Writer Says 'Saw VII' Will Mark the End of the Franchise
Filed under: Horror, Newsstand, Remakes and Sequels

Just when we started to get used to what could become a really fun Halloween box office to-the-death match-up between the Saw franchise and the up-and-coming Paranormal Activity franchise comes word that in all probability Saw VII will mark the final installment in the franchise. Speaking to a UK radio show, Saw IV, V, VI and VII co-writer Patrick Melton revealed that while the plan was to continue making Saw films until at least part eight, the lackluster box office showing for Saw VI has pretty much put the nail in this franchise's coffin.
Melton says (via Latino Review), "I think it's going to end with Saw VII. I have a very strong feeling its going to end with Saw VII. That's something we're debating now. You saw in previous interviews or discussions where we thought Saw VIII would be the last one where we had the first trilogy and the second trilogy and then sort of a grand finale wrapped up in two films. But frankly because Saw VI hasn't performed as well as we anticipated, the idea is well why make two movies when we can make one really excellent movie that wraps up as best we can? And it's going to be in 3-D which sort of adds to the spectacle. So if you had to ask me, I don't own the franchise, nor do I run the studio, but I have a feeling, a strong feeling that it's going to be Saw VII which will be also known as Endgame. And nothing's official yet, but that's where we're hoping things will go."
As far as an entire franchise reboot goes (because you know that's at least being considered), Melton claims he's never heard of such talk, saying "maybe ten years from now", adding "At this point everyone is very focused on making Saw VII and seeing if we can make this sort of the grand finale."
What do you think? Would you be happy with this franchise ending this October, or are you down with more sequels?

I actually kind of like seeing a new SAW movie each year, despite the series' fluctuating quality.
I was just hoping that it would never end, which would amuse me immensely. I assumed that by the time it hit #20, the killer would be a monkey with a robot brain.
That's something I would absolutely see opening weekend.

I absolutely feel the same way. I'm actually going to be pretty disappointed if they quit making them.

For me, Saw II marked the end of the franchise.

Just like Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday was the final movie in the franchise and Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare was the final movie in that franchise. What they really mean is that it will be the final movie in the franchise unless they can think up another way to milk more money out of the franchise.

well, by advertising it as the final movie they are building more hype for the movie which will cause more people to see it which will cause it to make more money which will give them reason to make another movie. They know exactly what they are doing.

Was bound to happen sooner or later, and it's probably for the best. A continuity heavy franchise like this should only really go on for so long. I actually wish it would've ended on VI, on account of that being an excellent movie (best since II, really) that tied up just about all the loose ends in a satisfying way. But, I guess one more (from the same guy as VI, if memory serves) couldn't hurt too much...
Then it sits around for a couple years, and is either rebooted or sequeled into space.

When I saw the picture, I thought it was an older Eminem from 8 Mile.

honestly i am a big fan of the saw franchise. But its time it ends. If they really wanted to keep it going long term, they should have done it every 2 years as opposed to every year. Killing jigsaw off so early in the franchise is really what screwed up this franchise and on top of that they made his wife lose the baby. they cant even use an angle where he left stuff for the child to learn and the child continues the legacy. UNLESSSSSSSS they go with he froze some sperm for her etc... but thats kind really reaching.

Well, I've loved the franchise from the beginning, and I've found it's best to keep it's head before it's run into the ground. As much as I'd love to see a Saw VIII next year, I believe that one more movie after the double trilogy is a good way to go. The only thing disappointing me is the fact it's only ending here for lower box office intakes... (Saw VI made just over $50 million less than all the others)
