The 82nd Academy Award Nominations!
Filed under: Awards, Newsstand, Oscar Watch

Some people wait all year for Christmas morning. Others start prepping their Halloween costumes on November 1st. But movie nerds, industry insiders, journalists, and anyone who likes to sound smart at dinner parties think Oscar season is the most magical time of the year. And today, at 5:38 AM Pacific, Anne Hathaway and AMPAS prez Tom Sherak are announcing the nominations for this year's Academy Awards. Seems a particularly cruel time to pick since Hollywood will be sleeping (or still awake from the night before, perhaps), but such is life. The envelope, please...

Damnit, I just realized my snafu...I must have been reading another category at the time of posting. Looks like it did get a nomination for BP.
My bad!

I thought Quentin Tarantino couldn't get nominated for best screenplay, since he's not a WGA member? Not complaining of course. Very well-deserved nomination.

I thought Quentin Tarantino couldn't be nominated for Best Original Screenplay because his movie was a REMAKE.

Plus, I liked The Dirty Dozen better when it was called that.

Pfft- if you actually saw both films you wouldn't open your mouth...

How is Inglorious Basterds a remake of The Dirty Dozen? Is it because they recruited the Basterds from prison? Oh wait they didn't do that. Is it because the only purpose of the Basterds was to infiltrate a party to disrupt the Wehrmacht right before an invasion? Oh wait that wasn't their mission, their only mission was to kill any Nazi's they could. The infiltration of the "party" came later. Just because a movie is inspired by another film, albeit heavily inspired, doesn't mean it's not it's own film. Get all of your facts straight before you start throwing your douche baggery comments around

That was only for the WGA noms. It doesn't apply to the Academy Awards.

I'm SHOCKED to see The Blind Side (which I loved, by the way) on best picture, but almost as shocked, definitely EXTREMELY excited about District 9 getting a nomination! That's AWESOME. Definitely a few other surprises...this show might actually turn out to be interesting.

I don't know why they even bothered nominating 10 films when there are really only 5 that even have a remote chance of winning. It seems gratuitous for the sake of pleasing the fans.

What better way to boost viewership than to give people hope that their favorite movie has a chance to win best picture.

Gotta agree. The five that wouldn't have been there otherwise (in my opinion: The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, A Serious Man, and Up) will not get past the nominations, despite being good movies, because they are up against the more obvious "Oscar" movies.
It really is just to give a little extra recognition to those other movies, and like you said, to please fans (like me, who was pumped to see District 9 up there, even if I know it has no chance)

My hate for Avatar's derivativeness aside - that POS score got a nomination? That was the most generic music that has ever graced a feature film.
No love for Trek's music? Effing stupid.
Looks like I won't be tunning in this year. Avatar for the win(everything - including categories its not nominated for).

I'm surprised! Aside for 'The Blind Side (seriously, wth?), this was the most predictable year of nominations. Very nice! :) (Excellent job predicting everything too, Cinematical.)

What the hell is "A Serious Man" doing ANYWHERE in this line up??
The only thing "serious" about it is that it seriously sucked b@lls!
Also - I have my fingers crossed for Hurt Locker (Great flick!)
