Everything You Need to Know About 2012 to See '2012' (And Then Some)
Perhaps you've seen the ominous ads for Roland Emmerich's latest disaster film, 2012. Here you can see just one example of Sony's viral campaign, which I spotted outside of my apartment building a few months ago. The Mayans warned us? Why is the URL at the bottom ThisIsTheEnd.com? Enter that into your browser, and you'll find a site "run" by one of the characters in the movie who believe the world will end in 2012, which is just what seems to be happening in Emmerich's upcoming blow-'em'-up. (Incidentally, the website looks pretty much like lots of the real 2012 websites and books out there.)
But what is 2012? Why do people – lots of people, in fact – think the world is going to end on December 21, 2012? It's a fairly popular conspiracy theory, as these things go, right up there with Nostradamus. (And definitely more popular than the guy who believes the world is run by lizard people.) Back it up and let's take an all-too-brief look at the Mayan civilization and religion and why the date 12/21/2012 has got some people nervous.
Who Were the Mayans?
The Mayans were a technologically advanced Mesoamerican culture that lived in the Yucatan Peninsula and parts of Central America. The Mayans truly flourished in the Classic period, which was around 600 years between AD 300 to AD 900. During that time, the Mayans developed a more complex social order, as well as city-states with prosperous trade. There were also plenty of impressive palaces, pyramids, and ceremonial structures, but perhaps the most significant aspect of the Mayan civilization is their discoveries about science and astronomy, which led them to develop a sophisticated series of calendars. One of those calendars just so happens to end on December 21, 2012.
The Mayan Calendars
The Mayans actually have several kinds of calendars, but I'm only going to discuss three of them, since those are the ones most important to the 2012 theory.

One kind of calendar the Mayans created, the Tzolkin, reflected the approximate cycle of a human pregnancy, 260 days; the different deities and astrological positions associated with each day of this cycle was thought to influence each person based on their birth date. It was a sacred calendar, whereas the other calendar, the Haab, was based on the sun cycles. It lasted 360 days, plus an extra five that were unlucky -- sort of like five Days of the Dead in a row. What's interesting is that the Mayans found a way to make the two work together so that they created one bigger cycle that was perfectly synchronized every 52 years. The combined calendar, also known as the calendar round, is represented by a symbol that looks like gears with interlocking teeth. By adjusting and consulting each "gear," the Mayans could calculate days, dates, eclipses, agricultural events, and the like. (If you look at the 2012 website, the animated image on the first page is a combination of the various Mayan calendars.)
But the one that has everyone nervous is the long count calendar. The Mayans used the calendar round to predict the near future, but the long count calendar is used for more far-reaching predictions. In a nutshell, without getting into the various units of time for the long count, the long count cycle consists of thirteen baktuns, or 1,872,000 days, or about 5,125 years – the last day of the long count is December 21, 2012.
So What's So Big About December 21, 2012?
Two Mayan prophecies, one in The Book of Chilam Balam and one inscription on a monument in Tortuguero, sort of imply that the long count cycle bodes the end of times – if you want to read them that way.

Because the Mayans were so advanced in astronomy and science, among other things, the fact that their calendar abruptly ends has some conspiracy-minded folks more than a little nervous. New Age-y peeps have managed to connect 2012 to crop circles, the Age of Aquarius, Terence McKenna's LSD-laced visions, changes in the climate, and shifts in the Earth's north and south poles. There are also end-of-world prophecies from Nostradamus and the Pythia, otherwise known as Oracle at Delphi, among others. (As it turns out, the cave at Delphi might have, uh, been filled with trippy vapors that "inspired" the Pythia's prophecies.) Newsweek calls it "Y2K for the new age." TV shows like The History Channel's "Decoding the Past: Doomsday 2012 - The End of Days" also spread the gospel of 2012. A cynic might say it's a cottage industry.
But...
Modern-day Mayans are not having it! According to the AP,
"Apolinario Chile Pixtun is tired of being bombarded with frantic questions about the Mayan calendar supposedly "running out" on Dec. 21, 2012. After all, it's not the end of the world.Or is it?
Definitely not, the Mayan Indian elder insists. 'I came back from England last year and, man, they had me fed up with this stuff.'"
Neither are astronomers, archeologists, and many other people who discredit the theories – and in some cases attribute the 2012 phenom to Westerners.
"'If I went to some Mayan-speaking communities and asked people what is going to happen in 2012, they wouldn't have any idea,' said Jose Huchim, a Yucatan Mayan archaeologist. 'That the world is going to end? They wouldn't believe you. We have real concerns these days, like rain.'"What might happen on December 21, 2012? We won't know until we get there. Maybe a paradigm shift in consciousness. Maybe the end of the world, Roland Emmerich-style. Maybe we'll be saved by John Cusack. Or maybe nothing.
See ya then!

