Toronto '08 Announces the 'Midnight Madness' Slate!

Filed under: Action », Animation », Comedy », Foreign Language », Horror », Independent », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Thrillers », Mystery & Suspense », Toronto International Film Festival »

OK, so I missed my flight to San Diego this morning and I've had a really rotten day, but there's always a small silver lining, right? In the movie world there is: JUST announced (like, within the last few minutes!) is the Toronto Film Festival's Midnight Madness '08 line-up. And, as usual, it looks pretty damn awesome.

I've heard some really good things about Pascal Laugier's Martyrs, Franck Vestiel's Eden Log, and Jon Hewitt's Acolytes -- plus I've been itchin' to see JT Petty's horror-western The Burrowers for over a year now! Other selections include Pracha Pinkaew's Chocolate, Toshio Lee's Detroit Metal City, and Mark Hartley's Not Quite Hollywood. Click right here for all ten of TIFF's Midnight picks --and of course you can expect all sorts of expansive festival coverage once TIFF rolls out in early September. Woo!

(Note: Rocchi got all excited about JCVD being chosen as one of the Midnight selections, which is a title I neglected to mention the first time around. Ditto Sexykiller and Deadgirl.)

( Also announced today: Toronto's Wavelengths and Sprockets Family Zone selections. )

Tribeca 2008: The Wrap-Up

Filed under: Tribeca », Festival Reports »

I know I poked some fun at New York City in some of my earlier posts, but I'd by lying if I said I didn't have a good time covering the Tribeca Film Festival this year. (I ate lots of good food!) Davis and I hung out for a bit here and there, but we were mostly knee-deep in work-stuff -- so a hearty thanks to Joel Keller of TV Squad for stepping in and helping out with the coverage. (Cinematical newbie Eric Kohn also threw in an assist!) Additional thanks to all the Tribeca folks -- from the press office people to the theater volunteers and every one in between -- who made the week run so smoothly.

Here you'll find a recap of all our Tribeca coverage. Reviews, interviews, live reports and a few random pieces of stupidity from yours truly. Then after the jump we'll remind you of all the Tribeca 2008 award winners. And then we can all have some milk and cookies.

More coverage and a full list of this year's award winners after the jump ...

SXSW Announces Full 2008 Slate

Filed under: SXSW », Festival Reports »

Whenever a new film festival slate goes up, obviously I go right to the horror section. And (thanks Matt!) it certainly looks like South By Southwest 2008 has its share of nasty surprises for me, but I'm also pretty excited about the rest of their line-up too. In addition to juicy titles like Dance of the Dead, Southern Gothic and (ahem) Registered Sex Offender, we'll also get to see promising stuff like Stop-Loss, Battle in Seattle, 21, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Shine a Light, Run Fatboy Run, Harold and Kumar 2, and a whole bunch more.

Plus SXSW is well-known for their documentary slates (regular doco and music-oriented doco), their attention to Texas cinema, and (of course) their ability to throw one helluva midnight show. The full 2008 SXSW film list (complete with external reviews!) can be enjoyed after the jump, or you can feel free to click through the official SXSW website. This year it looks to be me, Jette, Erik and Eric on the scene (with a few surprise contributors!), so if you can't make the festival, rest assured that the Cine team will bring you all the sights, sounds and smells. (Yes, smells. The BBQ is that damn good.)

Oh, and the film section of SXSW (they also do music and interactive festivals at the same time) runs from March 7 to 15. If you see one of us there, definitely say hi. Our secret code phrase will be "Dude. Cinematical is so awesome." And now, on with the movies...
