Hello, My Name is Scott and I Love the 'G.I. Joe' Blu-ray
Filed under: DVD Reviews, Home Entertainment
Back in August was when G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra hit the screens, and while I had no reason to expect anything but a merciless brain-pummeling from the experience, I walked out suitably impressed with the flick's popcorn-tastic mentality. I even ended my review with this: "Truth be told, the flick's action centerpiece, a crazy chase through Paris, will soon be on heavy blu-ray rotation around my house." Yes, the director who slapped me with The Mummy Returns and pummeled me with Van Helsing is now back in my good graces. (The awesomely amusing Deep Rising is always the tie-breaker for Stephen Sommers.)You can enjoy my wonderfully insightful G.I. Joe review right here if you like, but this time out I just want to focus on the blu-ness and not the wackness: If you liked the flick, you want to own it on Blu-ray, trust me on that one. The supplemental features are basic but well-produced: there's an audio commentary with Sommers and producer Bob Ducsay that shows a good deal of enthusiasm and preparation on their part, plus on disc 2 you'll find a pair of rather slick and thorough featurettes: the 30-minute The Big Bang Theory is the "catch-all" behind-the-scenes piece that covers a lot of bases, and Next-Gen Action (about 20 minutes) focuses more intently on the special effects and production design.
And those goodies are all fine and good, but really -- the audio-visual lunacy is what this Blu is all about. The flick is undeniably slick-looking and full of nifty gizmos (to say nothing of colorful characters), but it's the eclectic mixture of locations and the powerfully energetic action scenes that deliver the most bang for your DVD buck. The underwater stuff in Act III is particularly pretty, as are the ice-cap sequences, but like I said a few months back: It's the outlandish chase through Paris that still works best for me. And frankly the Blu-ray looks even better than the theatrical print. Well ... maybe not, but it's close.

I really wanted to like GI Joe, but I just could not take the way it was edited together. Everything was so quickly cut together, they didn't allow anything to stand still for one second. It felt like it was directed by George Lucas. You could of put his name at the end of the movie and I would not of blinked twice.

"Everything was so quickly cut together, they didn't allow anything to stand still for one second" and "It felt like it was directed by George Lucas" are kind of opposing statements, aren't they? For all his faults, Lucas does not go in for quick-cutting: His movies are, if nothing else, clear and easy to follow.
Somers and Lucas both like to put a ton of stuff on the screen, and Somers isn't as good at it as Lucas is (the crazy assault at the end is not nearly up to "Star Wars" standards), but neither of them are Michael Bay types.

Yeah, I guess you're right. Just felt like a George Lucas movie to me. Didn't let the characters breath at all.

I kind of get the feeling Sommers would take that as a compliment, at least in general (and, truth be told, the average spectacle-oriented filmmaker could do a lot worse than follow Lucas's example). I didn't like the movie as much as Scott, and think it could have been greatly improved by replacing Channing Tatum and Marlon Wayans with, say, ANYBODY, but it's one I feel drawn to defend because even though it's never quite as good as it should be, it does a lot more well than people give it credit for.

I rented this movie the other day and man was it bad! It was more cartoony than the actual cartoon, although it would've made a great 80's action flick.

I also was disappointed with Cobra Commander. Levitt is a good actor, bit he just seemed too young to play him. When he showed Duke what he looked like under-neither, oh God, looked like a baby faced Freddy Kruger. And once he did become Cobra Commander, he was only in it for like 3 minutes. That's the main reason for me seeing the movie and it lasted so shortly.
I like Levitt though, hopefully they can improve Cobra Commander in the sequel.
