Kevin Smith's 'Cop Out' Gets a Trailer

Kevin Smith's Cop Out (formerly A Couple of Dicks) has its first trailer online at Apple -- and if you knew absolutely nothing about it, you might find it only mildly amusing. Don't get me wrong, it's funny! But other than a few scenes of wit and a few glimpses of guns, there's nothing that would suggest that it's throwback to the 1980s, or this generation's Road House. It's really cut to look like Generic Cop Comedy, heavy on the Tracy Morgan shenanigans, low on plot, and free of any Kevin Smith. Smith's name isn't even on the trailer, which I suppose isn't too surprising (I mean, Iron Man doesn't exactly slap JON FAVREAU on its trailers either), but it suggests the studio doesn't want to alienate those who associate Smith with dick jokes and controversy.
Still, there's glimpses of truly funny stuff here. I love the "I was in the moment!" scene, and Bruce Willis' creepy laugh at Seann William Scott's cries of "Police brutality!" proves he's right in his element. I've always loved Willis' comedic talent, so even if this really isn't the next Road House (and come on, maybe it won't be), I'd love to see him return to that John McClane charm. It feels like it's been forever since he really, really got to use it.
Watch the trailer on Apple (we'll get an embed one of these days), and come back to talk about it.

I have 3 alternate comments, choose the one you like best I imagine they will be repeated.
Arent trailers supposed to have all the best parts of a movie?
Arent trailers supposed to make me want to see a movie?
I did not even chuckle once.

I think they avoided using the Kevin Smith brand because his movies haven't been funny since Clerks.

Having trouble coming up with the proper words to describe how lame and unfunny that was.

Not at all impressed. I really find Traci Morgan totally annoying. He's good on 30 Rock.....his weird way of talking/comedy works there. It does NOT work in this trailer at all.

Bad trailer. Really bad trailer. Tracey Morgan is the star? He's too polarizing -- and even if you like him, there's too much of him in this trailer.
And the "parody set-up" is such a lame trailer-open cliche, even lamer here for being mis-applied: this movie is retro, not parody.
This trailer makes me think of dumb unfunny buddy comedies like 2004's "Taxi" when it should be making me think of Lethal Weapon -- unless they *don't* want people to see it...
Oh well. At least now if the movie fails, Kevin Smith can blame bad marketing.

Hmm. I don't really know what to think. There were a few promising bits of comedy, like handcuffing SWS to the bumper, but overall the trailer just had a stock feel to it. It seems like every new buddy cop movie claims to be "not your average buddy cop movie", when in actuality that's exactly what it is.
A February release date is never usually a vote of confidence, either. Maybe they're just holding the best bits out of the trailer for once, but they could've included something more to whet your appetite.

Let's at least for a second, think that maybe Smith and co. don't have much word into what goes into the trailer, and even if it doesn't put it's best foot forward...I can't believe that with him and Bruce Willis in a buddy-cop movie, they wouldn't even make a really valiant attempt at making the next throwback to the 80s type flick. Remember that it is R-rated, in any case...but they've gotta draw people in with what they can...it's advertising! The talent behind this, (I still love Smith, and aside from Willis being one of my favorites, I think Tracy Morgan is pretty hilarious--at least on 30 Rock) plus the fact that it was on the Black List last year is more than enough for me to give them the benefit of the doubt, at least for awhile longer. I'm going to withold judgement until a red-band trailer, because the idea of a Roadhouse for my generation is honestly just too freaking awesome for me to give up on yet.
As an afterthought, I am still pretty bummed about the loss of A Couple Of Dicks, but as it is, Cop Out is a clever substitute for those of us who pay attention--and let's be honest, those people will be the ones who will most likely enjoy this movie most.

The Cop Out trailer was shown before a full audience showing of Sherlock Holmes and not a single person laughed once. I like Kevin Smith and Bruce Willis, so I want the movie to be a hit, but based on the audience reaction to that trailer, this could be a huge flop.
