While we didn't spot too many people dressed in costume (except for a group doing a Batman theme), there were some very, very cool toys, games, statues, posters and movie props. Among the larger attractions was Nite Owl's ship from Watchmen (pictured below -- see inside by clicking through the gallery), a huge Iron Monger statue (in gallery), James Bond's hot set of wheels (in gallery), a ginormous Star Wars exhibit, with Star Wars: The Clone Wars statues alongside dudes in Storm Trooper attire (pictured above), as well as monitors displaying the new video game, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (which looks hella cool).

Check out a few images from Preview Night below, then definitely make sure to head on over to the gallery to see what this year's San Diego Con is all about.

P.S. Masters of the Web panel tomorrow morning, 10am. Be there! Say hello! The film wasn't supposed to have a major presence here at Con, so it's nice to at least see a poster for the flick, which hits theaters on May 1, 2009. We'll have a whole bunch of photos for you from Preview Night here at Con in just a little bit -- in the meantime, what do you think about this poster? Does it get you excited for the film? Starring Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber and Danny Huston, X-Men Origins: Wolverine will claw its way into theaters next summer.

For complete coverage of the 2008 San Diego International Comic Con, check out the official Cinematical Comic Con Hub.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Live from SDCC: Time to Get Our Con On!

Filed under: Festival Reports, Fandom, Images, ComicCon

Cinematical has officially arrived in beautiful, sunny San Diego! We somehow found a way to get our press badge before anyone else, and I'm here with our first 2008 San Diego Comic Con gallery -- featuring images of all the cool little goodies they gave me when I picked up my badge. Among the lot, there was an issue of Mad Magazine that tackles Botchmen (instead of Watchmen), trading cards, stuff on the new Batman LEGO video game and a massive events guide. They'll be letting us into the convention in just a few hours for preview night, so I'll slide in there and see if I can't bring back anything cool to show you. But before we get to the gallery, let me just say this: If you've never been to San Diego, get your ass over here because this town is gorgeous!

Last thing (and most importantly): Check out Cinematical's official Comic Con hub for all the latest and greatest from San Diego, as well as Moviefone's awesome Con hub. It just launched now and it's a little empty (and lonely), but we'll be filling her up soon enough.

Time to get our Con on fools! Per Aja's penchant for extravagant gross-outs, the picture is -- how do you say? -- aggressive. I'm putting it under the jump. It's gruesome -- watch out.

It's also -- and some of you may petition to have me committed for this -- strangely beautiful, albeit in a way only a horror freak could love. Unlike, say, the work of Eli Roth, who's like a giddy kid in a candy store when it comes to gore, Aja's imagery has been kind of artful in its grandiosity. Of the Splat Pack membership, I think he's the most concerned with the egghead aspects of horror movie aesthetics: shot composition, the color palette, symmetry, etc. That's a large part of the reason I'm looking forward to Mirrors, which otherwise looks pretty standard-issue. A truly great-looking horror film might be able to get away with not having much of a concept.

Anyway, Aja will be at Comic-Con promoting Mirrors, and I'm sure Scott, Eric or Elisabeth will have something for you from there. Meanwhile, click through for the photo -- if you dare. Not Safe for Work.
Continue reading See a Highly Unpleasant New Photo from 'Mirrors'

Permalink | Email this | Comments

SDCC Exclusive: 'Bitch Slap' Poster and Photos

Filed under: Action, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Movie Marketing, Images, ComicCon, Posters

Love it! Cinematical just received this poster and a whole slew of photos from the upcoming flick Bitch Slap, which will definitely have a presence at this week's San Diego Comic Con. Described as "a post-modern, thinking man's throwback to the "B" Movie/Exploitation films of the 1950's - 70's as well as a loving, sly parody of the same," Bitch Slap stars folks like Kevin Sorbo, Michael Hurst, Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor, as well as Julia Voth, America Olivo and Erin Cummings.

Bitch Slap was inspired by films like Dragstrip Girls, Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill and Kung Fu Nun, and a cool fun fact is that the very awesome Zoe Bell (Kill Bill 1 & 2, Grindhouse) did all the stunt work on the film. Check out the flick's official website for more information and a trailer, and definitely check out the totally rad photos in the gallery below with the synopsis after the jump. (Warning: Lots of cleavage in below gallery. Might be NSFW.) All three of the main girls will be at The Con along with the filmmakers, so we'll try to get you some more sweetness later this week.

Who's ready to get slapped?

Gallery: Bitch Slap

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Strange New Photos from 'Crank 2: High Voltage'

Filed under: Action, Lionsgate Films, Movie Marketing, Remakes and Sequels, Images

You know, I've seen a lot of 'behind the scenes' photographs over the years, but these latest from Crank 2: High Voltage win the "what the heck is going on here?" award, hands down. The LA Times is now hosting 19 new images from the set of the follow-up to the 2006 action film. In fact, I have to be honest with you: I can't for the life of me figure out why directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor would need a giant foam head of Jason Statham -- but now that it has my interest piqued, it had better be good.

