Kristen Bell Becomes a Burlesque Dancer
Cristina Aguilera's big-screen Burlesque debut is already a pretty interesting mix. We've got the slight girl with the powerful pipes, plus Cher returning to Hollywood as a nightclub owner and Stanley Tucci as the man who turns Aguilera's small-town girl "from bumpkin to bombshell." (Please tell me she's living in a lonely world.) But now, in a pretty wild twist, The Hollywood Reporter posts that Kristen Bell is joining the action as her rival. As the story goes, Aguilera's girl has "a big-town voice" and "finds love and success in a Los Angeles neo-burlesque club, reminiscent of the nightclub in Bob Fosse's Cabaret." Bell enters the mix as Nikki, "the loose-cannon lead dancer and main attraction at the club who spirals out of control" when Aguilera steals the spotlight.
Now, there are a lot of women I could imagine battling Aguilera. At the top of the list would probably be Scarlett Johansson. But Bell -- didn't see this coming. Presumably, the rivalry is all in the dance, and not the song, but even then -- nice twist for the geek princess and leading comedienne. But how will her burlesque be? A little slice of Showgirls? Striptease? Or maybe, just maybe, Reese Witherspoon's Ivy Miller in Overnight Delivery? Better yet -- Bell's first big mainstream dramatic gig. How do you see this all playing out?
Production begins next month and is slated for a release during Thanksgiving, 2010.

She might not be a Christina but Kristen can SANG. She's been on Broadway and in a couple TV musicals I think. She can dance too, if I remember my 2005 Emmys correctly.

Hello...that's right...didn't see this coming? Kristen Bell can sing. Scarlett Johannson has big breasts and can sing in a recording studio....kinda.
Bell is definitely the right one to challenge...Christina would wipe Scarlett off the stage and it wouldn't be pretty!
Others who can really sing in Hollywood...and I mean Broadway sing... Anne Hathaway, Evan Rachel Wood, Annaliese Van Der Pol, Megan Mullaly...oh, I know, too old...and Kristen Bell!

Yeah, Anne Hathaway can sing! What a truly talented actress! I'm thinking she has the potential to become the next Meryl Streep. lol

That is cool to hear Kristen Bell will be in this movie. Have been a fan of hers from Veronica Mars and on. So it nice to see her in a movie like this. Plus nice to see some one nice who can act over the norm. Not really a fan of Scarlett's. So am happy with this choice. Also it will be nice to see Kristen do some thing different. She has done some comedies and other stuff down those roads. So it will be interesting to see what she can do in this movie too. Plus on a side note will also be interesting to see how Cristina Aguilera does too.

Don't forget, Cam Gigandet is in "Burlesque" as well, as the male lead:

Kirsten Bell is defintely nowhere near the singer that Christina is but she is supposed to be upstaged anyway so it is not really that important.

As someone who has spent real time dealing with the backstage of burlesque for the last 4 years (in NYC) I can say that there is a distinct rivalry in the scene over skinny and cute vs. curvy and sultry. Christina is no where near what I would associate with a large woman but she's definitely curvier than KB who is adorable and my favorite triple threat.
In ability to sing Christina's voice may be just barely more powerful than Kristen's and they'll be sharing screen time with Cher so there should be serious singing in this flick.
By picking Bell they show themselves to be serious about the music because she is going to surprise the hell out of anyone who has never seen Reefer Madness. People are going to look at her cute face and demure frame and expect Aguilera to blow her away and I think she'll bring unbelievable talent to the flick.
I'm looking forward to seeing the turns the acts (performances) take and the gimmicks these ladies will adopt. With the level of stars we can assume its going to stay away from showgirls level nudity although we'll constantly hear this referred to as a stripper movie to get male audiences up... pasties/tassels and bottoms are pretty much the major delineators between burlesque and stripping. That and "strippers make money".
What I am least looking forward to is watching the deluge into the scene from every woman who watches the flick and thinks she's cute enough to perform. Then the inevitable burnout and if you don't believe me Shotime already has a crappy burlesque comedy show so just wait.
