New 'Avatar' Trailer Washes Away Skepticism
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, 20th Century Fox, Trailers and Clips
It's no secret that James Cameron's Avatar has been fighting an up-hill battle for years. Film geeks, particularly those who spend most of their time online, are a tough crowd to uniformly please, so early buzz on the film was as much an excitement accelerator as it was a dare to dislike. When the first trailer for the film was at long last unveiled back in August, it was met with incredulous, befuddled cries of "Is that it?"
If, like myself, you were disappointed with that first teaser, and if, like myself, you avoided Avatar Day and any subsequent new marketing tactics outside of the normal trailer build up, then maybe this new, full trailer for Cameron's return to science fiction will be the first time you set aside your cynicism and think "Alright, I get what all the fuss is about now." This second trailer is nearly identical to the international trailer that has been making the online rounds lately, except there's one huge difference: this isn't a blurry hint of things to come. Yahoo has the debut, and we all know that means a crystal-clear, HD if-you-want-it look at the alien world of Pandora.
Unlike the first trailer, there's no teasing going on here; this is an exposition-heavy tour of the film's plot, characters, and, most importantly, alien Na'vi. Not only do we have more than one line of dialog now, but we're given context-relevant glimpses at what will, I no longer doubt, be the must-see spectacle film of 2009.
Click on over to Yahoo and check it out. If this expanded foray into jungle battles doesn't get you pumped for December 18th, I don't think anything will.

No, not Fern Gully - I got Pocahontas. Natives on land that the invading military want. One of their own sides with the natives.
Pocahontas 2: This time In space. And it's a dude.

I've seen all the trailers - and was their for Avatar day...I never understood the skepticism that people were/are having. The 15mins of footage shown in 3D IMAX was without a doubt amazing but even in regular 2D the film looks sweet...
Granted the plot/story isn't as unique as Cameron and the marketing machine have admitted to - but that definitely isn't making me any less excited for this release.

I've seen all the trailers... I was there on Avatar Day... and I could NOT be less interested...
It's become clearer and clearer that this movie will be a super bloated eco-drama - 3 hours to tell us this story of the evil human race stealing the land of an alien race - while our hero realizes the error of his ways and fights back with the aliens...
Give me a break.. the 3D CGI is only slightly better than Angelina Jolie in Beuwolf - the dialogue is as hammy (if not worse) than Phantom Menace... If this wasn't Cameron's first flick since Titanic - it would be super flop...
Of course there will be a few cool action sequences - but for $300 Million there better be...

wait, you've seen all the trailers, went to avatar day (which would have required patience and persistence on your part, i know- i was there too), and are taking the time to write a comment despite the fact that you "could NOT be less interested"?
Ironic, much?

Your judging 3 hours of dialog on 3 mins of a trailer? It's Cameron man, alot of his dialog is hammy as hell. We are talking about the guy who wrote "I'll be back", "I'm the king of the world", "Don't cry baby. Knew this was one way ticket, but you know I had to come. Love you wife." and "Get away from her you bitch!". Don't act like he is Shakespeare because he is far far from it. That saying the film looks great.

Sorry, but the new trailer sucks about as bad as the first one. I now have zero interest in seeing this thing.

I've seen everything covered in this movie before...Granted not all at once, but I'm still not interested. Didn't like the first Terminator, didn't like True Lies, didn't like Titanic....So I'm not a big Cameron fan to begin with. I won't be seeing this movie, as the last big hyped sci-fi movie(District 9) left me horribly unsatisfied considering the hype around it.

Mike and the rest of you haters - if you guys dislike Cameron so much and have no interest in seeing Avatar, why in the hell are you even checking out the trailer, reading the articles and commenting...you seem confused

Yawn....nothing new here, seen it all before, seen the same story several times before as well. It looks WAAAAAy too cartoonish (no fear factor in here at all). Remember the pre-release hoopla for Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut"? Like Townshend said, "we won't get fooled again!" That said, It looks like a definite rental. PS better luck on your next film Mr. Cameron.

Until now, I hadn't thought much of this movie. The trailer has me interested, though. Sure, the plot is likely simple, the message may be heavy-handed (I hope not, on both counts), and the dialogue sounds uninspired (so far). We've only seen 1/60th of the movie, so all of those could be unfounded. But, when he's firing on all cylinders (or even most), Cameron can make one heck of a blockbuster. Count me in.

Lion-O, Cheetara and Panthro all look great, but until I won't be able to make a final judgement on how the film looks until I see what Snarf looks like.

But Eyes Wide Shut was an incredible film, despite an awful marketing campaign that wasn't true to the movie. And yes, Cameron writes corny dialogue, but he ALWAYS has, and some of it is GREAT corny (like "I'll be back" followed by a car smashing through the front of a police station).
And if you look at Cameron's amazing filmography listed in this trailer and you're NOT moved, then don't buy a ticket.
Yes, I'm worried that it looks a bit cartoony on my small screen, but I'm confident that if James Cameron says he's been developing the most advanced 3d camera system the world has ever known for over ten years...and it looks this great now...it's going to deliver when seen in 3d!
