I Knew It! Brett Ratner IS The Anti-Christ
Filed under: Action, DIY/Filmmaking, Newsstand, Comic/Superhero/Geek
OK, maybe not literally. I mean, the rise of Brett Ratner probably isn't a sign of the end-times, although anyone who saw Rush Hour 3 might feel a little differently. So say what you want about him as a director, at least he's not deluded about his place in film history. In an interview with Starpulse, the director that everyone loves to hate was promoting his DVD tribute, The Shooter Series, but the conversation soon drifted to Ratner's rep among the comic book crowd where he had a few choice words for his detractors, saying, "You can't make these people happy. I'm kind of the Anti-Christ to these comic book geeks. Every single person that wrote shit went to see that movie multiple times because a movie doesn't gross $200 something million unless people go to see it more than once. Every single person who said, "I'm never seeing that movie," they were the first ones there." It might pain me to say this, but the man has a point.
When it comes to our personal 'kinks' there isn't much that can keep fans away from the theater (case in point: I know I'll be there opening day for a Whedonless Buffy). But let's be honest: getting so-called geeks into the theater for the big-screen treatment of a beloved hero is the cinematic equivalent of shooting fish in a barrel. Yet that hasn't stopped Ratner from seeing everything he does as a huge success, telling Starpulse: "Mine [X-Men:The Last Stand] outgrossed the other two by far. Mine was the one that made the most narrative sense." The sound you just heard was my head hitting the keyboard ... repeatedly. But I guess that's one thing about Ratner that will never change: for him, box office will always be in direct proportion to quality.
After the jump: a Beverly Hills Cop IV update...
When he isn't busy pissing off X-Men fans, Ratner is still working on his installment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, and according to him, he's in talks with Eddie Murphy about the script and as soon as they have a completed draft the movie will go into production. Ratner admits to being a big fan of the original film, and told Starpulse that he's "aspiring to make a movie as good as the first one." That's a tall order, because if he thought comic book fans were tough, wait until fans of the 80's action icon get through with him.

The more guys like Ratner speak - the more lame they prove themselves to be...
I think it's been proven that just because your movie makes a ton of dough does not mean it is in anyway good - especially not if it the third in a trilogy (e.g. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, and Spiderman 3)
How jaded and arrogant - he's like the Kanye of Directors

what he is saying is too far off tract though if you are thinking is his and studio minds. love or hate it - the collective they (see his and studio) care about the box office numbers as evident by his comments.
"made the most narrative sense" - all relative
why shouldn't he toot his own horn? even if we think that ship should sink. i doubt you will find anyone saying "yeah what i made was okay and the weakest link of a triology or any movie."
you don't make it big unless you are talking a big game.. the follow through only starts to count when you can't pack theaters.

In all honesty...I enjoyed the third X-Men movie. I had never seen any other of Brett Ratner's movies, but I didn't have a huge problem with 'The Last Stand'.
I mean, trying to step in after what many people regarded as the best superhero movie ever (X-Men 2) was a ballsy move. I thought he integrated the new characters in a decent way, while not losing the old ones. I dunno...maybe I'm nuts.

I think its odd that he would use the argument that superhero movies don't make 200 million dollars unless people see them multiple times. He's implying that A) people really liked the movie and/or B) it was a good movie. However, recent box office returns have shown what people think of quality superhero flicks that they actually enjoyed (see Iron Man, Dark Knight). So I'd look at X-3 as more of a "damn, if we had made a decent movie we could've made 400 million dollars!" as opposed to pointing out how many people actually saw that piece of junk.

I loved the third X-Men movie, and I know I'm in the minority here, but I thought the first two sucked. Sure I'd change a few things, but overall it was far more satisfying to me, tons more action, with a super hero team that actually worked together instead of standing around and watching like they did in the first two. Also I think Bryan Singer is as overrated as Brett Ratner is villified. Superman Returns was a horrible bore. There, I said it! And I hope Singer never gets another chance to ruin a great comic character like that. I'm not saying that Ratner is Speilberg because he's not even close. But at least he knows what kind of filmmaker he is, and his movies make money despite all the hate towards him.

In that comment in the beginning, it's obvious Ratner is overestimating just how much of the moviegoing public consists of the same vocal fanboys that rip on him. I'm sure he's right that a bunch of the biggest complainers went to see X3 but I'm starting to realize that most people who go to see movies don't know or don't care who's directing. They go or don't go based on the actors and/or the story.
Or they go because the last installment was so good, they want to see another one. Like the case with X3. X2 was so good that, if you weren't aware of Brett Ratner or Brian Singer, you'd have no reason not to see X3. And there you have it. So if Christopher Nolan pulls out of Batman 3, will Ratner take it on and claim that he made the best one again?

he doesn't have a point, under his logic Grindhouse would have been a huge success because all the sites/forums/comments were talking about it
people who talk about movies online is a very small fraction of the total of people who go to the teather

So ... does Ratner believe that the biggest total BO outweighs number of total tickets sold, I wonder? Because movies change BO rankings if you take inflation and ticket prices into account.

You trying out to be a screenwriter for a Ratner movie? Your wit and clever dialogue has won me over! Go write "X-men 4: Why its ok to rape 13 yr old kids!" Or whatever Ratner's next movie is gonna be called.
As for your suggestion... I think I'll pass on it. Doesn't really sound appealing to me. But if you're into that stuff.. knock yourself out and have at it. When your down in hell perhaps you can pick a nice spot for Roman to built his townhouse there.. get it all ready for his arrival.

The dude needs to do some reading. In order for him to be the anti-christ people would have to like him first. The last stand sucked compared to the other X films and the Rush hour movies are terrible too. The most unfortunate thing is that people are too stupid to stop seeing his crap films.
