote the two worlds), it was more adult and serious and less emo whiny love interest obsession. People dealt with practical things. I look forward to the movie.

Ms Meyer, I love your books, and I so want you to write another book in the Twilight series. The answer is probably "NO", but I so want for Jacob and Reneesme to fulfill their destiny,as well as taking down the Volturie. They will come back, and Jacob deserves to be happy,he is a real good guy. The old saying good guys never win,it's the bad boy syndrome. Since you have a brother named Jacob I would think you would be all about making this to come to pass and Bella and Edward would make great grand parents. Along with the great great grand parents, that would be awesome. But taking the Voluturie down to replace them with the vegeterian diet people that would make it possible for them to co-exhist with normal humans, except for the occasional "rebel".. I heard you were going to write another book on Edward's perspective but some people do not have any thing better to do but be nosy, obnoxious, and ruining it for the rest of the world. Who ever that was I hope he/she was fired. Maybe you will get this and at least think it over. Thanks again for a wonderful love story that all can relate to in some way. Keep up the good work! Respectfully Yours, Vickie Kneisler
