'Wall Street 2' Gets Bumped to the Fall
Filed under: Drama, Distribution, Exhibition, Remakes and Sequels
Gordon Gekko's release from prison has been delayed. He was all set to hit the bright lights of Manhattan once again on April 23, showing the young Shia LaBeouf a thing or two about greed and piles of pretty cash. But The Hollywood Reporter posts that the film will no longer be released next month, or even over the summer for that matter. Fox is bumping the Wall Street sequel until the fall -- September 24, to be exact. What's prompted the studio to push Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps five months? Personally, I wonder if they're hoping to give the film a flashy TIFF premiere and use it as a kick off to awards season -- making it a film relatively fresh on voters' minds when the Academy starts looking towards next year's Oscars. Pretty much all the big films that hit screens in September and October get screened during the Toronto festival these days (or Venice), and I can't see an Oliver Stone film not hitting one of the fest's ritzy gala openings.
Does this bode well for the film? Think what you will about Shia LaBeouf (who, I must say, offered a surprising performance in New York, I Love You), but this puppy has got a lot of star power extending beyond the questionable star. There is, of course, Michael Douglas, but also Frank Langella, Susan Sarandon, and recent Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan. If the trailer and cast are any indication, we might just have a worthy sequel on our hands.

By the way, what is all the recent Shia LaBeouf hate? Is it because of the Transformers movies or is it because of the rampant hate directed toward 'Crystal Skull'? I'll admit I like 'Crystal Skull'--not 'Raiders' worthy, certainly--but are all the haters forgetting about 'Temple of Doom'? It wasn't exactly a masterpiece although it may seem like one in comparison to a lot of movies made now.

Regarding the Indy series: No Temple of Doom wasn't perfect, but still the film had the zest and energy of Classic Spielberg. The rope bridge, the mine car ride, Mola Ram's heart ripping, the spiked room and the opening with the diamond and antidote were all classic action scenes - that can compare to anything offered in the other films.
Crystal Skull was nothing more than a lazy rehash of Raiders & Last Crusade, only the chemistry and writing wasn't done as well as those earlier films. The film had too many characters, unexciting action sequences, too much CGI, lame humor and just half-assed Spielberg direction. It was an unnecessary film they waited too long to make.

The Shia hate is probably to do with how he came out of nowhere and was uniformly shit in all his movies. We were all wondering why Bay and Spielberg thought that this average-looking charisma black hole should be chosen to lead some pretty big pictures. I suppose in the cases of the Transformers flicks and Indiana, it didn't really matter: all the other aspects of those two movies are so woeful that Shia's crapitude barely even touched the sides. Terrible movies that weren't helped by their 'star'. And nothing wrong with Temple of Doom. Good, dark action and 1000 times better than Crystal Skull.
I'm so up for the Wall Street sequel, but he's the weak link that might fuck it up.

Oh, pleeease, 'Temple of Doom' was nowhere close to the best of Indiana Jones and opinion isn't fact.

When you mention "those two movies," you mean Transformers 2 and Crystal Skull right? Transformers 1 was nowhere near the trainwreck that Transformers 2 was and was one of the better mindless, popcorn flicks that've been released in recent years.
To the rest of your post, there's a good bit of Shia hate going around. He hasn't done anything Oscar worthy (yet) but he's certainly better than the Twilight werewolf, Zac Efron, etc.
Wall Street 2 looks like it's going to be pretty bad though.

I have a love/hate relationship with the very notion of a sequel to "Wall Street"... On one hand I love the idea of revisiting Gordon Gekko, one of the most fascinating and vivid characters in film history... On the other hand I fear that this sequel is poorly conceived and will ruin his legacy...
Does a delay really meant that they're hoping for awards consideration (and inclusion at Cannes and Toronto)? Why the relatively last-minute switch just over a month in advance of the opening? I certainly hope that it's not because of editing and story problems for which re-shoots will be necessary.

I agree, Anthony. I'm usually hesitant when filmmakers return to a franchise 10-20 years later. It usually results in disappointing installments. See: Indiana Jones 4, Godfather III, Terminator 3&4 and the Star Wars prequels for proof. However, there are exceptions - I thought Sylvester Stallone did a great job with Rocky Balboa and - if you dig mindless 80's-style action - Rambo 4 wasn't too bad.
I'm intrigued by the new Wall Street sequel though. In addition to Douglas returning, I like the supporting cast. Also, the recent economic crisis provides for a great backdrop to set Gordon Gekko's return into.

I agree, thanks. The Shia-hate has all the signs of just being typical backlash not based on anything stronger than personal opinions and people hating anything ubiquitous.

Yeah as a huge Wall Street fan from back in the day I can say the trailer has a real Basic Instinct 2 feeling to it. Shia is such a lightweight to go toe to toe with Gordon Gekko- real shame. This could have been juicy if they picked a co-star based on skill rather than demographics. It has all the trappings of Indiana Jones 4- and we all know how uniformly iffy that was.
