Rumor Mill: Robert Pattinson Not Set To Ride 'Dune's' Space Worms After All
Filed under: Romance, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Casting, RumorMonger, Newsstand

After months of speculation that Twilight star Robert Pattinson might star in director Peter Berg's upcoming adaptation of Frank Herbert's "Dune," newbie gossip slangers Gossip Cop broke the scoop that Pattinson would be out of either the Dune role or his gig in Bel Ami, the sordid tale of a playboy adapted from Guy de Maupaussant's novel. Naturally, Twi-hards rejoiced at the news that RPattz will keep the role in which he romances ladies left and right, rather than the one in which he puts his hand in a pain box and rides giant space sandworms. Will Dune fans agree?
Truth be told, Pattinson was never confirmed for the Dune cast but heavy speculation had him pegged to play the part of young Paul Atreides, the heir to a noble family in writer Herbert's space opera. The character was previously played by Kyle MacLachlan in David Lynch's 1984 film adaptation and by Alec Newman in the Sci-Fi Channel's television miniseries Dune and Children of Dune. Berg's version, according to Variety, is intended to be a tent pole-level event film and has potential to kick start an entirely new franchise.
Personally, I'd prefer to see Pattinson in Bel Ami, if in fact this was a "choice" that came down to scheduling issues. My reasons are simple: A) The character drama will take less time to film than an epic, gigantic space blockbuster, and Pattinson just has to be available to film the as-yet unconfirmed fourth Twilight novel, Breaking Dawn (which itself might be split into two parts), and B) I'd rather see Pattinson love 'em and leave 'em in France than struggle with material that could be even cheesier than vampire grimaces and sparkling.
On a side note, let's consider the source. Gossip Cop is a celebrity gossip website launched last summer with the intent of "patrolling celebrity" and "busting bad dish." Essentially, they aim to deliver truthful gossip. The "Truth Meter" on the RPattz story goes all the way to "Real," so we can believe it even more, right? Weigh in on Gossip Cop below, and tell us if you're happy or disappointed that Rob Pattinson won't be adding "space aristocrat" to his resume any time soon.

Hadn't heard he was being considered, but sort of glad he's out. Nothing against him, I can visually see him in the role, but I wouldn't want his whole Twilight life to have an impact on Dune's production.
Of course, I'm so pumped that they're doing it at all, and so convinced (though I'm likely wrong) that it's going to be great that I also think they could launch an unknown in this role and just surround him with big names in the multitude of supporting roles.
But can we get some predictions/hopes? I wanna see who other people want to play Paul Atreides.
I do truly think I'd want an unknown but if Joseph Gordon-Levitt ended up here, I don't think I'd cry about it. Or oh! If they skewed it a little older with the casting choice, maybe Victor-guy from Dollhouse? Bad idea?
Casting choices that should have you checking the Greater Boston area obits for "Dan L" - Shia or, I dunno....Jared Leto.

Also happy to see that Robert Pattinson isn't getting the part for Paul Atreides. He doesn't seem right for the part - Paul is a strong-willed character, not a moody muttering teenager always re-arranging his hair. Joseph-Gordon Levitt is a great suggestion, but I really don't see the Victor-guy for the role - maybe it's because of his character in Dollhouse but he comes accross as a rather blank actor.
And just a small remark : Bel-Ami is actually a novel (and a great one), not a short story.R. Pattinson could be good in this part if he could articulate words properly (I'm sorry I'm really annoyed by the muttering) and act like a strong macho male. Bel-Ami is a rather unsympathetic character, very charming but who sees women only as tools to use for his own pleasure or to help his social ascension. The story is actually very similar to Barry Lindon, only set in the industrial age in Paris. It could be really interesting to see the adaptation, set either in the 19th century or in the present day. Declan Donnellan is said to be the director, but who is that guy ??

neither. can't see him playing space cowboy in dune or heartless sex fiend in bel ami. both roles are a poor fit for him. i'll bet money on his being replaced for ba before the month is out. he's filming unbound captives with hugh jackman beginning in january now. no way ba financiers are going to wait for him indef and the script sucks anyway. he should look for something better than both these films.

As for Dune, I hope Peter Berg will do a descent version to it at last, the other two times were poorly done in the sense that the core of the story was lost in the translation of the grand scenery this story represent.
I want to see Robert doing Bel Ami, the character is very interesting, it is against the romantic lead type, and I read the script and thought the adaptation was very good.
With the Twilight saga he has his good fair of blockbusters, so he can concentrate on other "smaller" projects to do the acting; Bel Ami is a good chance and so is Unbound Captives, with the relative small part but quite challenging.