Maybe they just ran out of room on the rock or just thought that 5,000 years was enough. It's like with the whole computer date thing in 2000 with the dates being set back to 1900 because programmers only thought so far ahead. Everything will be fine and if not hopefully John Cusack and Oliver Platt will be around to save me.

as i grow older, i find less interest in longevity. one thing we can be sure of...we as individuals are mortal...doomed. and that is at birth. so if we all went together in that fateful day, what a fortuitous event for us all to experience together. would make woodstock look pathetic.

No ones gonna do it but there are always dumb people out there any way. Like the person who got 18 washers (the ones for plumbing) stuck around his penis and had to call the fire department. That was in Australia fyi... i think.

Mmmm You don't really need to do any of that other than its going to be 2hrs of corny escapist cheese with the hideous child surviving due to the Dads ridiculous far fetched ability to fly between every earthquake, sunami, disaster going. You do need to know that you will probably feel cheated by the syrupy ending and that were the world going to end in 2012 then it is purely due to over consumtion of fossil fuels and water at the hands of greedy US multi-nationals. Nothing you I or the Mayans or the syrupy cheesy little girl who survives can do anything about. But never mind a few people make tons of cash in the short term an the public stay blissfully ignorant but passively lulled into not caring!! I still may see it just so I can flesh out this argument in the pub afterwards !!

I wouldn't take this so lightly. There is ample evidence that the poles will in fact shift in late 2012 during the maximum pull of the sun and moon. They laughed at Noah too.

2012 was never about the world ending. Actually humanity is always dreaming of that day, we are a bunch of fatalists fascinated with our own end. The mayan calendar was figured to be, by researchers, an alignment of our solar system with the equator of the universe. Its more of an astronomy idea. They were well known astronomers. Others, which I agree with, think that this alignment is merely the external reflection of the internal consciousness shift. It takes a deeply spiritual person to understand this truly and not brush it off. Someone who studies their direct connection to reality so much that they can see everything in every moment is there for them. The mayans and aztecs and olmecs were all contributors to these calendar systems but the mayans perfected the most recent iteration. They supposedly created it over 5000 years ago based on cycles of energy. They tracked this trough history and alignments and eventually realized that life was in effect a rhythm, even if the results were infinitly chaotic in manifestation.
To try and make this clear, its quite scientific. We, and everything, are literally light. We are part of an infinity. Time as we perceive it is actually perception of change of self. We view it as external change but you must make the connection that nothing else exists but you, the observer, in order for you to see clearly. 2012 is not the end in the finite sense. Its a time when consciousness shifts yet again. So in a way it is the end, but its also the beginning. Beginning of a realization (revelation) of self. The word apocalypse is thrown around but was originally conceived in 1384 and means simply, a "revelation", a revealing. Revelation in those days, if you look at the etimology, meant "disclosure of information to man by a divine or supernatural agency," Take all this and realize that you are divine and this energy is working in you and outside of you in this very moment (which is every moment). Everything is conscious of you.
We wont find ourselves in a new universe necessarily. Not anymore than normal. We will find ourselves in an infinity and realize our true potential.
The movie that is coming out is quite fascinating. It plays more on the fatalistic fear driven energy. I think its a great metaphor for inner change. If you look at it as a metaphor it is quite clear that we all go through this every time we face our biggest fears. We run from them. They inevitably consume us, even if that lasts 50 years, and we go through the hard fear and come out on the other side better off. Think of the worst events in your life... I don't think you would take them back now. You see a little more clearly now and thus are a little more free because of it. Now imagine you let go of everything and find yourself divinely free, RIGHT NOW. What would you do? Would you still yell at your wife and beat your kids. Or would you remember that that is a choice you are making out of the infinity you are in.
I hope this sheds light to someone out there.

I wonder if some people are going to use the end of the world in 2012 as a pick-up line, as in "the world's about to end, and wouldn't you like to go out with a bang" or something on that level..
Don't know why that came to my mind. lol. Sorry.
@David...
Thanks for the interesting explanation about 2012. In the end, it's about embracing the things we fear and rising above them. Good thought, no matter what the year my bring.

Suppose the Maya were of the generations of the Dogon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogon , that mentioned of the so-called historic landing of space-man and space woman as depicted on the cave drawings(http://www.eceti.org/EcetiUFOHistory/caveufo.jpg) and I myself am kinda lost but the history of the origional birth of the history of these peoples were "supposedly derived from such cave drawings'. If you landed to a planet with little and practically no means of what you were use to; how would you depict where you came from and who you were/are? We ourselves ask 'what's your name and where are you from/', within our own united states/country/continent etc... .! Maybe the Mayans were from the origional landing of the first two from another planet and 'made do' with their surroundings; not knowing if they would live the next day, week, month and grabbed what they could, that they may perhaps be remembered in some way. Maybe that's part of Biblical faith that we should sincerely adhere to. Maybe the Mayans were of this tribe of peoples and were snatched back to their home. Even scientists have revealed(through our own science of science)that time is a purposed faction of our lives for our own personal understanding, within our own world, here on earth. Have I gone too far? Let me know....