This time around, our favorite hit man Chev Chelios (Statham) has to chase down a Chinese mobster who has stolen his nearly indestructible heart and replaced it with a bum ticker. But that's not all: on top of everything else, Chev has to keep his heart running on jolts of electricity (where's James Bond's dashboard defibrillator when you need it?). Joining in on the fun are Amy Smart (who we saw on set a few months ago in a 'questionable' costume), Dwight Yoakum, Bai Ling, and a cameo from '80s cautionary tale, Corey Haim (and for his sake I hope things went better on the set here than they did on Lost Boys 2).

Crank 2: High Voltage is expected arrive in theaters in 2009 -- maybe by then we'll know what all those big foam heads were about.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Carla Gugino -- 'Watchmen' Pinup

Having gotten the chance to visit the Watchmen set, I thought nothing could be cooler. But even though I saw a little of what was coming, nothing compared to the trailer that came with The Dark Knight, and the long-awaited appearance of Dr. Manhattan. But there wasn't a nibblet of Carla Gugino as Sally Jupiter.

But now I give you two doses. Above there is a pin-up that was sent to AICN by artist James Jean, who created the pin-up pic for the movie (see it full-length over there). Of course, this was back during her heydey, before her daughter took over and found herself some different superhero action. After the jump, you can check out a pic that Warners sent us late last week (along with other images). It's the interlude between Jupiter and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

You know, I remember going to see Spider-Man when it came out in theaters a handful of years ago, and being all excited, but that was like finding a dollar on the side of the road compared to the bag-full-o-cash fangirl excitement I have for this film.
Continue reading Carla Gugino -- 'Watchmen' Pinup

Permalink | Email this | Comments

New Image: Sam Jackson and Bernie Mac are 'Soul Men'

Filed under: Comedy, Music & Musicals, Movie Marketing, Images

I have an unfortunate knee-jerk reaction to the title Soul Men. Almost against my will, my mind is flung back to that 1986 C. Thomas Howell atrocity Soul Man, in which rich white kid Howell tried to pass himself off as black man to secure a scholarship. (Excuse me while I try to calm down the tremors shaking through my body.)

Happily for everybody, Malcolm D. Lee's Soul Men bears no relation to that earlier film. Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac star as two feuding back-up singers who reunite for a tribute concert. Jessica Barnes detailed the plot and gave us a look at the first picture from the production a few months ago, a back stage shot with Isaac Hayes, who is playing himself. Cinematical has received the great-looking image above, showing the Soul Men in performance.

Reportedly, Jackson and Mac are doing their own singing and, even though they're playing back-up singers, I'm hoping we get to hear them solo -- or duet. Jackson was mighty impressive as a blues guitar player and singer in Craig Brewer's Black Snake Moan, even if that movie is better remembered for Christina Ricci's naked display of her physical assets than Jackson's musical prowess. I can't remember Bernie Mac singing in any of his roles, but he's such a great stand-up presence that I can really see him excelling in this part.

Are you ready to watch Sam and Bernie as the new Soul Men when the film opens on November 14?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

'Watchmen' Panel-to-Screen Comparison

Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Mystery & Suspense, Warner Brothers, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Images

One of the most wonderful things about geekdom on the Internet is how fast it sets to work. The Watchmen trailer hasn't even been out for 24 hours, and already folks are analyzing its every second -- with one dedicated fan comparing its frames to the panels of the original book. The hardworking one is Brad Brevet over at Rope of Silicon, and he really has done a great job. If you decide to look, and are unfamiliar with the source material, beware of spoilers.

As he did with 300, Zack Snyder has really managed to bring the frames to life. His eye for this is uncanny. There are few comic book adaptations where one gets goosebumps, or jumps out of their seat and says "It looks just like the book!" Of course, Snyder has tweaked it -- he's changed the costumes, and he's given it his own style -- but it's still better than I ever thought it would be. Whether he brings the book to life is, of course, the million dollar question. I'm happy just being entertained by the possibility, though.

For me personally, the money shots were the funeral, Jon being ripped apart into particles, and Archie the Owlship. Even my sister, who loathed the book, is in love with the faithful rendering of Archie. The shot of it flying out of the water is actually enough to convince her to buy a ticket. (I'm not sure why, but let's just leave that up to her.) And surely if she can be sold on it, the rest of us can be too.

Watchmen opens March 6th, 2009.

