Bruckheimer to Adapt 'Shattered Union' Video Game
Filed under: Action, Disney, Games and Game Movies, War
Now how's this for a cool premise? "U.S. states secede from the U.S. and form their own governments that wage a civil war against each other after Washington, D.C., is wiped out in a nuclear blast and chaos ravages the nation." Sounds like it could make for a fairly novel action flick, eh? Well, as Variety informs us, that's the exact plot of a 2005 video game called Shattered Union. (Just because I've never heard of it doesn't mean it's not good. If you've played this one, leave us a mini-review in the comments section.)The tale of a dystopian American Civil War Part II will come from producer Jerry Bruckheimer (don't act surprised), who in turn will entrust the adaptation to one J. Michael Straczynski. Serious genre fans know this gentleman as the co-creator of Babylon 5. He's written tons of TV, in addition to Eastwood's Changeling, plus he's got a metric ton of massive projects on the way, World War Z and Silver Surfer among them. The studio will be Disney, so don't expect a hardcore carnage-fest. I'm generally a fan of the Bruckheimer / Disney action conflagrations, and this one sure sounds like something I'd dig. Now hire Peter Berg to direct it.

I've played the game before. One of the worst wastes of rental money i've ever blown. Absolutely pathetic gameplay. Haha, but the concept and idea was good, at least in my opinion, and I think this'll be an interesting movie... Haha, Hollywood tends to make horrible movies based on good games, so maybe they can make a good movie out of a horrible game.

I played it on the P.C. when it came out. Fairly unmemorable game. I rememeber being drawn in by the story though.

Also, from the way you describe the movie, it sounds just like Jericho, and I would be much happier if they made a movie from the ashes of that ya know.

Not a bad game but doesn't have the polish nor action for the general audience. It's old school game with turn-based mechanics and not appealing to the ADD crowd. Still, looks like it was pushed out early, something not uncommon from Take 2. Had great potential, just not refined enough. It's like the games cut scenes, they get the point across and hint at something very cool but just not polished.
Jericho is only reminiscent of Shattered Union because of the nukes and government collapse. Everything else seems pretty unrelated. Plus this came out more than a year earlier. However, it may be similar in that only fans of SU and Fans of Jericho wanted more.
Perhaps a movie about SU and game about Jericho would be a winning strategy?
