'Friends' Gunther Swears Movie is On the Way
Filed under: Comedy, RumorMonger
Remember that brief whirlwind last year about Friends? Sex and the City made a killing at the box office, and suddenly the rumor mill went wild claiming that the famous sitcom was next ... until those rumors were very quickly quashed. But now they're kinda back again. And it's not due to box office reports, but a small blip from one of the gang -- James Michael Tyler. "Who's he?" you ask? Forget Cox, Aniston, Schwimmer, Perry, Kudrow, and Leblanc. Why would they know what they're talking about? Gunther's the key. Yes, Tyler is Gunther, the coffee shop guy who held fort in the background. According to the paragon of journalism News of the World, Tyler says: "Friends: The Movie is definitely on. I still keep in touch with a lot of the cast and they say that they are really keen. I am definitely on board to do the film. I really loved my time on the show and I am looking forward to meeting up with the old gang again. I just hope we can do justice to the show in a film."
The story goes on to say that the show's creators are gearing up to write a script, and yet again, this is all due to Sex and the City. Talk about determination to stick with the story, or general laziness to come up with a new reason this year. I can't decide which is more likely: They actually asked Tyler because they needed a real quote from someone and the main core wasn't biting, or maybe they figure he's someone who wouldn't as easily refute it. Or, maybe the whole thing is real, and the gang will become Friends again.
I've got to give them credit -- the best way to make a rumor seem true is to tap into the fear that it could be true.

Aren't they all pushing or well into their 40's now? Wouldn't such a movie be kind of lame? Wouldn't the character of Gunther, still working in the coffee shop, be kind of sad? Sort of like the guy who plays him?

You are a sad little person. Millions of people would go see the Friends movie. Just because the charactors are in their fourties, doesnt make them sad, nor would the fans who are now in their fourties be. Can you say Sex in the City, idiot? Those charactors are in their fourties too, and it was a huge hit. You write such a lame opinion based on the idea that people in their fourties are sad and not worthy of watching. Well honey, its obvious what movies were made to suit your intellegence and maturity level. Hello Transformers? Go back to watching cartoons and leave this movie for the grownups. Oh and go clean up your room before you leave for your party at Chucky Cheese.

Ha, isn't that the same reason the Sex and the City movies are so difficult to watch?

Diane. 1) Learn to spell. It's "forties" not "fourties"... which looks like someone typed the words "four" and "ties" without an intervening space. 2) Use a better argument to present your views than "Go home and watch cartoons." Some "cartoons", or animation, as it is more properly known, are considered art. The film Persepolis, for instance, which won an Academy Award. 3) Don't try to pick a fight with me, when you are, as one Walter Sobchak would say, "Out of your element." 4) Have a pleasant day!

"forty |ˈfôrtē|
cardinal number ( pl. -ties)
the number equivalent to the product of four and ten; ten less than fifty; 40 : Troy was only forty miles away | forty were arrested | there were about thirty or forty of them. (Roman numeral: xl or XL.)
• ( forties) the numbers from forty to forty-nine, esp. the years of a century or of a person's life : Terry was in his early forties.
• forty years old : a tall woman of about forty.
• forty miles an hour : they were doing about forty."
I don't think even the British spell it as "fourty".

I guess they'll actually shoot in New York if they do this? It'll be kind of a weird juxtaposition to the soundstagey/stock exterior shot formula of the sitcom.

Oh, come on. Just because he alluded to some of the actors being "keen" on it, that doesn't mean he's confirming it or "swears" it. That's dishonest to him and your readers.

My bad. Yeah, I missed that short line. But still, I don't see it happening unless everyone's on board, and that's gonna be hard, what with Courtney's Cox's sure-to-be-a-raging-success Couger Town just ramping up lol

I kinda hope it's true. I've worked with Tyler, and I'm pals with Mitchell Whitfield who played Barry the Dentist. It'd be kinda fun to re-visit the Friend's universe again...

Another movie based on another TV show that I almost never watched. I sure fans of the show will love it, but for me it'll be just another movie I won't be going to see.

I don't know if a movie is a good idea anymore. The show hasn't held up as well as other big 90s hits (specifically, Seinfeld) and I think that its popularity is waning.

Seriously?! My 17 yr old and 15 yr old have purchased almost all of the season DVD's and they love watching them. My oldest daughter started watching the reruns on tv while waiting for dinner and loved the show so much she wanted the DVD's for christmas and birthday gifts! Then her sister started watching them and loves them too!
You can find a rerun on tv daily several times per day. Why would they make that offer if no one would watch the show?

Maybe they should do a reunion show on Curb Your Enthusiasm.
