Paramount's 'Paranormal Activity' Pays Off
Filed under: Horror, Independent, Paramount, Box Office, Fandom, Exhibition, Newsstand
Paramount has been doing a really interesting campaign for the totally terrifying Paranormal Activity, which has been relying on packed midnight screenings from Thursday through Saturday, word of mouth, and a special Twitter feed, TweetYourScream, that reTweets viewers reactions, to spread the buzz. This gambit has paid off in a big way for the 2007 movie that was made for an estimated $11,000 according to IMDb Pro. [FYI: IMDb is not always the most reliable source of info, as Wikipedia reports that its budget was $15,000. Suffice it to say, it's super low-budget.]Based on demand and earnings -- according to Paramount, its total gross has been $535,000 so far and its midnight screenings, which were only held from Thursday through Saturday nights, were sold out in the 33 cities where it was playing -- Paramount is going to expand Paranormal Activity's release to 40 markets, and not just at midnight, beginning Friday, October 9th.
Viewers can request the movie in their area on Eventful.
Have you seen Paranormal Activity? If so, how did you hear about it? Are you following or participating in its Twitter feed? I'm curious to see if other big-name studios will follow suit since this experiment has obviously paid off, for both horror fans who are ready to face their fears of things that go bump in the night (brrr!) and for Paramount.

I saw it last weekend and it was great! I had seen the trailer, and knew it was in my city, so I went and saw it and thankfully made it into the sold out showing. The audience was really into it, which made it one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. I may see it again with other friends.
I think the experiment is working because it is such a good movie.

I am NOT a fan of scary movies, but this was one of the best movies I have ever seen. It was a packed house and the audience was really into it which just made the experience even better. The actors were great and the story line was believable. It was scary and chilling and my friends and I talked about it for hours afterwards. I definately recommend it!

Wikipedia isn't the most reliable source, either. I could edit the page to say $12,325 if I wanted to.

I only heard about it when I was scanning imdb's upcoming films list. It looked interested, and the trailer hooked me. Had to travel about two hours to get to a city that was playing it, but it was definitely worth the trip. It was easily the scariest movie I've ever seen. Couldn't fall asleep that night until the sun came back up, I was so spooked. That's damn good horror right there, and I'm happy to hear it's going to find an even bigger audience soon. It deserves it.

I heard of this movie first through coworkers of my husband. Since I am a huge horror movie fan I did a little research. My love for a good ghost story peeked my interest the most as it's difficult to find scary ghost stories these days. I couldn't find any upcoming viewings in my area at the time. After a few weeks I randomly saw an add for the movie on a tabloid site and decided to check again and saw that there were 2 shows that weekend. One was already sold out but I was lucky enough to get tickets to the Saturday night showing. It was definitely worth it. My husband was terrified and said it was the scariest movie he had ever seen and that he never wanted to watch another scary movie ever again. I don't know if I can say it's the scariest I've ever seen but it is for sure the scariest movie I've seen in a very long time. I did see the tweetYourScream online and even went to the website but since that was before I had seen it I decided not to read anything so I wouldn't be spoiled on anything that happened. I predict this movie will be incredibly successful.

I saw it this weekend and I'm honestly still a bit shook up. It was a great, and frightening experience. I like scary movies and in the last 5 years there have only been 3 that have really shook me up and stuck with me for several days, The remake of Amityville Horror (I don't know why), The Strangers (because it's just normal people killing for no reason), and this.
I think this one stuck with me because I believe in the paranormal, and because it just seems so real. It's easily one of the scariest movies I've ever seen and it will get under your skin.
Having said that, I highly recommend the movie, just don't see it alone, and don't expect to sleep great for a couple of nights.

I heard about it from, gee, Cinematical, and have been looking forward to seeing it ever since. It's not anywhere in my area, though.

Ever since the first review of Paranormal Activity went up on Cinematical I've been excited to see this- it sounds really creepy, and like a film that makes a low budget work really well. Probably won't get to it until it hits DVD, but definitely on my watch list!

We had it at the movie theater I work at, and we did amazing business with it, and the audience reaction was great. The last twenty minutes are what is freaking the audience out the most.
We sold out our weekend shows (including an added Sunday show) on Thursday afternoon. And we added shows this week on Monday thru Wednesday which are selling swiftly too.
All in all, it's a great event movie type thing. Great promotion, and great reviews.

My wife and I saw it over the weekend in Madison and loved every minute of it. The theater was completely sold out, and other than some light theater chatter at the beginning of the flick, the audience went dead silent once the movie kicked in. I've never seen an audience (or myself, for that matter) react that way at a movie. When the movie was over and everyone was practically running out the theater, it was like we had all seen a 70 minute version of that cursed tape from THE RING and all had the same feeling of dread. It was amazing, and totally worth the two hour drive to get to a theater that was playing it.

I saw a private screening at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, in a very intimate, small theatre with only about 30 people. I don't know if it was the atmosphere or the movie, but I've never heard an audience react like that. That being said...
I didn't really like the movie. I liked it, but not REALLY liked it. It was scary, true, in the horror movie as opposed to thriller movie sense; that I liked. Other than that I thought it dragged on, was unbelievable, and the acting was close to terrible. It did was it was going for very well, though. I think the 'found footage' phenom will be played out in a few years once the other studios get their hands on this style.
3 out of 5 stars.

Saw it last night now that it's finally playing in Indy. It was fantastic, and I'm not a big fan of horror movies...
Very creepy, great slow build. We actually saw a girl crying when everyone was leaving the (sold-out) theater.
