Exclusive: 'Youth in Revolt' Poster Premiere!

Filed under: Comedy, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Images, Posters

Get ready all you Twispians, because Cinematical has just received this exclusive teaser poster for Youth in Revolt, which stars Michael Cera as the ultra-angsty (and legendary) Nick Twisp and is based on one of my favorite books of all time. Ah, what can you say about Youth in Revolt? The book, written by C.D. Payne, has amassed a huge, cult-like following partly because we can all relate to being an awkward teenager who'd do anything to capture the love of that special someone, and also because it's just damn funny.

For those who haven't read the book (seriously, read it -- the thing is hilarious), Youth in Revolt follows the misadventures of a love-sick teen who stops just short of destroying the world in order to win the love of one Sheeni Saunders. Cera plays said teen, Nick Twisp, while newcomer Portia Doubleday plays Sheeni. The film also boasts a pretty impressive supporting cast, including Steve Buscemi (as Nick's seedy, trailer-trash father), Zach Galifianakis, Justin Long, Fred Willard, Ray Liotta, Jean Smart and Ari Graynor. Needless to say, I cannot wait to see this cast bring some of these wacky, ridiculous (and memorable) characters to life, and I'm sure you Revolt fans are right there with me.

Exclusive: 'Big Fan' Poster Premiere!

Cinematical has just received this exclusive poster for Big Fan, one of my favorite films from this past Sundance Film Festival and a must-see for anyone who's ever taken their fandom a bit too far. Written and directed by The Wrestler screenwriter Robert Siegel, Big Fan stars Patton Oswalt as a lonely New York Giants fan living out his days as an overnight parking lot attendant on Staten Island whose obsession with his favorite football team leads to an unfortunate (and embarrassing) incident involving his favorite player -- forcing our big fan to choose between his team and the rest of his life.

From my Sundance review: "... this isn't a film about sports, it's a film about fandom -- about being so in love with something you go overboard and neglect your friends, your family and your life in order to feed your addiction. This isn't a comedy about the goofy football fan who gets off on chanting and screaming his team's name; it's instead a cold, lonely drama (with brief moments of awkward humor) about the neurotic football fan who'd give up everything (and I mean everything) to see his team make the playoffs."

Exclusive 'G.I. Joe' Character Poster - Ripcord

Filed under: Action, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Images, Posters

Cinematical has received this exclusive character poster for the upcoming live-action G.I. Joe movie, which is one of several debuting online today. Recent rumors suggested the film wasn't testing well and the studio wasn't all too happy with the final product, but we've been told otherwise and, in fact, people are really diggin' G.I. Joe so far. And I hope so, because I really want this film to be kick ass. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who grew up playing with the G.I. Joe action figures, making them square off against Star Wars figures only to have someone like Snake Eyes come down and kick the crap out of Luke Skywalker. (Hey, when it comes to action figures, that's just how I rolled back in the day.)

And hey, who can beat a cast that features Dennis Quaid, Sienna Miller, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Channing Tatum, Rachel Nichols, Christopher Eccleston and Marlon Wayans (among others)? You can catch the trailer for G.I. Joe over on Moviefone, and click the image below to see the full poster of Wayans' Ripcord character. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra hits theaters August 7.

Exclusive: 'Cold Souls' Poster Premiere!

Cinematical has just received this incredibly freaky exclusive poster for Cold Souls, which premiered at this past Sundance Film Festival and stars Paul Giamatti as an actor (appropriately named Paul Giamatti) who decides he wants to put some of his soul in storage in order to help better tackle a new role. Folks are already making comparisons to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Being John Malkovich, though this isn't a Charlie Kaufman film -- it was written and directed by first-timer Sophie Barthes, and it also stars Emily Watson and David Strathairn.

Reporting for Cinematical at Sundance, James Rocchi had this to say about the film: "Cold Souls is a beautifully shot film, and it also becomes more than a little bit moving, as Giamatti struggles with a question we've all asked ourselves: Is it possible to remove the burden of our soul without taking away the benefit of it? Is it the very weight we struggle under that makes us strong? Deep questions, but Cold Souls is also funny; there are fast, laugh-out-loud gags like Giamatti's compensation anxiety over the small size of his extracted soul ("It looks like a chickpea!") or the Russian trophy wife obsessed with getting an American actor's extracted soul so she can implant it and do better Soap Opera work."

Cold Souls arrives in theaters on August 7. Click the image below to check out the entire poster (which you simply must do, because this is easily one of my favorites of the year so far).

How'd That 'Hangover' Baby Get Glasses?

'The Hangover'

Like many people, I regularly bemoan the Photoshop-ization of movie posters without any real knowledge to back it up. Sure, I can tell when heads and bodies don't appear to belong together, or when the movie's stars are not in alignment, as though they were taken from two different photographs and smushed against one another. But where is the hard evidence?

A man named Sebo is my hero. He created a blog and invited readers to "look at movie posters and ads with the eye of a graphic designer." Sebo is an "Artistic Director" and graphic artist in Paris, France, and his blog has concrete examples of "duplications and other hidden actions on Photoshop in images." In the example posted above, he found the source image for the "baby with sunglasses" in the poster for The Hangover: the shot of Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, and Bradley Cooper in an elevator. The poster artist cropped out Helms, Cooper, and the elevator, changed the colors -- Galifianakis and the infant are clearly wearing the same t-shirts in both images -- added sunglasses, and voilà!

Sebo has a very keen eye: he found duplications of the sea in the poster for Becoming Jane, the two different images of a romantic couple merged into one in the poster for Downloading Nancy, the three different images combined for the Summer Hours international poster, and the disturbing way that Matthew McConaughey's face was altered for the Ghosts of Girlfriends Past poster, transforming his mug from movie-star handsome into plasticized perversity. It's all fascinating, and will make me start looking even closer at movie posters.

