Roman Polanski Likely to Be Released on Bail
Filed under: RumorMonger, Celebrities and Controversy
A Swiss court has granted Roman Polanski bail in the amount of $4.5 million, according to the Associated Press (by way of Variety). The filmmaker, arrested in September for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977, is to be "kept under house arrest and electronic monitoring at his Swiss chalet."However, the appeal must still make it through Switzerland's supreme court before he is released. That decision should not affect the ongoing discussion by the Swiss government on whether or not Polanski should be extradited to the U.S., where he had been originally indicted on six counts and was facing a life sentence before he fled the country and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
His latest project, a Pierce Brosnan-Ewan McGregor thriller called The Ghost, remains in post-production, though the BBC suggests that Polanski is instructing his colleagues from jail to finish the film as intended in time for next February's Berlin Film Festival.

It wasn't sex, it was rape. Sex makes it sound like it was consensual when it was not.

Actually, it was consentual, she was just 14, and the law says girls that young aren't capable of making those decisions. I happen to agree with the law, but I also know that it happened just after his wife and unborn child were brutally murdered by the Manson Family; his head was really messed up and he needed therapy, not jail.

So we should forgive his crime because he went through some horrible shit? Should we then forego punishment for every criminal who's had it rough? Yes, Polanski had his wife and child murdered. Yes, his parents were in the Holocaust. Yes, he had a less than desirable childhood. And yes, he's made award-worthy films. Does this excuse him from raping a 13 year old girl? NO.
Also, read the transcripts: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/polanskicover1.html
The girl did not consent.

He DRUGGED and RAPED a 13 year old girl. How is that in any way "consensual"? And his family being murdered is no excuse for what he did. He raped a young girl, his ass belongs in the very capable hands of his fellow inmates in jail.

Last time I checked it was a few years after his wife and child was killed, enough time to get his shit together and think straight. And it was not consensual, she said no, and he drugged her.
One mistake in the article though, he was not facing a life sentence for the crime, that's incorrect. At most he may have gotten a two year sentence.

The girl was 13 at the time. No matter what she or Polanski may have said, someone under the age of consent is not capable of giving consent - the age of consent was (and still is) 18 in California.
Polanski is a criminal and should serve his time like other criminals.

It was clearly rape, as opposed to sex. If you read the victim's testimony there is no doubt that he raped her.
