Kristen Stewart Goes Southern in 'The Yellow Handkerchief'

She's about to open the second-biggest film of her career, so what better timing than now to point you to a new peek at Kristen Stewart's next non-Twilight film? Check out the new trailer for The Yellow Handkerchief, a Sundance entry that follows three strangers in post-Katrina Louisiana – Martine (Stewart), Gordy (Eddie Redmayne), and Brett (William Hurt) -- as they search together for life, love, and the perfect Southern accent.
Ok, so it seems the Southern slangin' is done primarily by Stewart, while Brit Redmayne goes American and Hurt rocks the ex-con handlebar mustache. As they embark on a road trip together, the two teens listen to Brett's tale of the woman who got away (Maria Bello) while they navigate the murky waters of young love. (Read Erik Davis's Sundance review here.)
Watch the trailer after the jump.
After months without a distributor, The Yellow Handkerchief was picked up by Samuel Goldwyn films during the summer and will hit theaters February 10, 2010 – just in time for Valentine's Day! The date puts The Yellow Handkerchief smack dab in the middle of a busy few weekends for lovers, where it will have to compete with the hunky Channing Tatum's Dear John, Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor's I Love You, Phillip Morris, the ensemble rom-com Valentine's Day, and my most anticipated V-Day release, The Wolfman.
Crowded release date aside, at least The Yellow Handkerchief is getting a theatrical release, unlike many other indie films featuring Twilight stars that can hope for a DVD bow at best. It's also timed perfectly to fill a gap between this month's The Twilight Saga: New Moon and the next vampy installment, Eclipse, so I'm guessing The Yellow Hankie will do just fine.
Watch the trailer and tell us what you think: does Stewart's accent convince? Will it be another lip-biting, hair-tugging performance for the Twilight star? Will you buy a ticket on opening day?

Ummm....I'm from the south, and her accent sounded like an L.A. girl doing a southern accent. No did not convince. Accents aren't just about vowel sounds..they are also about rhythm and pitch.

I feel like all of Kristen's performances are the same....yet I still go back and watch them over and over again and look forward to more. Just from these snippets, it looks like she'll still give the same ole performance, but hey, if it works, it works. I think her accent is a little strong...i'm from south georgia, so i can judge. I won't see it on opening night, but i'm sure I'll see it. I loved Adventureland, so I'm sure she'll be great.

I'm from the south, too, and I thought she did fairly well on the accent. But she could've been a little more convincing.I live in the Appalachian Moutains,Avery County to be exact, and we talk fairly normal. But,yes,we still do use our "country slang" all the time.So...could you make Southerns more convincing?I also agree, her accent was strong in some parts.
