EXCLUSIVE: 'William S. Burroughs: A Man Within' Poster

Filed under: Documentary, Slamdance, Exhibition, Posters

As you all know, alongside Sundance there's Slamdance, and Cinematical has just received this exclusive poster for William S. Burroughs: A Man Within, which is part of Slamdance's Documentary Competition. Yony Leyser's doc details Burroughs' life as a Beat author and icon, and includes not only never-before-seen footage, but also a narration by Peter Weller, a soundtrack by Sonic Youth and the Patti Smith Group, and interviews with a whole lot of interesting folks like John Waters, Patti Smith, David Cronenberg, Amiri Baraka, Gus Van Sant... You can see the whole list on the poster in the gallery below, which includes not only the interview list, but of course -- a cat. As fans know: "A cat's rage is beautiful, burning with pure cat flame, all its hair standing up and crackling blue sparks, eyes blazing and sputtering. "

Burroughs at Slamdance + Ginsberg at Sundance ... it's a good, Beat-filled month to be in Utah. The film is screening Friday, January 22, 5:30 PM at the Main Screening Room, and Wednesday, January 27, 7:30 PM at the Gallery Screening Room.

First Impressions and One-Sheet for Polanski's 'The Ghost Writer'

Filed under: Action, Drama, Mystery & Suspense, Movie Marketing, Images, Posters

A few weeks ago, we got a sneak peek at Roman Polanski's newest film, The Ghost Writer, previously known as The Ghost, and we can finally loosen our lips a tad to talk about this thriller. (A full review of the final cut will be forthcoming the week of release.) Ewan McGregor plays a professional ghost writer known for more fluffy and financially successful books than serious political biographies. Nevertheless, he is brought in at the last minute to finish the memoirs of former British PM Adam Lang after the previous ghost writer -- and Lang's close friend -- mysteriously drowns before finishing the book.

Lang has sequestered himself on a little island in New England to finish his memoirs, but the handsome and athletic figurehead seems seems far less interested in politics than his savvy wife Ruth. The book's deadline isn't the only thing looming in this ominous, rainy little town.

Polanski has assembled a very strong cast with McGregor, Pierce Brosnan as Adam Lang, Kim Cattrall as Amelia, Lang's right-hand woman, and Olivia Williams in a stand-out performance as his wife Ruth. The Ghost Writer is a meticulously crafted, stylish film that brings an old Hollywood, noir sensibility to this story by Robert Harris that I liked more, the more I thought about it afterward.

Check out the high-res version of the poster below.

The Ghost Writer opens on February 19, 2010, in limited release.

Sundance Exclusive: Poster for 'Bass Ackwards'

One of the brand new additions to the Sundance Film Festival this year that a lot of people will be keeping an eye on is their NEXT category, which features 8 films that were made for either very little money or no money at all. I dig the idea behind the category, and the fact that Sundance is trying to once again return to celebrating the true spirit of independent film, and I look forward to seeing what these scrappy little show dogs bring to the table.

One such film is called Bass Ackwards, and today Cinematical has its exclusive poster premiere. The film follows a dude whose life sorta falls apart to the point where he rents a van and decides to drive across country to go move back in with his parents. It's on this road trip, though, that he meets some people who help him find a reason to love life again. One of the cool things about Bass Ackwards is that they struck a very unique deal to make the film available via multiple platforms (digital, VOD, DVD) the day after the festival ends, on February 1st. So make sure you keep an eye out for it.

In the meantime, you can read more about Bass Ackwards in our Sundance Primer on the film, and you can check out the full poster by clicking the image below.

Redbox Recalls Brittany Murphy 'Deadline' Poster

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Newsstand, Movie Marketing, Posters

Video retailer Redbox is issuing an emergency recall of the poster for Brittany Murphy's latest film Deadline. The image features the actress apparently dead in a bathtub, an eerie reminder of Murphy's own death, also in a bath, on Sunday, December 20.

Bumpshack reports that the recall of the image from over 19,000 kiosks nationwide will take 7 to 10 days to complete, and that the film's distributor is working on an alternate DVD cover image.

It's a display of remarkably good taste on Redbox's part, especially considering how specific the image is to Murphy's own death. I don't think anyone can make a strong case in favor of the original art.

New 'Iron Man 2' Poster: Whiplash!

Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Posters

While the world awaits word from the world premiere of James Cameron's Avatar, Paramount is combating that buzz with a little buzz of their own. The studio has just released a character poster for Mickey Rourke's Whiplash in Iron Man 2. This poster debut follows last week's one-sheet featuring Iron Man and War Machine standing back-to-back, and one imagines the studio will next debut a character poster for Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, as well as one for Sam Rockwell's Justin Hammer. And hey, if we're lucky enough maybe we'll get a solo poster for Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury (the fanboys would go wild for that).

Rumor has it that a trailer for Iron Man 2 will be attached to either James Cameron's Avatar or Sherlock Holmes later this month. Holmes seems like the logical choice, though screening it alongside Avatar will guarantee that the sequel's core fanbase will be there to devour it. In the poster above, you'll see Whiplash in what will most likely not be his full finished costume. He's standing in front of a wall full of Tony Stark-related newspaper articles, because, well, everyone knows the psychotic villains in movies need to obsessively collect newspaper clippings featuring their nemesis. It's just a rule, ya know?

Check out the full poster (courtesy of Apple) below. Iron Man 2 hits theaters on May 7th.

Look! New 'Tron: Legacy' Images and Poster!

Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Posters

Okay, so it's only two images, one still shot and a teaser poster from Tron: Legacy. Yet even that alone is enough to get this fanboy's adrenaline moving faster than a lightcycle. MSN Movies has a look at the two images, complete with a "The Game Has Changed" tagline on the new poster. And it most certainly has changed. I'm starting to worry that there won't be much actual Tron in this Tron. After all, Bruce Boxleitner has only "filmed a role" for the movie. Hopefully the story will explain it.

But hey, enough of my yakkin'! This is a new Tron movie, right? I still won't forget the electric feeling in the audience at Comic-Con two years ago when Disney snuck in the teaser trailer. There was a ripple of "What the?!" across the crowd, and then the feeling of me peeing my own pants. Tron was one of those pivotal movies in my childhood, and it's being revisited in some fashion. Now if I could just finish plans to build my own Recognizer and take over the world...

Check out the Tron: Legacy teaser poster right after the break.

The International 'Iron Man 2' Poster Subtracts a Suit

Filed under: Action, Paramount, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Images, Posters

Given the frenzy that surrounded the release of the first Iron Man 2 poster and the early stills, I thought it was fitting that we should end the week with a trilogy of marketing material. Empire has debuted the international version of the Iron Man 2 poster which you can see to the right in mini form. If you click on the link, it'll take you to a larger version.

While our poster gave you two Iron Man suits for the money, the international audience only gets one -- and Tony Stark isn't even wearing his helmet! We should pity the overseas people who will be denied that awesome look at War Machine. On the other hand, they get the soulful eyes of Robert Downey Jr. I feel like there's some kind of commentary on the difference between American audiences and international ones here. They're sold by an intense, human gaze whereas we're sold by big metal suits that hint at the promise of explosions.

Yes, I'm reading too much into it. Come on, I have to make my word count ... and I don't know what it says about me that this is the one I'd put on my wall. I'm a sucker for the man inside the suit, I guess.

Iron Man 2 hits American theaters on May 7, 2010, but the UK reportedly gets an earlier look on April 30, 2010. Truly devoted fans might want to book that plane ticket now.

The First 'Iron Man 2' Poster Appears!

Filed under: Action, Paramount, Fandom, Newsstand, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Posters

Marvel Studios, Paramount and Jon Favreau have given you an early Christmas present. Yahoo! Movies has debuted the first poster for Iron Man 2, and as cheesy as it is to go nuts over marketing, it's an awfully cool poster. It's their exclusive, so you'll have to click the picture to see the entire thing, but I've given you a tiny preview above.

The best part? Those of us who didn't get to see the pants-wetting footage at Comic-Con finally get a glimpse at War Machine! There's something deliciously geeky about the buddy cop stylings of this poster. I could live quite comfortably in a world where Iron Man 2 was something akin to a super-suited Lethal Weapon, couldn't you?

Of course, as nice as the poster is, it's no substitute for seeing these guys actually take flight. Faverau has hinted via Twitter that we might see the first Iron Man 2 trailer this Christmas, and that it'll be attached to that other Robert Downey Jr. franchise, Sherlock Holmes. Maybe if you're very good boys and girls, Santa will grant your wish, and we'll get it a few days before Holmes hits theaters. I can't think of a more festive way to ring in the holidays than with a flying hero of red and gold.

Exclusive 'Nine' Poster Premiere!

Filed under: Music & Musicals, Movie Marketing, Images, Trailers and Clips, Posters

Cinematical has just received this sexy new poster for the upcoming movie-musical Nine, directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago), and starring ... well, who isn't starring in this film? We've got the sensational, bound-to-be-nominated-for-Best-Actor-again Daniel Day-Lewis, followed by a plethora of gorgeous female co-stars like Nicole Kidman, Penélope Cruz, Kate Hudson, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench and Sophia Loren.

Based on the popular Broadway show, Nine follows a famous film director named Guido Contini (Day-Lewis) who's struggling to juggle all of the different dysfunctional personal and professional relationships in his life. You'd be hard-pressed to find an Oscar-related list that doesn't already include Nine as a shoe-in for multiple nominations, including Best Picture. Early reviews are already touting it as a must-see, and I can kinda see why -- this poster alone gives us at least five reasons right off the bat.

Nine is set to roll out into theaters in limited release on December 18th and nationwide on December 25th. Click on the image below to view the full poster, then head after the jump to watch the film's trailers.

Fan Rant: The Ridiculous, Disgusting Photoshopping Must End!

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Newsstand, Images, Posters

I love image editors like Photoshop. They've allowed me to make boring pictures funky, wipe the years off old and worn memories, and even get rid of the errant hair or blemish to make that nice photo truly shine. But I would give it all up and wipe my hands of them if it meant that the programs would be pulled out of the hands of Hollywood and the image-fixing machine.

We're getting bombarded by all sides. It's bad enough that lazy frakking poster creators actually shovel out horse poop like the embarrassingly terrible poster for The Takers, one that doesn't even bother trying to match the skin tones of the stars' heads with the stunt bodies, or thinks Paul Walker has massive Science of Sleep-like hands.

But we're also getting a never-ending onslaught of body de-hancements. I really can think of no better word for the folks like Ralph Lauren who are Photoshopping their models into sick, skeletal bodies. Adding to the pack is W Magazine, as BoingBoing shares. They scored an interview with Demi Moore and threw her up on the cover. While she may have discussed her dislike of being called a cougar, methinks she'd have more of an issue with what they did to her body. She's already ridiculously thin, but still, they edit. It looks like they tried to give her an "hourglass" shape (I use that term begrudgingly because it really doesn't apply when we're talking about skinny women who are Photoshopped to look curvy.), but worst of all -- they wiped out part of her already pencil-thin legs and were too lazy to make sure it matched. You can see part in the image above, look at the hip on the right, or in its full glory after the jump.