So glad Rob isn't involved in "Dune". I think it would be a bad career move, the others were really bad. I read the "Bel Ami" script and he's better off. Thank God!

I believe he will do a good job in any role he does. He is playing the role of Edward and he is not Edward in real life. He has done a good acting job by being a convincing Edward. I thought he did a great job in How to Be and Little Ashes. He was very convincing. Sometimes you people forget that you being too harsh about who does what roles. Get a hold reality and yourself. I look forward to seeing him many things and becoming better with each one.

I agree that Pattinson makes a good Edward, but I felt that his take on Dali's eccentricities in Little Ashes was a bit forced. I'm not saying he's a bad actor, but I think he needs some time to grow into parts that require bigger leaps of range. Personally, I'd worry that the Dune role might be a bit too inherently cheesy for him to pull off, although who knows, the filmmakers may tone it down anyway; no Dune fan wants to see a cheesy adaptation. Bel Ami is safer, in terms of the material and (ostensibly) his schedule.

I wish Rob would get away from the angsty roles for a while.....he needs to be in a movie where he gets to smile and laugh! A comedy would be great, because he's naturally funny.

I wish Rob would get away from the serious/angsty roles for a while. I'm SOOOOOO tired of seeing nothing but "brooding, can't- stop-touching-my-hair" photos everywhere. You almost never see pics of him smiling anymore. I think that is directly related to the movie roles he's had lately, but even more related to the crazy, supremely obsessive and instrusive acts of his "fans" and the papparazzi.
He needs to be cast in a comedy where he can smile and laugh!

Firstly Dune wont be filmed for a long while. If anyoen on here was really up to speed they'd know Berg has two films slated before he gets round to Dune. he said that he was looking for teenagers to play the lead role so Rob at 23 could never have played the role. Pattinson did see Berg but its likely it was for something like Battleships or even Hancock 2.
Secondly Berg has far too much productions in various degrees of development. He should be less greedly and focus on making a few films well. I think Dune may prove to be a dud.
Bel Ami is a fantastic book and a great role for Pattinson. Declan Donnellan is one of the UK's greatest directors so Pattinson is very lucky to be working with him. He is a great coach of young actors so Pattinson will learn a lot.
I'd liek to see Pattinson play Young Blood in Bret Ratner's new comic book film. Ratner expressed an interest in the actor so fingers crossed it happens. Its a good fit.

Dune is a very cheesy book and Bel Ami a masterpiece. No contest as far as I'm concerned. In any event Dune is years off and as the earlier poster said Berg is looking for a teenage lead as he wants a franchise. Personally I think he's overegging the interest in the mind numbingly boring Dune.
Young Blood would indeed be a good film for Pattinson to get a male fanbase. He;s a down to earth real guy not some pampered Hollywood poodle. Guy's would like him if they knew what he was like. Rob's team really need to do a better job on PR.
I'm looking forward to seeing Pattinson as a young white indian comanche warrior in Unbound Captives. The script is good and his role a real scene stealer.

You got your facts mixed up. There was no conflict at all between Bel Ami and Dune, there was potential conflict between Bel Ami and Unbound Captives.
Bel Ami is a great book, and a fun character to play. (a manipulative jerk who's also a manwhore? Yippee!)
I think he would probably have made a good Paul. To be honest I'm more concerned about Peter Berg as a director...

Just to clarify my statement - the GossipCop article was written in answer to two different rumours
a) that the schedule for Unbound Captives would cause R.P. to withdraw from Bel Ami
b) the he might be under consideration for Dune
The two had nothing to do with each other.

I agree there's so much wrong with the rumour.
a) Berg IS looking for teenagers for Dune as he said in earlier interviews if anyone cared to read them.
b) Its more likely that Pattinson was talking to Berg about other projects (hopefully Battleships or next Hancock film ).
c) Dune has had its day and shouldnt be touched with a bargepole.
d) Yes Berg is focusing on too many projects and wont be able to do justice to any of them.
e) Bel Ami is a fantastic story and the theatre director Donnellan is an inspired choice. However the script was only okish. I hope that was just an early draft. It was good but not great.
f) Pattinson is perfect for Georges Duroy.
g) However I;d rather he focused on a big film to get a male fanbase.Unbound Captives is a step in the right direction but a graphic novel role would be good.

I know that he needs to capitalize on the fact that he's huge right now, but I would really like to see him do a bit more on the indie side of things, or take a break altogether. Although I didn't see it I hear he was very good in Little Ashes.
As for Dune, I enjoyed the recent remake on the visual side of things, but as I have never read the books I don't feel I can intelligently comment on how well they translated it to the screen.
