Is Warner Bros. Beginning its 'Batman 3' Viral Marketing?
Filed under: Site Announcements, New Releases, RumorMonger, Exhibition, Movie Marketing

Christopher Nolan's Inception comes out this Friday, and I know lots of people are excited about it because it looks great (check out Todd's review here). There are, however, groups of fans who are excited about it for an entirely different reason as well -- with Inception out of the way, Nolan can finally devote his full attention to the film Bat-maniacs have been clamoring for since the end of The Dark Knight: a third Batman film.
Over the past few years we've heard countless rumors about the project. They've all turned out to be false, but we do know Nolan is working on prepping the third film. Now, website io9 is reporting that Warner Bros. has registered a slew of new Batman domain names. What does this mean? Is the studio laying the groundwork for a viral marketing campaign for the next movie? It's possible. Read more after the jump ...

The nightmares don't just take place on Elm Street, they also take place in the laboratory of Dr. Heiter. Seems like all eyes were on The Human Centipede this weekend, the must-see shocker from director Tom Six that's slicing audiences right down the middle into "love it" and "hate it" camps. Horror Squad offered one of the first looks at The Human Centipede, way back in October, and that's just one of the reasons you should be visiting Horror Squad -- they've got their finger on the pulse of horror. If you haven't been reading, here's what you've been missing...
- Alison Nastasi cuts right to the core of The Human Centipede in her in-depth review.
- What is "the thing in the cage"? It's easy to explain away, but it's still the stuff of nightmares.
- The Horror Squad Movie Club examines Don Coscarelli's adaptation of the Joe R. Lansdale story Incident On and Off a Mountain Road.
- What characters should have survived in the cult classic The Car?
- The makers of Black Devil Doll return to sink to new levels of cinematic depravity with Bottomfeeder.
- Brian Salisbury gets a Parasite, and only a young Demi Moore can help!

'Piranha 3D' Promoted Virally With NSFW Porn Website
Filed under: Horror, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Site Announcements, The Weinstein Co., NSFW, Movie Marketing
If you were to "accidentally" stroll upon the NSFW website for Wild Wild Girls you'd think it was just some Girls Gone Wild rip-off. You also might think, if you happened to notice him among all the naked breasts, that Jerry O'Connell has hit really hard times to have to endorse softcore porn like this. But O'Connell's appearance on the site is as his Joe Francis-like character from the upcoming horror movie Piranha 3D. Hard to tell, I know, since there doesn't seem to be any reference to the movie on the site. Unless you count the ad for an energy drink called Piranha. Fortunately (I guess) a Film Drunk reader discovered the site, as well as the Facebook page (featuring some photos of wet t-shirt contest emcee Eli Roth). There's also a Twitter account for those of you who want links to boob-related stuff. Sorry to those of you interested in the prehistoric man-eating fish part of Piranha 3D, maybe there will be a less nudity-filled viral campaign in the months leading up to the movie's August release.Speaking of the actual release, I'm going to go out on on a limb here and guess that Piranha 3D will be Rated R and feature a lot of boobies and wet t-shirts. And all you minors reading this will have to buy a ticket for Step Up 3D in order to sneak into it. But if the nude college girls are all you're interested in, the viral site is pretty easily accessible. And for that, I can see Dimension Films getting some flak from parents. Interestingly enough, exposure of this campaign comes only days after our own Jenni Miller looked at viral promos gone horribly wrong. Such as a recent controversial torture game tied to A Nightmare on Elm Street and a Running Scared-based oral sex game from a few years ago. Is stuff like this Wild Wild Girls site really that necessary for the promotion of a movie like Piranha 3D? I know the trailer doesn't make it look all that great, but who is really going to see it because of a porno tie-in? If anything, fans of the viral site will be wanting the advertised DVDs titled "Panty Paradise" and "Sex Crazed College Co-Eds" instead.

Exclusive: Cinematical Decides Not to Run an April Fool's Joke This Year!
NEW YORK CITY -- After months of anticipation, regret, denial, and self-sacrifice, Cinematical has decided not to run an April Fool's Day joke this year. The decision was made a little before midnight on March 31st, with word coming from Managing Editor Scott Weinberg by way of a press release that was never actually sent out to anybody. He says, "I fully support Cinematical's anti-4-1 campaign. I believe that what we do at this website is of the utmost cultural importance, and I'd hate to send a reader away believing that Skeet Ulrich was just cast as Rhett Butler in the sci-fi Gone with the Wind reboot. "Wit" has its place, I suppose, but it certainly does not belong on a publication that celebrates the fine art of cinema."Let's face it: April Fool's jokes are lame. For the first couple hours, you're hit with all these fantastical headlines full of stories you may have wished for during your last acid trip at a Blockbuster video. You click in, absorbing the text -- re-tweeting it like crazy to your friends before realizing -- d'oh! -- you've been had. (If only you'd looked at the calendar.) J.J. Abrams really isn't making the Cloverfield monster the villain in the next Star Trek movie. It sucks; your Twitter followers will think you're kind of an idiot, and you'll feel ashamed for maybe getting excited at the possibility of John Cho hanging from the Cloverfield monster's neck, swinging through the air while another character yells from the distance, "Hold on! He has to have a weak spot!"
We here at Cinematical want our readers to know that you're our weak spot. We don't want to waste your time trying to be funny or insightful or snarky-smart; we just want you to know that we value your attention and think it would be a shame wasting it on some dumb fake news story. We're also urging other movie websites to follow along and end this stupid annual tradition once and for all. This isn't fun. We're not funny. Let's stop lying to people; it's not right. Would Mad Magazine run an April Fool's Day joke? I rest my case.
We're better than that ... so let's prove it. Seriously, sign our petition!
