Sam Raimi Talks 'Spider-Man 4' Villains

I can't wait for the day when Spider-Man 4 leaves the world of speculation, and moves before the camera. Until that day, we can enjoy plenty of rumors and hints as to who or what Spidey will be battling in #4. Sam Raimi recently gave a few more riddles to the MTV Splash Page, revealing that they still don't have a villain for Spider-Man 4. While Raimi "loves" the story of the Lizard, the Spider-Man team isn't exactly looking to tie up those little mentions of Dr. Curt Connors. Instead, look for a baddie who will toy with Peter's internal and external demons a little bit: "What we're trying to do right now is really understand the journey Peter is going to go on this time and have the villain maybe be a counter to that growth, something that he has to overcome. Or maybe he has to grow in a way to overcome the villain, because there always seem to be stories of coming of age, of a young man growing up and learning things about life, so once we are identifying the exact movement that Peter has to grow to, I think the villain-and we're trying this right now; we're trying to choose a villain based on who would be the proper counter to that growth, so we really have dramatic conflict."
With several drafts and screenwriters behind them, and Spider-Man 4 set to go before cameras in March or April, I'm honestly surprised they still don't have a villain in mind. Naturally, Raimi might be exaggerating and they are working with one (there's a coy "I can't say" at the beginning), but I find its sketchiness a bit troubling. What about you, Cinematical readers and Spidey fans? And does Raimi's latest riddle give you any indication of who the villain might be?

If they don't have a villain how are they ready to shoot in March or April? Last I checked, you can't exactly have a finished script without knowing what the story's going to be.

That's what he has said about EVERY villain they have used, not to mention every script.
Maybe they should just use Carnage, this way they can try to make up for how poorly Venom was used.

You know what, I have never liked Raimi's casting in this series. Green Goblin and Dr. Octopus, OK, they were well cast, but the rest of the characters, thumbs down.
Kiki Dunst- not as bad as everyone says, but not too great either.
Sandman- Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz....
Tobey Maguire- Can he play Spiderman with any less energy? It's like he's 1/2 asleep when he says his lines. I always thought Ben Affleck would of made a good Spiderman. But then what do I know.

Mysterio could play a factor in growing up and overcoming his tricks and riddles. The Chameloen would also have the same effect. Then again, Kraven The Hunter could also be the one because Peter constantly being hunted could have to make him change his ways.
Hmm, I don't know let's just hope it's better than #3.

Isn't that what the last craptastic sequel was about?

I hope that the fact that they don't have a villian yet means the movie won't be made. The first was OK -- the special effects were really a step or two above what I thought they were going to be, and that made up for wooden acting and a poor storyline.
The second -- the one that everyone raves about -- was awful. I think I'm missing something big here, but I'm not willing to invest the time to watch it again.
The third ... well, if that didn't destroy the series, I don't know what will. Too many villains, poor use of Venom, who could have been a really cool character and an incomprehensible plot along with the now-tired (previously awesome) special effects.
What's left for the fourth? Is this going to be like Batman 4, where they toss a dozen new bad guys in, tons of star power, spidey-nipples and neon lights? Meh. I'm OK with it never being made.

BEN AFFLECK as spider man... GET outta here...
You didnt like Aunt Mae? Or Uncle Owen?
Its all fine. Casting is fine, they just need a good script and less of sony pressuring them to change things.

Affleck now, no. Affleck when he was young, yes. I said I don't know what I was talking about, right? His personality would work better as Spiderman than Mr Stiff. Cameron wanted to cast DiCaprio as Spiderman after he make Titanic. Would you of preferred that instead?
I never liked Aunt May. She has always been my least favorite character ever in comics. Such a buzz kill. I have gotten yelled at people for saying so believe it or not, but I just find her to be so annoying. Uncle Ben, he's OK, but I prefer his rice better.

With all the mention of internal and external struggles and the growth he will go through sounds like there going the mutation route, where Spidey turns into the 'Man-Spider'

THE RETURN OF VENOM.
and the introduction of Carnage.
improve Venom's acting and make Carnage ridiculously creepy so that the movie is as close to R as possible, but still PG-13.
there's my vote.

Take back to the old school and bring back The Rhino! I'd also like to see Kingpin in one of the Spider-Man movies. I think Michael Clarke Duncan was a decent Kingpin in Affleck's "Daredevil", but Kingpin is originally the villian of Spider-Man.

I reallly really want them to go with the Morlun. that arc is so awesome. Plus, it doesn't have much MJ in it... just saying. or if they at least base it on that. I'd be super curious about who'd they cast for Ezekiel or Morlun for it.
If Carnage comes into play, Jackie Earle Haley HAS to play Cletus Kasady!

Obviously, he's hinting at Electro.
I kid.
I like the idea I heard tossed around way back of Bruce Campbell as Mysterio or Chameleon, and that the characters he played throughout the trilogy were actually the same guy.
I think they need to do something with John Jameson, the guy who was just in outer space... who's fiance Peter stole (back) in part 2... whose uncle also happens to hate Spidey.

As much as I hate when there are too many villians, (I think it dilutes the story), I think there should be 3 "villains" in the next one. As you'll see from my list, only 1 would truely be evil.
1) Black Cat - Is Peter & MJ's relationship strong enough to endure a hot woman that can keep up with Spider-man. (MJ's had another man, Peter, another woman... so its Spidey's turn)
2) Scorpion - Johnah finally gets proactive in his crusade against Spider-man. Peter has to deal with this new threat from an old adversary while at the same time...
3) Lizard (finally) - Peter needs to stop the wild, rampaging lizard, but doesn't want to hurt his friend/mentor Dr Connors.
What do you guys think? Love the idea of Scorpion, since it means MORE JOHNAH!

They should do the sinister Six Kraven, Misterio, Vulture, Sandman, Scorpion, and Rino. Also throw Lizard and Carnige into the mix.

well i read that they were possibly going to run the next saga across two movies made at the same time so a 4 and 5 i think keeping it simple is the best idea i love the black cat idea and the carnage idea my vote sara michelle gellar (black cat) and jim carrie or maybe johnny depp(carnage) of course SM4 should focus mostly on the black cat saga maybe throw in scorpion(will ferril) for some filler but he was a pussy so he shouldnt be that big of a role and end off with carnage's arrival and play that out for SM5 with maybe a daredevil or fantastic four cameo or a blade cameo and bring in morbius(collin ferrille) but a new peter parker is a must im thinking fredie prince jr or collin hanks

I think that Sam Raimi is the wrong director for Spiderman 4. He did very well with Spiderman 1 and even made it BETTER than the comic by using the idea of spiderman 2099 and making him have the webbing in his forearm, but when i read about spiderman 2 and how he wanted to focus more on Peter Parker, I knew it wouldn't be as good as the first, and I felt as though I was right. Then he made Spiderman 3......I don't care how much money he made with that movie, I have never to this day heard one single person tell me how great it was. You don't add a classic villian such as Venom in such short notice. I realize that the comic did focus a lot on Peter Parker, but those are the parts that both myself and most other people flipped the pages through to get to SPIDERMAN! It's ok to focus on Peter Parker's struggles to get through "life," but don't overdo it this time Sam. Focus on what everyone TRULY wants to see and you won't have to worry about everyone viewing you as the director that DESTROYED a potentially great movie about a fascinating comic book superhero like SPIDERMAN!
