Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio Remaking 'The Third Man'?

An intriguing remake rumor has popped up on CHUD. Devin Faraci is reporting that longtime friends Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio might star in a remake of Carol Reed's classic thriller The Third Man. Canal Plus is said to be shopping around the project, which includes a screenplay penned by Steven Knight. The details are scarce (and it may not happen at all), so it's not known whether this would be a straight up-remake or a rewrite, or who Maguire or DiCaprio would be playing. But the idea is enough to undoubtedly cause reactions of anger and panic around film fans, but think about this calmly. It's not as though Maguire, DiCaprio, or Knight are untalented slouches, and it's the kind of story that could be given a modern rewrite and stand on its own feet. I would actually love to see this rewritten, and set in Iraq or Afghanistan. I'd love to see it set it in years immediately preceding the Soviet Union, putting Harry Lime and Holly Martins in the dangerous, free-for-all Yeltsin economy. (Faraci suggests making it sci-fi, which would be very brave and very awesome.)
The Third Man is one of those stories like Dashiell Hammet's Red Harvest that is flexible enough to work in another adaptation and lose nothing of its original power. I'm very curious to see if this comes together, and in what form. DiCaprio would be the perfect actor to play the smirking Lime. I just hope they don't mimic my favorite scene. Some things are better left to Welles.

AWESOME! It's about time! I was getting sick of that ugly Black & white picture and that horrible soundtrack! and Orson Wells is fat! [/Target audience that does not exist?]

Honestly, some things "in their entire glory" are better left to Wells. Here's a couple of other boring old movies they could redo and vamp up to their lovely standards: How about Gone With The Wind or The God Father, they are now kinda old now, time to squeeze some more juice from their fame and glory. How about remaking 2001, only this time, more talk and action, a bit faster so teens will get into it! Sad.

I know Red Harvest has been done to the likes of Yojimbo and Last Man Standing, but I would love to see a straight adaptation of Hammet's Red Harvest, as the book was more impressive to me than The Maltese Falcon. It would make for a nice period throwback.
As for The Third Man, I never saw the appeal. There were some classic scenes, no doubt, Orson's speech, the sewer chase, etc, and of course, the zither, but the story wasn't very appealing. And the concept of whether Lime is dead or not isn't a mystery when you know who stars in the movie.

Horrible idea. Just horrible.
First, you can't put it in Vienna. You'd have to modernize it. So where are you going to put it? Iraq? Afghanistan? You do and you can kiss that wonderful sewer-scene ending good-bye.
Second, I'd guess Tobey Macguire would play the Joseph Cotton role, leaving Dicaprio the Welles role. Imagine the well-known Welles introduction scene or the merry-go-round scene with Dicaprio. Dreadful? Not that Welles was menacing, but he at least had the kind of charm to pull the role off of an indifferent black-marketeer (with a conniving smile). You certainly (in my opinion) can't pull that off with either Macguire or Dicaprio in that role.
Third, sure the soundtrack is not very popular (though it is oddly iconic - watch Vin Diesel's XXX when they sneak it into one of those club scenes), but if the story manages to stay in "some" big city (again who knows where), what kind of soundtrack will you have. Actually the soundtrack fights nicely for the story.
Fourth, with Cotton and Welles you at least had actors who look like they might have been around awhile; their characters look like they have some experience in life. You don't get that with this younger, non-threatening looking cast. We have not even approached who the female lead would be.
About the only thing you will get moderately correct if the cinematography. Most b&w remakes of that period and ilk always look like wonderful color homages to film noir (whether or not you consider The Third Man noir).
(A bit over the top, but) next we can make a Seth Rogan-Jonah Hill remake of Touch of Evil.

How dumb can you get. Lightweights like DiCaprio and Maguire are going to captivate us like Cotton and Welles?

It is obvious with remakes that Hollywood are bereft of ideas. It is evident that they are creatively bankrupt. If this goes ahead it could be dreadful!

This kinda scares me. When I finally saw The Third Man I was on a Noir tear and loving everything I found, but this blindisded me and blew me out of the water. I mean just stunning.
Now I've grown to see DiCaprio as amazing and potentially my favorite current star and I totally agree he could be a brilliant Harry Lime. As for Maguire, I find him to be a good actor and would have no problem watching him but him as Holly Martins is up in the air. Also, I fear for the script changes being a huge flop.