UPDATE: Warners sent us over a whole new crop of Watchmen photos.
It looks like there will be some Star Trek in San Diego after all. Entertainment Weekly featured these four posters in their Comic Con preview, and at last, fans get a glimpse of the young characters populating this reboot. Zoe Saldana does make a lovely Uhura, Chris Pine is a I-guess-that's-Captain Kirk, but Zachary Quinto takes the lookalike cake as Spock. Very eerie! As for Eric Bana's Nero, well, I find myself disturbingly attracted to his tattoos.

These posters will be handed out next week at Comic Con, probably at the Paramount booth. Each character gets their own one-sheet, and when combined, form the logo. Expect hysteria from the hapless studio interns handing out the swag, people snagging ten Kirks and no Uhuras, Nero to be littering the gutters between here and the Gaslamp District, and Spock to be commanding ridiculous prices on Ebay. The swag grabs are never pretty.

[via Empire]

And it was amazing. Well, I thought so, anyway, and I'm one of the few people who said "ehh" after reading the graphic novel. Anyway, some of you bigger fans probably watched the new Watchmen trailer over and over and over again, forward and backward, in slow-motion and sped-up to compare the film with the panels in the book. But did you notice the odd lack of continuity in the sequence shown above? Unless you read MTV Movies Blog, or unless you were looking really hard for something like last year's 300 trailer surprise, there's a good chance you missed it.
It's been a tough year for documentaries at the box office. How do you market a critically-acclaimed film about five Indiana high school teens that just happens to be a doc?

The film is American Teen, and the hurrahs began at Sundance this year. James Rocchi described it as "an engaging, stylish and surprisingly smart piece of non-fiction entertainment." Paramount Vantage acquired distribution rights and then released a poster a couple of months later that intentionally reminded everyone of John Hughes' The Breakfast Club (note poster on the left, above).

The company changed tactics somewhat with their campaign inviting people to become "fans" of the real-life characters in the movie. You can see more about this at the film's official site. Filmmaker A. J. Schnack questioned the wisdom of selling documentary subjects as marketable commodities. A new poster took a different approach (see above, right), though the trailer is still selling the nostalgia element.

In the Los Angeles Times, Mark Olsen examines the marketing challenge in detail. Among other things, he quotes director Nanette Burstein as not wanting the Breakfast Club poster as anything more than a teaser. But Paramount Vantage exec Megan Colligan claims they are not "trying to hide the fact that it's a documentary ... One of the challenges of this movie is making people feel like this is a cinematic experience that will feel to them like a great teen comedy." American Teen opens in limited engagements on Friday, July 25.

The dress, however, excuses all sorts of Photoshop sins. You know how I love my lush costumes, and The Duchess promises to have loads of gorgeous, frothy items. (One of my favorite sites, The Costumer's Guide to Movie Costumes, has a whole page devoted to it already. I want that fox hunting outfit for my own, but I'm not sure what to do with it since I don't hunt foxes. Or ride horses.)

But that's the big question about the film, isn't it? Will the movie actually say something relevant about Georgiana Spencer, Duchess of Devonshire? She was quite the figure in her own time; as the official press release notes, she was a leader of the progressive Whig Party, and an active political campaigner in an era when women couldn't even vote. The comparisons to her descendant, Princess Diana, are apt -- but both women would probably agree that such remarks are a bit glib. The movie marketing, however, is trading on that fact very heavily. I remain excited, but historical dramas can only go one of two ways: wonderful or awful. There's no in-between.

The Duchess opens September 19th, 2008.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Gallery: 'The Dark Knight' Gotham City Premiere!

Filed under: Action, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Images

Above: View of masks at the after party for the world premiere of 'The Dark Knight' at the Mandarin Oriental ballroom on July 14, 2008 in New York City. -- Getty Images

Last night in Gotham, er, New York City, all the talk revolved around The Dark Knight premiere happening up near Lincoln Center on 68th street and Broadway. The stars were out, the crowds were insane and I watched most of it from my comfortable couch in Queens. For those who weren't able to attend, we've got a pretty kick ass gallery for you to check out below. In it, there's also some photos from the after party (like the one above), where they had the Batman costume and these masks on display -- and the bar featured Joker writing, while the Bat sign hung down from above. Very cool stuff ... and definitely the sort of party I would've loved to attend if, ya know, I was a lot cooler and stuff. Scope out the photos below. Anyone attend the premiere? Why, you'd get Tumbler as an Autobot, as seen above in a piece of fan art (click to enlarge) created by Jester and Jolin from Jester Pictures. I've seen some other Transformers-related stuff from these folks, but this is my favorite. There's Gotham City in the background, an Autobot signal in the sky -- it's all very cool stuff. The Tumbler, of course, is the name of the set of wheels Batman drives around in, and just seeing what it'd look like as an Autobot has me wishing this sort of thing could happen in real life. This guy looks cool, kind of a loner and I think I want the toy (but not Shia behind the wheel). Well, not exactly -- Ace's son was coming back for Ace Ventura 3, aka Ace Ventura Jr. Josh Flitter (Nancy Drew) had signed on to play the young offspring of the infamous pet detective. As much as we all could wish it's just a bad dream, Jim Carrey Online has posted a pic from the film, which you can see above.

