Re-Imaginings That Get It: Extended 'Alice in Wonderland' Trailer
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips
Note: This is not a new trailer, but an extended trailer.Ah, that dreaded black cloud known as the remake/re-imagining. It hovers, eliciting a neverending sense of ire in the moviegoing public. Yes, some of the backlash comes from nothing more than passionate fandom. But it also comes from how these projects come to be. Studios grab them willy nilly with nothing but dollar signs flashing in the eyes. Projects hit that could never even dream of being even half as good as the original. And many just don't seem to get it -- preferring to keep the name and ravage both the story and the spirit of the original, rather than just using it as a jumping point for inspiration.
And while it may be a bit premature, the trailers for Alice Wonderland have a definite sense of getting it. A new trailer aired during the Scream Awards (check it out after the jump), and while it's really Mad Hatter-centric again (I want more of the Queens!), it's got the feel of the subject. Sure, we've all got our favorite Alice incarnations and ideas on how it should be, but Tim Burton seems to have a definite sense of how to evoke the same whimsical feel within his vision. It's not copycat, nor wildly diverging from what we're used to.
The FX flow beautifully, that sense of fun is in every scene, and within the first few moments, I actually started imagining some of my favorite mystical films getting a similar treatment. I would never want Labyrinth without Jim Henson and David Bowie, yet I can't help but imagine the film updated with today's technology. This is what these films should do -- warm you to the idea because they're good -- because they understand their subject and know how to invoke the same passion.
Has Burton charmed you with his vision?

I am very excited for this. I've always enjoyed the story of Alice, and I've been a fan of Burton since I was little.

This isn't new, it's the same one that's been kicking around the internet for awhile, though the beginning is slightly different since they moved the back end to the front.
As for my thoughts, ... meh. Still too much Willy Wonka in my Mad Hatter.

I've grown tired of Burton. I was hoping Big Fish was finally Burton growing out of this silly goth phase and into some more adult visual storytelling...nope. I was bored with Sweeney Todd and plan to skip this movie entirely.
Wake me when Burton stops rehashing the same visual iconography he's used since Beetlejuice.

I personally enjoy the majority of Tim Burton's work, but I do think that in the last several years it's gone to where he does things that are odd just for the sake of being odd. Sure, his visual style is what draws a lot of people in, but his films also had good stories with a lot of heart that kept people interested. Those are the reasons I rewatch films like Edward Scissorhands and Big Fish.
But I thought that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was just too over-the-top. It's like he said, hey let's see how bizarre I can make this film and have people still go to see it. The story just got lost in the spectacle of the film. And it seems like that's what he's doing with Alice in Wonderland from all the previews I've seen so far. I'll probably still see it at some point, but it just looks like it's all style and no substance. It's not like he doesn't have great source material to work with--he's just losing himself in making things look Tim Burton-y instead of concentrating on just making a good film.

Over-the-top is fine, it's Alice in Wonderland after all but I'm uncomfortable when Burton makes a movie from a previous beloved story. I love Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands but I was disappointed in Sleepy Hollow and I didn't like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because of the back story for Willy Wonka; that wonderful story didn't need any embellishment!

Can't wait for Burton's Wonderland ! This story, like any good one, is open, visually anyway, to all types of interpretations. And who better than one of our generation's most influential and more importantly, especially considering THIS story, creative filmmakers.
Haters, hate on and stay home...this shit is gonna be dope !
