Townes Van Zandt Doc Getting Distribution

Filed under: Documentary, Music & Musicals, New Releases, Distribution

Be Here to Love Me tells the life story of legendary country/folk singer Townes Van Zandt. It is currently on the worldwide festival circuit and is getting broader theatrical distribution in the fall.  I was able to catch a screening of it at this year's LA Film Festival and was drawn in by its gentle pacing and eerie tone. The film takes us through the inner world of the cult singer as if floating through an almost surreal human tragedy. Dozens of interviews and rare footage help paint a multi-layered portrait rarely seen in music documentaries. If you can, see this thing.

John Moore Remakes "The Omen"

Filed under: Horror, 20th Century Fox

The Omen is being remade? Variety recently reported that John Moore is slated to direct what is now being called Omen 666, an updated version of the 1976 classic that starred Gregory Peck as the stubborn victim of a child-sized antichrist. That original pic was one of those rare pre-80's horror films that was so tastefully made it could hardly be compared to the gore-fests of the years to follow. The director has a difficult task ahead of him. I can't imagine the subtleties of Richard Donner's '76 epic being upheld by a director who is known for flubbing previous remake attempts ala Flight of the Phoenix. But then again, the concept of a remake seems antithetical most of the time. I'd be curious to hear your opinions on remakes. Which ones do you feel have been successful and worthwhile?

Popular DIY Star Wars Film in the Spotlight

Filed under: Independent, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Cinematical Indie

BBC News recently did a feature report on Revelations, the homemade Star Wars inspired film that gained its popularity over the Internet. Star Wars fanatic Shane Felix took 3 years to direct the 40-minute film, with help from over 200 others. Whether or not you are Star Wars fan, it is interesting to see just how far home production and editing software can enable the non-professional. This filmmaking team has succeeded in taking their love of a movie franchise to an extreme. Who wants to get in on a CGI sequel to Stripes with me?