Exclusive: 'Shrink' Poster Premiere!

Click image below to view full poster

Cinematical has just received this exclusive poster for Shrink, which premiered at this past Sundance Film Festival to some pretty great buzz. Starring Kevin Spacey, Saffron Burrows, Keke Palmer, Mark Webber, Dallas Roberts and Robin Williams, Shrink follows "a psychiatrist (Spacey) whose boutique L.A. office, A-list clientele and best-selling pop psychology books form a thin layer of respectability over his ruined personal life, insurmountable grief, serious pot problem and a host of other crises," so says James Rocchi, who covered the film for Cinematical during Sundance and interviewed its star, Mr. Kevin Spacey.

Reminiscent of his character from American Beauty, Spacey (as the celebrity shrink-turned-pothead) delivers a performance here that's not to be missed, and the supporting cast takes what could've been another film about annoying egotistical Hollywood types from Los Angeles and turns it into one that's funny, serious, sweet, sincere and a little bit sideways. Definitely worth the watch. Check out the full synopsis after the jump and click below to view the full poster. Shrink hits theaters on July 24.

Fan Made: Movie Posters in LEGO

Filed under: Fandom, Images, Posters, Fan Made

LEGOs really are the perfect toy, aren't they? Think about it: no pesky gender divide about what boys and girls like, they thrive off of pure imagination, and they come in handy for some pretty geeky fan art. Now, we've already seen Silence of the Lambs done in LEGO, recreations of our favorite scenes, but now an industrious group of individuals at Speckyboy Design Magazine have compiled some great examples of movie posters that are made of those oh-so adaptable plastic building blocks. There's a poster here for everybody, including a few nods to the current summer movie season (my favorite just might be the Inglorious Basterds recreation courtesy of Dr. Sinister -- it's not easy to find a bat that small), but we've also got some classics like Jaws by LegoLyons, and Rocky by Marcin ImpreSariO to round out the mix.

So it just goes to show that with a little imagination and a few plastic blocks, there is no limit to what a fan can, or will do. Check out some of our favorites in the gallery below.

First Poster for Twilight Saga's 'New Moon'

Click image below to view entire poster

Summit Entertainment has released the first official movie poster for The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which, as you can see above, is all sorts of mysterious and daunting and, like, "Pshhh, fine -- go with him; I don't care!" Thankfully the studio didn't throw up the film's title in a different font and, instead, decided to give us some actual characters this time. And it's not hard to figure out what the main to-do in this film is; the poster makes that pretty clear. Bella (Kristen Stewart) is devastated when her boo Edward (Robert Pattinson) up and bolts ... and so, naturally, she begins to grow closer to someone else. That someone is Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), and Jacob comes from a long line of ancient werewolves.

(I know, right -- this chick Bella likes to swing with the weird ones, totally. Tell me about it.)

Of course, as Bella grows closer to Jacob (and the werewolves, who are the vampires' mortal enemies), Bella soon finds her loyalties tested ... and something tells us she can't just drop both these dudes for Kenny, the video store clerk and part-time Nintendo champion. (Note: The character of Kenny does not exist in the books, but I'd be glad to write him in for the next film if Summit will let me.) Check out the full poster below, and watch the MTV Movie Awards on May 31 to see the first full clip from New Moon, which hits theaters on November 20th.

Exclusive: 'Chéri' Poster Premiere

Filed under: Movie Marketing, Images, Posters

Click image below to view full poster

Cinematical has just received this exclusive poster for Chéri, which stars Michelle Pfeiffer as a seductress who knows exactly which buttons to push and when. The film also features a Dangerous Liaisons reunion, with not only Pfeiffer in the lead, but Stephen Frears directed and Christopher Hampton wrote the screenplay. The film, which is based on the novels by Colette and is set in 1920s Paris, follows the son of a courtesean who retreats into a fantasy world after he's forced to end his relationship with the older woman who seduced and educated him in the ways of love.

Sounds to me like Pfeiffer belongs in the running for Cougar of the Year, and that's just fine by me -- it's always a pleasure to watch the gal let her hair down and take on a more sensual role. In my opinion, we need more women over 50 seducing younger men in our movies -- why not? Chéri also stars Kathy Bates and Rupert Friend, and it's set to arrive in theaters (in limited release) on June 26.

How to Sell Vengeful Aussie 'Horseman'

Filed under: Drama, Independent, Deals, Distribution, Movie Marketing, Images, Cinematical Indie, Posters

'The Horseman' poster montage

In the intense Australian drama The Horseman, Peter Marshall stars as a man devastated by the news of his daughter's death. His grief turns to unbridled anger when he learns that she was raped by several men before overdosing on drugs, and he sets out to kill those responsible. Media 8 Entertainment has acquired worldwide sales rights, according to Inside Film, and will be showing the film to buyers at the Cannes Market this week.

As I wrote when the film played at SXSW: "It doesn't feel accurate to describe The Horseman as a 'thriller' because there's nothing in it that provides typical action movie thrills ... It's a movie to be endured rather than enjoyed, which doesn't mean the film lacks artistry or restraint. Writer/director Steven Kastrissios creates a pulverizing experience, yet for all the blood, broken bones, and brutality, The Horseman holds back at key moments." Kastrissios told Inside Film that the SXSW screening generated considerable interest among "film executives from all over the world."

Media 8 Entertainment designed a new poster, which includes a quote from our own Scott Weinberg (even if it is for another site). But how do you sell a violent revenge drama? For comparison's sake, you can see two of the original rough poster concepts developed by the filmmakers above -- the full set of 18 can be viewed at the official site -- alongside the new poster (at the far left). Which one sells it best?
