Review: Paranormal Activity
Filed under: New Releases, Theatrical Reviews, Fandom

By Eugene Novikov, reprinted from the Telluride Film Festival, 9/11/09
Once the novelty of the first-person, subjective-camera horror flicks (Blair Witch, Cloverfield, Quarantine, Diary of the Dead, etc,) wore off for me, I started having logistical issues with the genre. After a while, you can't help but start paying attention to the inherent implausibility of the characters as persistent, skilled camerapeople who keep rolling when any reasonable person would have ditched the damn camcorder long ago. That may seem insanely picky, but it's what happens when the same flawed device is foisted on me time and again.
I had some of the same objections to Paranormal Activity, which screened at Telluride in advance of a planned release by Paramount, and nearly two years after it first premiered at Screamfest in Los Angeles. But the movie is so skillful in every other way -- and so much fun -- that I essentially told myself to shut the hell up. Oren Peli's feature debut, the story of a woman haunted by a relentless and malevolent demon, is a terrific companion piece to this year's Drag Me to Hell, with Sam Raimi's old-fashioned horror chops replaced by the masterful execution of a conceptual gimmick.
The idea here is that Micah (Micah Sloat) has purchased a fancy camera to better document what his girlfriend Katie (Katie Featherston, fantastic) claims are paranormal goings-on: weird noises in the night, waking up to things out of place, stuff like that. So Micah figures that if he leaves the camera running in their bedroom through the night -- hooked up to a laptop to avoid a tape running out -- he should be able to catch whatever it is that's happening, and maybe appease Katie in the process. The camera often rolls during the day too, as Micah and Katie, with the help (or more accurately non-help) of a hilariously terrified psychic, struggle with the effects of the increasingly intense haunting. But the film's set pieces are the largely silent nighttime sequences, as the stationary camera captures some clever, subtle, scary things.
I compare Paranormal Activity to Drag Me to Hell not just because they tackle similar subject matter, but because both are so gleefully entertaining. These are good-natured horror flicks; movies to love. They will get under your skin, and they're dark enough for anyone, but they have no interest in intimidating you or pushing the envelope. Paranormal Activity will please horror fans and is an even better date movie; it's funny, too.

One of three things is true of the people who say they liked Paronormal Activity: 1. they got themselves so revved up that they scared themselves, 2. people really can become convinced they see the emperor's clothes or 3. they're so embarassed to have been chumped into seeing it that they lie about it being good.
The truth is it wasn't even a real movie. I'm convinsed that people who say otherwise have to be lying. This thing (I won't call it a movie) is so bad that we should file a class action suit against the people who took our money!

You couldn't possible have seen the same movie I did. This movie totally sucks. A complete waste of time. The actors are mediocre at best. Neither one of them ever seems actually scared and nothing scary happens unless you are terrified of a light going on and off, or of hearing footsteps. BORING!! The characters and plot are thin...while the girl is telling you how this demon followed her from her childhood you'd think she was telling you how to make meatloaf. The only scary thing here was the amount of money I spent for tickets, popcorn and a soda, to see such a piece o crap.

What if, I repeat, what if this were a real event? What if It happened to you. Then would you call it crap? Have you ever played with a Quija board?

Marathonwoman, what I'm calling crap is a bad movie, mediocre actors and one dimensional characters. This was supposed to be a HORROR film. There was much potential that never came to pass. If you want to see what I mean, watch The Entity....same type of situation but THAT was scary.

I really enjoyed this movie and so did my bf. Yes there were scary parts, and the thought of this happening in real life is horrifying. but it was also really good because they pack it with a lot of humor between the couple. Due to the fact the majority of horror movies blow nowadays, i would rank this one as one of the more scary/entertaining ones i have seen EVER. definately not a waste of 9 bucks and no, i didnt sleep well after seeing this. I think its truly a matter of wether you believe in this sort of thing or not. If you do, you def. will appreciate the movie and get your moneys worth.

yups... I agree with linds... I saw the movie and some of my hair skin just stood up... I really find it hard to sleep after watching the movie at about midnight.. hehehe... but the most scary thing I saw in the movie was the ouija part being captured by the video, then the nearly last part of the movie, there very horrifying.

OK. I admit it. I read the reviews, bought the hype and went to a local theatre to see this movie thinking it was going to be a frightening experience. I was suckered in, taken advantage of and left very disappointed. It wasn’t frightening nor was it worth the price of admission. This was five minutes of plot squeezed into 90 minutes of blurry, motion sickening, amateur camera work that was supposed to add to the realism, but merely gave me, and I surmise probably gave many of those in the audience, a headache. I would state here that all of the action takes place in a townhouse, but since there is so little action that would be an overstatement. With a cast of four, and two of whom barely make an appearance, this film wasn’t nearly as scary as it was hypnotic – making the viewer drowsy and wanting to look at his watch to see how soon it was going to be over. Now I understand why the people who wrote all of the reviews about not being able to sleep after this was over were talking about – I assume most of them fell asleep while this horror of a movie was on and were cursing themselves all night for spending 20.00 to see it.

I think, In my opinion, what made this movie scary for me is because I have witnessed some of this stuff in real life and know that this does really happen. And no, none of the really dramatic stuff, but seen things like unexplained shadows, heard footsteps, etc...
I think the best part was listening to people scream (and actually leave because they were scared) and jump. I've never seen people scurry from a theater so fast before!

Went and saw movie today I also bought into the hype wanted to have nightmares but the only nightmares I'll have is spending money on this crap. I wasted 99 min of my life I can't get back, when I could have been home watching the grass grow. Seeing my grandma naked would have been horrifying. Anyone saying they thought it was scary needs to take off there glasses and clen them then watch it again and see what we saw. Don't waste your money donate it to a charity instead.

Saw it again this weekend for the second time. Awesome movie. I love the real-life acting by Micah and Katie. On the second viewing, I notice/heard a couple more things I missed, which was great.
Hope for the DVD to have all of the endings.
