Rumor Patrol: Wes Craven Will Direct 'Scream IV'

If you were one of the people who thought that another Scream movie was a bad idea (and who could blame you after the train wreck that was Scream 3), there might be a ray of hope...but I have to stress might. Over at Cinema Blend, their 'reliable source' is telling them that the man himself, Wes Craven, will return to direct the latest installment in the horror franchise. It had been reported that Craven would be involved in some capacity with the film back when the project was first green lit, but you have to wonder what might have convinced him to get behind the camera. Maybe it was all down to nostalgia and he wanted to get together with the old gang, or maybe it was Kevin Williamson's spec script. One thing is for sure, the big empty spot in his schedule since finishing 25/8 probably wouldn't hurt either. (By the way, 25/8 was just re-named My Soul to Take.)
Back in July, there were hints that the film was going to be a complete reboot, but once we found out that Neve Campbell and the Arquette-Coxes would be returning, a straight remake seemed unlikely. So this all sounds like any Scream fan's dream come true, right? You've got the original director, screenwriter, and cast all involved. Well, not so fast, because according to Cinema Blend's sources (and Erik's prediction), the original cast will only be appearing in cameos, and that they will be handing the reigns over to a new group of teens/cannon fodder -- and by handing over the reigns, I mean horribly murdered before the opening credits have rolled.
Do you think there's hope for Scream IV if Craven does direct, and would you be disappointed if the original cast didn't stick around? Sound off in the comments...

Sorry but I couldn't get past the fact that you thought Scream 3 was the train-wreck - actually it was Scream 2 - part 3 was superior is every way. What does the rest of the article say as I can't believe anything else you wrote?

Yeah I agree with the guy below me.
Scream 3 was fantastic compared to 2. Scream 2 was bollocks. the reason being that they changed the ending after the script was leaked. so that ruined everything. but love 3, I actually think 3 is the better all round film compared to the first two. (though I still hold the original in higher regard)
but anyway, on topic. if craven doesn't direct this will blow. it NEEDS craven. it can't breathe without him.

I have good hopes... Wes Craven said the script was fantastic in another article. Scream 1 & 2 were awesome, Scream 3 was actually pretty decent. If we hand it over to another group of teens I think it gives the killer something else to do, so don't hate on this yet! This film is going to be a major surprise

Ironically I just watched all 3 back to back in one day a couple weeks ago.
Scream 2 is really bad and terribly contrived (Laurie Metcalfs (and Olyfantastics to a smaller extent) brutal overacting did not help it's climax). Scream 3 by comparison was good and sort of turned the series back on itself appropriately, though by itself it's still pretty limp. Problem is both sequels did that usual sequel thing by trying to follow the formula of the first thinking no one would notice.
The first one, by itself, is still rather good. I remember first watching it and being shocked by the death of the only actual movie star in the first 10 minutes (something probably not done since Psycho some 30 years earlier). Plus of course it did a good job of rebooting horror movies at the time, until falling into the cliche's the first tried so hard to poke fun at.
If Scream 4 wants to succeed in the spirit of the original it needs to look at garbage like the Saw films and all these half-assed horror reboots and lampoon them. The question is whether the victims have to become completely 80's slasher stupid all over again or much more aware than the half-aware victims of the first 3 and have the killer properly imposing. An idea that may work would be a killer who's actually aware of the first 3 as movies. Basically have the new characters watching Stab 4 (or even better.. Stab: The New Beginning) where the original cast gets offed... or something..
