Venice's Competition Lineup Includes Sofia Coppola's 'Somewhere'

Filed under: Exhibition, Venice Film Festival

On the heels of the Toronto International Film Festival revealing the first round of their slate, the Venice Film Festival has announced their in-competition films, and a handful of features screening out of competition. The festival, which kicks off before TIFF (running September 1-11), has a number of repeats from the Toronto fest, including Black Swan, Barney's Version, Miral, and Norwegian Wood in competition, and The Town outside of competition.

The big coup for Venice -- and the film not listed on TIFF's initial release -- is Sofia Coppola's latest, Somewhere, which sees Stephen Dorff as a Hollywood actor who has to step up and take responsibility for his daughter (Elle Fanning). But there are some other notable productions as well, particularly Three (Tom Tykwer's film about a Berlin couple who -- separately -- fall in love with the same man), 13 Assassins (Takashi Miike's latest about assassins who embark on a suicide mission), and Vincent Gallo's Promises Written in Water. A head-to-toe Gallo production, it's shot in black and white and will hopefully remind us of the talents present in Buffalo 66.

And of course, I can't let you hit the jump for the full list without sharing the two notable out-of-competition picks: Joaquin Phoenix's I'm Still Here, and the grindhouse feature we've all been waiting for -- Machete.
