Summer Budget Travel Tips from Gadling

WHERE DO YOU WRITE FROM?

Austin, Texas

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO WRITE ABOUT MOVIES?

Harlan Ellison's "Watching" essays, which were scathing and witty and wonderful and introduced me to lots of new films, when I read them in high school as they appeared in "Fantasy and Science Fiction" magazine.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE GENRE?

Screwball/romantic comedies from the 1930s. They're smart and chaotic and hilarious and the women all wear the most fabulous hats.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE MOVIES?

The Wild Bunch. Some Like It Hot. The Palm Beach Story. Army of Darkness. Holiday. Clerks II. L'Atalante. Bringing Up Baby. Breaking Away. The Producers (1968).

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE DIRECTORS?

Billy Wilder, Sam Peckinpah, Preston Sturges, Terry Gilliam.

WHAT'S THE CRAZIEST COMMENT YOU'VE EVER GOTTEN?

I wrote a Cinematical Seven about dysfunctional families in film [ http://www.cinematical.com/2005/11/23/cinematical-seven-happy-dysfunctional-family-holidays/ ], in which I referred to my own family as "charmingly dysfunctional." My mom actually showed up and posted a comment taking issue with that phrase as applied to our family. Having your mother comment on your blog entries is surreal.

WHAT ARE THE BEST PERKS OF THIS GIG?

Free movies, of course. The opportunity to see films I might not ordinarily watch like Daddy Day Camp and I Know Who Killed Me ... okay, good movies too, like Quiet City. And sometimes Erik Davis sends me videos of his latest greatest dance moves, although that can get a mite creepy at times.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT WRITING FOR CINEMATICAL?

The times I get to phone my little brother, transcribe his rants about Oscar picks or summer movies or whatever, then make the rest of you read his crazy predictions.

Meet the rest of the Cinematical team ...
