Break Out The Hankies! It's Channing Tatum in the 'Dear John' Trailer

Filed under: Drama, Romance, Newsstand, Trailers and Clips

I'll come right out and say it: the trailer for Dear John made me cry. It was just a wee little tear or two, but man... weepy romances really know how to get to me. Especially when they come from the writer and studio that brought us that epic Ryan Gosling-Rachel McAdams romance, The Notebook. Damn you, Nicholas Sparks!

Grab a Kleenex and watch Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried in the trailer for Dear John after the jump.

From the looks of it, Channing Tatum doesn't do much dancing or street fighting here, although he does play another American soldier character – call it Dear G.I. John. Tatum plays John Tyree, a hunky young man who meets and falls in love with Savannah Curtis (Seyfried) while on leave from the Army. When he's deployed, they maintain their love through letters until...well, you'll just have to see it (or read the book) to find out.

Director Lasse Halström (The Cider House Rules, Chocolat) seems to know his audience. The trailer gives us Channing Tatum shirtless, Channing Tatum vulnerable, and Channing Tatum in action. There's even a romantic kissing scene in the rain! Amanda Seyfried, whose star has risen thanks to Mamma Mia! and Jennifer's Body, could probably sleepwalk through this movie and still acquit herself.

And who knows? Between Dear John and the excellent John Keats biopic Bright Star, maybe the art of the love letter will come back into vogue.

Dear John opens February 6, 2010 – just in time for Valentine's Day.
