WHERE DO YOU WRITE FROM?
My office, aka my living room couch, facing the television, which is set to Turner Classic Movies.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO WRITE ABOUT MOVIES?
I originally went to school for film production, but I realized I wasn't cut out for collaborative arts. One day, after months of going broke on film stock and not being able to afford to go to the movies, I scrounged up enough cash to go see "12 Monkeys". And then I stuck around after the credits and watched it again. It was then that I realized I liked watching movies more than I liked making them, and I set out to find a job where I could see as many movies as possible. For the next eight years I worked in movie theaters, as everything from an usher to a manager of concessions operations, but I also tried out writing movie reviews for a zine called READ and a self-started cynical film site called LowExpectation.com. Soon I was also the most populous commenter on Cinematical, which eventually led to my joining the team.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE GENRE?
Sometimes it's dystopian sci-fi, and sometimes it's anarchic comedy, but currently it's documentary.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE MOVIES?
Un Chien Andalou, Duck Soup, The Fisher King, Heathers, 8 1/2, The Apartment, Shaun of the Dead, The Player, Life of Brian, The General (Keaton's), Breaking the Waves, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Badlands, Amelie, The Conversation, Blade Runner ...
WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE DIRECTORS?
Gilliam, Fellini, Wilder, Capra, Von Trier, Twkwer, Winterbottom, Godard, Jeunet ...
WHAT'S THE CRAZIEST COMMENT YOU'VE EVER GOTTEN?
I don't know it specifically, but after about two years writing for Cinematical, someone actually left me a nice comment. That person must have been totally insane.
WHAT ARE THE BEST PERKS OF THIS GIG?
When I Google my very common name, I'm actually personally listed on the first page of results. Hooray for narcissism! Oh, and of course I get to see movies for free.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT WRITING FOR CINEMATICAL?
Currently, I really like having a column in which I can share my love for cinemas and moviegoing, because both the industry and the pastime seem to be dying out and can use the attention and celebration. But it goes along with my general love of being able to discuss movies with real movie lovers.