Apparently, Ace came back to Florida after the adventures of the second installment, got married, and had a son. But then he went off for another remote case and never came back. So, his wife/widow moves on, and soon discovers that her 12-year-old son is becoming just like Ace -- right down to the ridiculous getups and the hair. But lucky for her, he's there to help when a baby panda is abducted and she's arrested for the crime -- Mini Ventura to the rescue!

This sounds so very bad... But you can see for yourself in September, if you'd even want to.

[via The Bad and the Ugly]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

First Look At James Cameron's 'Avatar' Alien?

Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, RumorMonger, Movie Marketing, Images

A glance at an alien from James Cameron's Avatar has popped up in the most unlikely of places -- a t-shirt. MarketSaw, a blog devoted to 3-D movies, snagged a photo (or the actual t-shirt itself, it's unclear which) of an official t-shirt raffled off to Avatar crew members. It bears the proud silhouette of a Na'vi and while it's not very detailed, I have to concur with CHUD's Devin Faraci that it looks far, far too much like a furry. The hype for this film is intense, and Cameron has been very vocal about the alien culture he was creating. I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't a two-legged cat/elf with a bow and arrow. We can't cast judgment yet, though. It is just a t-shirt but is this what you thought the Na'vi would look like?

Incidentally, aren't official movie t-shirts were handed out to crew members for free? The set of Avatar now sounds an awful lot like a job I had at a haunted house once. It was filthy and dangerous work, and our much anticipated Halloween bonus ended up being ... a t-shirt raffle. I really hope the crew members of a James Cameron movie made off better than that!

[via CHUD]

When you were watching Tony Stark construct his first Iron Man outfit in a desert cave, were you thinking: "Gee, I have some spare metal parts in my garage. Maybe I could make me one of those." Following that same impulse, Wired.com recently asked readers to submit their creations and has now posted the results, which you can check out over there.

Obviously, I'm not as knowledgeable about superheroes as some of our other writers and many of you reading this, but as I looked over the collection, my interest turned to incredulity. I mean: "Used Electronics Man"? "Captain Carpetfoam"? "Super David"? "Aquitards" (pictured)? Other than that last picture, Wired.com readers appear to have an aversion to spandex and leotards, which seem to be the building blocks for any good superhero costume

I would guess that our own Geek Beat columnist Elisabeth Rappe could whip up a better superhero costume with one hand tied behind her back. I was much more impressed by the Alamo Drafthouse Iron Man costume contest a couple of months ago. People in Austin evidently have a much greater grasp of their superheroes and/or have much more time on their hands. It's not a question of geography, though, it's a question of passion.

What do you think? Do you like the "winners" picked by Wired.com? Have you seen better fan-made (true) superhero costumes?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' Photo Gallery!

Filed under: Action, Drama, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Mystery & Suspense, Fandom, Family Films, Harry Potter, Remakes and Sequels, Images

Finally! This is the day you've all been waiting for (well, maybe not all of you -- but I'm sure there's a few of you, if not one or two of you ... or maybe a few imaginary readers too). Our friends over at Warner Bros. sent over a whole group of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince photos so that we can strap them all together and show them off in a big, bright shiny gallery. So, it is with great joy that I introduce you to Cinematical's official Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince photo gallery!

(I'll let you catch your breath from screaming so loud ....)

Done? Good. Below you'll find 16 gorgeous images from the film, all of which feature your favorite characters from the Potter universe. Me? All I want is a pair of those Luna Lovegood sunglasses. What's up with those? Maybe Warners will hand them out at Comic Con so I can run around, freaking people out. So trippy. So cool. Me want. Check out the gallery below.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince arrives in theaters on November 21.

Gallery: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Permalink | Email this | Comments

New 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' Pics!

Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Harry Potter, Remakes and Sequels, Images

Well, nothing is quite as cool as Luna Lovegood in her Spectrespecs, but there are a few more images from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince floating around the net (these are courtesy of Ace Showbiz). You can check out Rupert Grint's head-protected Quidditch getup at the dining table with Harry and Hermione above... (Can anyone tell me why he doesn't free his head while he eats? Does he fear that he'll lose his helmet?) And the other pic at AS has got Harry having a pow-wow with Professor Slughorn (Jim Broadbent), who is sporting an affably devilish facial expression.

This time around, Harry is in his 6th year at Hogwarts, and he finds "a potion book signed by the self-titled half-blood prince." There'll be scares for sure, as well as wackiness, and what you can see above -- some good rounds of Quidditch. This will all hit the screen November 21.

Permalink | Email this | Comments
