Casting Bites: Russo, Chonacas, and Beaumon
Filed under: Drama », Thrillers », Casting », Family Films »
Cannes deals may be tepid, but Variety has a whole bunch of new casting notices. Here's part one:Years ago, one of James Russo's first gigs was as a Convenience Store Robber in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Since then, he's popped up in Beverly Hills Cop, The Blue Iguana, Donnie Brasco, and Paris. Now he has nabbed the part of Walter Dietrich in Michael Mann's Public Enemies. Dietrich was a man who John Dillinger came across while in the Michigan City penitentiary -- he was teaching Dillinger and others "the methods of Herman 'Baron' K. Lamm, a Prussian army officer turned highly successful bank robber."
But that's not the only getaway in this batch. Katie Chonacas, who grabbed a part in The Code last year, has signed on for a supporting role in the Timothy Olyphant and Milla Jovovich flick A Perfect Getaway. There's no word on who she'll play in the film, which focuses on two honeymooners (Steve Zahn and Jovovich) who get stalked by some killers (Olyphant and Kiele Sanchez).
Lastly, in this batch, there's youngin' Sterling Beaumon. The kid, who has popped up in shows like 7th Heaven and Heroes, has scored himself the starring role in a big-screen adaptation of R.L. Stine's Mostly Ghostly. The film focuses on a kid name Max (Beaumon), who has ghostly friends. The film also stars LiLo's little sister Ali Lohan.
Casting Bites from 'Baby-O' to 'When in Rome'

And here are yet another round of small casting bites, courtesy of Variety:- You might not be familiar with the name Frederic von Anhalt, but you're certainly familiar with his famous wife -- the one and only Zsa Zsa Gabor. While he only has a few acting gigs to his name, the man has scored a part as "a corrupt Las Vegas casino owner" in Charlie Matthau's upcoming flick Baby-O, which has begun filming in Las Vegas and LA -- the same locales used in Matthau's 2007 production, Mikey & Dolores. As for von Anhalt, this seems to be a side gig to his many adult adoptions. According to IMDb, Frederic and Zsa Zsa have adopted a handful of grown men lately.
- Chris Hemsworth, meanwhile, looks to be your regular sort of actor. Aside from his high-profile gig playing Captain Kirk's father in Star Trek, he is also looking for A Perfect Getaway. This is that Hawaiian thriller with Timothy Olyphant, Milla Jovovich, Steve Zahn, and Kiele Sanchez, which you can find out more about here. Hemsworth gets to play some dude named Kale.
- Kale is not one of the stalkees in his gig, but I don't know if the same can be said for Arlen Escarpeta, who you might remember from We Are Marshall, or from The Ten, where he got Oliver Platt's Arnold Schwarzenegger impersonation as a father figure. Arlen has picked up "a lead role" in the remake of Friday the 13th, which is shooting now down in Austin. Will he survive, or will he be a victim?
- Finally, there's Alexis Dziena, who has nabbed a gig as a sister to Kristen Bell in When in Rome. Dziena will player Bell's younger sister "who's getting married on a whim." This is just one of many roles the actress has nabbed lately. She was in Fool's Gold, and just wrapped a part in Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist.
Milla Jovovich Joins 'The 4th Kind'

Now that Milla Jovovich might not be returning for another shot at the Resident Evil franchise, it's nice to see that she isn't still pining away for another chance at playing Alice. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Jovovich has signed to star in the real- life mystery, The 4th Kind. The film was written and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, a first time writer/director, who started his career as an assistant to Joe Carnahan (once again proving that in this business it's who you know). There aren't many details about the story so far, but what we do know is that the film is based on a series of mysterious disappearances that took place in Alaska. The unsolved mystery of what happened to these people over the last 40 years has often been blamed on a government cover-up, or worse. Judging from the title, I'm going to go with aliens on this one. Kind will most likely use some of the juicier conspiracy theories as a starting point for the story. Jovovich will play an investigator sent to the remote town to uncover the story behind these unexplained abductions.
Milla Jovovich Joins Zahn & Olyphant on 'A Perfect Getaway'

