UPDATED: Paul Greengrass Quits 'Bourne 4'

Everyone and their grandmothers seems to want a fourth Bourne film, and the question of "When, when, when?!" has dogged Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass for a long time. Shockingly, the answer may now be "never," as The Playlist is reporting that Greengrass has quit Bourne 4. Script problems and a fractious relationship with Universal are said to be the cause of the split.
Two scripts have been penned for the film, and reportedly no one is fond of George Nolfi's take. Josh Zetumer came aboard to write a new one, a decision that irked Greengrass as he wasn't consulted as to the choice of writer. But that's a relatively minor point, as the real problem seems to be Greengrass' free-wheeling style, which has cost Universal millions and millions on every film he's made. While Bourne turned a fine profit, the studio is concerned about Green Zone, which is now estimated to have cost $150 million due to all of Greengrass' famous tinkering. This is a film that doesn't carry the Bourne brand name, and deals with the very un-blockbuster topic of Iraq.
So, Greengrass and Universal have been butting heads, as he wants to continue his usual approach on Bourne 4, and they want him to keep the budget under control. Thus, he's upset at the way he's been treated, and has now walked away. Rumors swirl that he might return, but there's just as much feeling that the studio could hire a new director. This leaves everyone uncertain as to whether Damon would return since he's been famously loyal to Greengrass. For now, everyone is watching the trades to see what'll be announced (and with Damon doing Invictus press, maybe it'll come up unofficially), and hoping for the best. The last thing anyone wants is Bourne without the guys that made it great.
UPDATED: Head after the jump for a statement from Paul Greengrass
Greengrass on the Bourne decision: "You won't find a more devoted supporter of the Bourne franchise than me. I will always be grateful to have been the caretaker to Jason Bourne over the course of The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. I'm very proud of those films and feel they express everything I most passionately believe about the possibility of making quality movies in the mainstream. My decision to not return a third time as director is simply about feeling the call for a different challenge. There's been no disagreement with Universal Pictures. The opportunity to work with the Bourne family again is a difficult thing to pass up, but we have discussed this together and they have been incredibly understanding and supportive. I've been lucky enough to have made four films for Universal, and our relationship continues. Jason Bourne existed before me and will continue, and I hope to remain involved in some capacity as the series moves on."

Didn't the Bourne series wrap up all the loose ends with the last film? Or is this movie just a lot of ass-kicking?

The Bourne Ultimatum was one of the best films 2007. In fact this is one of the only trilogy's in recent memory that did not disappoint each installment was better then the last. If they want to do a 4th one I am all for it.

If Universal wanted to put their foot down about budget they should have done it on Green Zone instead of waiting until Bourne 4, which is a surefire hit. They may be able to churn out a decent Bourne movie with someone other than Greengrass (Liman did a pretty good job with the original), but why mess with success?
And without Damon there is no Bourne, as far as I'm concerned.

I agree with Mike. If they wanted to control spending Green Zone would have been the one to do it on. But then again at what point is enough - enough. Seems Green Zone pushed the limit. However, if they are concerned about over spending on Green Zone and possibly not getting their money back Bourne 4 could help curb those losses!
But Bourne 4 withouth Greengrass. Could be OK. My concern is - why? Ok I loved these movies. But the series is near perfect! Why even mess it up? Ok fine, If they do it right I am all in but so many times it seems they just milk and milk and milk the cow and WE don't get anything but spoiled milk in return but they get all our $$$.
On the fence!

As a fan of the (first two, haven't read the third) books, there were a lot of plot points that were left out of the original trilogies, that could be reworked to fit with this continuity's structure - like the whole China thing in the second book. But, honestly, I'm happy with them not continuing the series.
Then again, I'm also the lone person that really feels like the ending to the The Dark Knight, is a perfect place to leave that series until it's eventually rebooted. And I'm totally looking forward to The Green Zone.

I think almost everyone can agree that no Damon should mean no Bourne, period.
The thing is -- usually sequels are really, really, hard to do right. And Greengrass did it right, twice. If I put my faith in anybody to do the fourth Bourne correctly, it would be the guy who did two sequels correctly already. Much as I love the Bourne movies, I would rather see the fourth done right than in the hands of another director that wouldn't be able to.
Maybe they should focus on another globetrotting action adventure of awesomeness if they can't get this together -- because maybe the reason people want to see more Bourne is because they need more movies like it.

If it means no more shaky-cam, I'm all for Bourne 4 with Damon without Greengrass.

Good. The only watchable one was the first film. The second and third were typical idiotic Bay-like monkey-cam poop.

I have to say, I agree with the anti-Greengrass votes. I would have enjoyed Bourne 2 & 3 a lot more if only the camerawork didn't make me feel seasick. Get someone to direct that isn't afraid of a steadycam!

This is not such a total disaster...the Bond franchise went on after Connery walked even thou it wasn't as good again until Bronsnan. Also I thought Limon did a better job of directing, did not like the overdone shaky camera and had a greater intelligence to it. If Damon bails they should get Chris Pine to do Bourne., he'd make a great Bourne, intelligent, intense, younger, taller and tougher the way I see it. Since the new Star Trek likely will not be seen before 2012 he could probably be convinced. Seriously, they should go for it!

THANK YOU to those others out there who are sick of Greengrass' shaky-cam BS. I'm sorry, I don't give a rats ass about his pot-inspired idea that people will feel closer to the action. Sorry, I don't get how watching Bourne sitting at some restaurant table reading the menu through the eyes of somebody that apparently has ADHD is supposed to make me feel closer to any kind of action. Did all the shit camera work in the Blair Witch Project make anyone feel closer to the witch? LOL
IMO, the first Bourne movie far surpassed the other two on the camera work alone. Maybe without Greengrass we can actually get back to camera work that actually allows to you witness something happen instead of "experience it".
