Paramount Eyes 'Paranormal Activity' Sequel

We'll have our full box office report tomorrow morning, but we should let you know now that, as expected (and reported back on Saturday morning), Paranormal Activity has claimed its first weekend win, slicing and dicing its way through Saw VI (only $14 million) on its way to a $22 million take. Naturally, Paramount wasted no time in announcing that they may indeed pursue a Paranormal Activity sequel if it seems like the right move to make. Speaking to the LA Times, Paramount Chairman Brad Grey said, "We have the rights on a worldwide basis to do Paranormal 2, and we're looking to see if that makes some sense."
Well, considering that this little film with a budget of $11,000 could give the studio its greatest return ever, something tells me a sequel makes a whole lotta sense to the folks crunching numbers. That said, I'm not the only one who remembers the gigantic piece of moose crap that was Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, and so if Paramount is going to try to turn Paranormal Activity into some sort of franchise, they'll have to do so very carefully.
Personally, I'd rather see them invest in writer-director Oren Peli and his other fun, low-budget ideas than to see them throw a few million and some over-the-top special effects at a sequel that will never live up to the original. Let's face it, like Blair Witch before it, a lot of the fun with Paranormal Activity came in discovering it through word of mouth instead of through the normal Hollywood marketing system. It was (and still is) an underdog, and folks love the underdog. The same won't be said for the sequel.
What do you think they should do here?

Actually, I think if they do anything, they should do a prequel. Remember, the female lead mentioned that this “thing” had followed her from one place to the next.

I would agree a prequeal would be the best route. Just my .02 cents.

Superb idea!! It would be great to recall what happened to her as a kid and when the family home burned down!!

They shouldn't make a sequel/prequel. The miniamalist approch they used for this was perfect. What's going to happen is they are going to try to repeat the approch, re-making the same movie, or go all visual and it wouldn't be the same. Sounds like a lose/lose situation. Just have the creators (writer/director/producers) make something totally different.

Meh overhyped movie. it's full of 100 boring minutes and not a single scary thing in it. This easily could have been easily 20-30 minute movie, maybe i'd like it more then. This and Transformers 2 were 2 worst movies i've seen all year.

I thought the movie was a big let down and a waste of good money. I hated the first one so why pay to be disappointed a second time. To many other good movies out there for that to happen.

A lot of people have been so over exposed to extreme violence that when they see such a subtle thing as a light turning on or off by itself or a door opening and closing by itself there is not fear factor. And only when a thinking person says to themselves, "wait a minute, what CAUSED that to happen?" When there is no explanation the chills begin to creep up your spine. But if you’re so intent on seeing the knife welding murderer behind the door or through the darkness you never ask yourself that question. It really takes a thinking person to feel the dread that you never see. For those whose dread must be seen to be afraid this movie will not be scary. For those whose imagination is often more frightening than the real thing, this movie will have you sleeping with all the lights on, hoping that they will not turn off by themselves. This was a good scary movie for this thinking man.

I agree with NashCastle. We are so overexposed to blood and gore that we only think horror flicks can come in that form. I am so tired of those types of movies - - I saw this movie on Friday and it still creeps me out. Hands down, one of the best horror movies I have seen. I only hope that Hollywood doesn't ruin a good thing and make a sequel --- it wouldn't be the same.

the more wasnt scary and it was kinda boring but the movie did have some good parts the thing on day 5 that thing when she got dragged out of bed and that cool shadow effect on the door i agree with NashCastle and Nichole it was one of those movies that made me sleep with the tv on and checking behind me when i walked into my living room alone at 3 am in the morning, i would see the next part of it, plus its good business this underdog no name movie comes out of left field and smacks the saw franchise out of the #1 spot lol now thats funny! in addition the movie did have me researching its orgin ( LA times had a snip it on it about the director taking the dvd home and some how getting locked out of his bedroom with no one in it now if thats true there maybe some truth to this paranormal activity crap)
i recommend this movie if you've got $12 doors to burn and a bunch of patience friends to see it with

I have to agree with comment that likes and dislikes this idea. I mean one must be curious about the previous situation with this woman and what exactly happened when their house burnt. Having said that, what fun would it make? Its not original and the thought of what happened in the end of the first film spoils much of what is there to see in the prequel.
So in conclusion I'll say let that director do something new instead. And by the way this film was not scary at all its only over hyped. Doesnt come near the fear factor of the Exorcist or other classic horror films.