Not very long ago, Jessica told you that Steve Zahn and Timothy Olyphant had signed up to play in David Twohy's A Perfect Getaway, but it seems like the writer / director was scouting for actresses over the weekend. Looks like Milla Jovovich will be paired up with Zahn (the lucky dog) and Ms. Kiele Sanchez will be hanging with Mr. Olyphant. (Genre fans will remember David Twohy from flicks like The Arrival, Pitch Black, Below, and ... The Chronicles of Riddick.)According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Jovovich and Sanchez join Timothy Olyphant and Steve Zahn in the thriller, which revolves around a newlywed couple on their honeymoon in Hawaii who run into two hikers who turn out to be vicious killers." Call me psychic, but I'm betting it's the Olyphant / Sanchez couple who do the stalking and the Zahn / Jovovich duo who do the running ... although it'd probably be more interesting the other way around.
The whole gang will begin shooting A Perfect Getaway next week in Puerto Rico and Hawaii. Tough gig. As far as the flick is concerned, I'm just a bit skeptical. Haven't we had enough of the Americans Terrorized Overseas thrillers yet? Then again (Chronicles notwithstanding) I'm a big fan of the Twohy, so I suppose one more dose of Passport Purgatory won't be all that bad.
Steve Zahn Will Make 'A Perfect Getaway'

To be honest, I'm always a little surprised that Steve Zahn managed to carve out a dramatic acting career. I can't help but think 'Studs' whenever I look at him, but since Rescue Dawn I'm not the only one who discovered that Zahn can handle the 'grittier' side of life. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Zahn has signed to star alongside Timothy Olyphant (Hitman) in the psychological thriller, A Perfect Getaway.David Twohy will direct from his own script about a honeymooning couple who become the targets for a pair of killers. Zahn will play the husband and Olyphant (true to form) will play one of the violent psychos. There is no word yet on the partners for each of our leading men, but it's not like its going to be all that difficult to fill the parts of 'Frightened Wife" and "Psycho Killer". Twohy made his name as a screenwriter and has made some good and some not so-good movies. Twohy has directed in the past, but with the exception of Pitch Black, there isn't much to recommend some of his previous endeavors.
Zahn already has three other films in various stages of production. First up will be two comedies, a baseball flick titled Calvin Marshall and then a romantic comedy with the very unfunny title of Management. A Perfect Getaway is set to start filming on location in Puerto Rico and Hawaii starting at the end of this month, but there is no word of a release date. Stay tuned to Cinematical for any news that comes our way.
Timothy Olyphant is Looking to Make a 'Getaway'

They say the whole marriage thing will be the best day of your life -- followed by a sweet and romantic vacation that will start off your many years together. The same "they" also claim that soon after -- your sex life will plummet, work will keep you busy, and the kids will run you off your feet. So, you should enjoy those moments while you can. But what if you can't? Is your future more doomed if you don't have the proper send-off to happily wedded life? What if your honeymoon isn't full of romantic bliss? Do you have a chance if someone tries to kill you while you're getting sun and sexy time? The Hollywood Reporter has posted that Timothy Olyphant, fresh off his own killing gig, is set to star in an upcoming thriller called A Perfect Getaway. The brainchild of writer/director David Twohy, who previously brought us the likes of Critters 2, The Fugitive, Waterworld, G.I. Jane, Pitch Black, and The Chronicles of Riddick, Getaway will star Olyphant as "a newlywed whose Hawaiian honeymoon becomes a nightmare when he and his bride are stalked by two killers." That really sucks. I wonder if they're being stalked for something that happened before, or if in their newly-wedded bliss, they muck up something for the killers. Whatever the reason, it's certainly a crappy case of luck. There's no word on Tim's lucky co-star yet, but with production set to begin March 17th in Puerto Rico, we should hear more soon.
