Shelf Life: Monsters, Inc.

On November 10, 2009, Walt Disney Home Entertainment is releasing a 4-disc Blu-ray set for Monsters, Inc., Pete Docter's feature directorial debut. Much like Finding Nemo set the stage for what Andrew Stanton eventually did on Wall-E, the 2001 Pixar film offers a glimpse of what was yet to come from Docter – who went on to direct this summer's Up, also out next week – but it also reiterates some of the themes that run throughout all of the studio's best work, including the concept of an alternate perspective on a place or idea that seems obvious, and the idea of families that are both familiar and unconventional. But how effectively does it examine and explore those things, particularly in light of what the studio has done since?
Suffice it to say that the Blu-ray set offers not only the best presentation of the film imaginable, but a bounty of extra content that expands the film's universe in new and interesting ways. As for the movie itself?
The Facts: Released in November of 2001, Monsters, Inc. was the fourth feature film released by Pixar after Toy Story, A Bug's Life, and Toy Story 2, and it positioned the studio as a creative force to be reckoned with: in addition to grossing some $525 million dollars worldwide, it earned four Academy Award nominations, winning one for Best Original Song, and went on to receive recognition from the Saturn Awards, BAFTA, the Broadcast Film Critics Association, and the Online Film Critics Society. It currently enjoys a 95 percent fresh Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
What Still Works: It's almost shocking how well Pixar manages to find the sweet spot between sentimentality and melodrama, but Monsters, Inc. may be one of the greatest examples in their filmography of that balance: from the moment that Boo appears in the film, she radically transforms the emotional pitch of the film, giving everything Sully (John Goodman) and Mike (Billy Crystal) do an emotional tether, even when it's mainly visceral or comedic. There's an amazing connection that exists not only between the characters themselves, but the characters and the audience, such that we understand, identify and are deeply moved by every development.
Remarkably, Pixar is able to come up with stories that don't merely reach out commercially to all different age groups, but genuinely connect with them, whether you're a thrill-seeking kid or the parent who's sitting next to him or her in the theater. The idea that you can even be a parent or a kid while you're watching these movies, no matter which you actually are, is just mind-blowing, and Monsters, Inc. indulges the fun and adventure that younger audiences want while finding behavior, themes and ideas that resonate really powerfully with older ones.
What Doesn't Work: Surprisingly, even at 93 minutes, I felt like the opening scenes dragged a little bit, and a lot of the introductory jokes about the word seemed obvious and even a little hokey. Like I said above, once Boo is introduced the movie takes off and becomes just completely and inescapably compelling, but during the earliest scenes Monsters, Inc. feels fairly conventional, reminiscent of the way A Bug's Life never managed to capture the sort of spark that other films had, and which this film ignited into a string of major-league successes (both commercial and artistic).What's The Verdict: While the majority of Monsters, Inc. is exactly as entertaining, funny, moving and resonant as it ever was, I'm surprised to report that there are a few parts whose luster has slightly worn off. That said, the movie is really wonderful – despite my best efforts to keep from getting too sentimental while watching it, I cried uncontrollably more than a few times – and it provides more than enough groundwork for Docter's later achievements, not to mention the studio's.

A lot of my friends consider Monsters Inc, along with A Bug's Life, to be Pixar's worst films. Monsters Inc actually is my favorite of all their films.
In addition to what you wrote, I'd like to point out that Boo has an arc. Think about that: she's a toddler, a little force of nature that didn't really need an arc, and yet Pixar decided to give her one. I love that. I love that she wasn't treated solely as a potential person, something to be carried to and fro, but as an actual person.

Surprisingly, I've watched this move (again) twice in the past week. (We had kids visit for Halloween and this was a kid friendly monster movie choice.) In my opinion, it's just as good today as it was back then.
I disgree that the intro scenes are slow. I liked the pacing of the movie as a whole. The action is good, nothing seems out of place, even 8 years later, and the animation is great. The characters are great and they do a great job making you care for them. When Mike rebuilds Boo's door and Sully goes in, I still get happy chills. And I've seen this movie 10 times.
The only thing I didn't really care for was the Mike's New Car short. It was only sorta funny once. (Yes, that's not even part of the movie, so it's a stretch.)

I went to one of the awesome animation panels at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater last year and Pete Docter showed the "Kitty has to say good-bye now" clip aka Pavlov's Pixar. Show clip, make Kate sob like a kid with a skinned knee.

I think that the way they embody the energy-crisis theme and play with the idea of "monster" in this film is so entertaining - and with all that cleverness and fun, they still manage to tie in genuine feeling that doesn't cloy. A favorite, for sure ... but I have a soft spot for monsters.

That final scene, where Sully opens the door and looks into Boo's room, was a turning point for Pixar I think. The subtlest of subtle animation in Sully's face combined with the audio only presence of Boo was so powerful. It was clearly a sign of what was to come - finally revealed this year in Up, which is a masterpiece.

I just got goosebumps when you talked about the final scene. Such a precious moment. Docter touches my emotional core, that is for sure.
As for the film overall, this is easily one of my favorite Pixar films. That, and The Incredibles. To this day, any time I am setting up a TV, sound system, or whatever, I use Monsters Inc. to get everything right. Usually, I just let the film go once everything is set up. I probably watched it 8-9 times within the past 3 months after moving back from college.
