Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine Head for Horror

I always wondered what would happen if you'd throw a space pilot pirate wannabe in a dilapidated shack with a technology-humping soul catcher. Apparently, it will make college kids think the poor saps are dangerous killers.

The Hollywood Reporter posts that Alan Tudyk (Serenity, Dodgeball) and Tyler Labine (Control Alt Delete, Reaper) have signed on to star in a new indie horror comedy called Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. The brainchild of writer/director Eli Craig (who also happens to be Sally Field's son), the film centers on Tucker (Tudyk) and Dale (Labine), "two good-natured hillbillies mistakenly accused of being psycho killers by a group of college kids camping at the same lake where the hillbillies have just acquired a dilapidated cabin as their 'summer home.'" Where the horror fits in is anyone's guess.

Chelan Simmons
(Kyle XY) blogged last month about the project and writes: "The movie is a horror/comedy ... kinda like Shaun of the Dead" -- well, first she compared it to Dawn of the Dead, until a reader wondered how that was funny -- so that doesn't really help suss out the horror. Since the movie is shooting in Calgary, Alberta, much of the cast is composed with Canadian actors, topped with the clueless Cerie from 30 Rock -- Katrina Bowden.

Whatever this strange project is, Tudyk in a horror comedy sounds good to me, especially if he does turn out to be a killer and channels some of that Dollhouse creepiness.

Are Plans for 'Serenity 2' in the Works?

The ever-lovable, wonder-writer/director Joss Whedon needs to get a few projects on the go. After running himself ragged with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, he brought the world a small helping of Firefly, a pretty kick-arse movie adaptation Serenity, almost made Wonder Woman, and continued the story of the slayers in comic form. Having handed over the reigns on that, what's left to do? It's not like Veronica Mars is still around for him to guest on! Well, he's still working on his supernatural Goners script after getting a bunch of studio notes, but Whedon never takes it easy, so it's not a surprise that after reviving his first beloved series, there's rumors of a Serenity 2.

Oh yes, the Browncoats might come back -- not necessarily to the big screen, but to DVD. While the film's box office didn't live up to expectations, it has, unsurprisingly, had a heck of a stint on disc. Moviehole recently chatted with Alan Tudyk (Wash), and he said: "They had to put [the new DVD] out because they've been selling out of the other one, and so Universal's like 'So, let's do another one.' And now... there's now a chance there's going to be another movie." Well, this is just about the most solid Whedon rumor you can get. While he always has a million potential projects swimming in his head, it's big news if the studios can see an audience and get interested in the idea.

So, does this make you giggle with schoolgirl-like glee? If so, keep picking up those DVDs and we might just see Serenity fly again! But heck, they could even keep the ship docked the entire time and show a lot of Summer Glau butt-kicking. Who wouldn't be up for more of that!?

First Two Official Pics From '3:10 To Yuma' Released

James Mangold's Cop Land is a stellar example of an "urban western," a contemporary film that beautifully updates the genre's plots and themes -- without the saddles n' spurs that Hollywood seems to be so afraid of these days. You could tell by watching that wildly underrated flick that Mangold had studied a lot of the classic westerns, and I can't wait to see his take on the real deal. 3:10 to Yuma stars Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, a potentially explosive acting duo. It's a remake of the 1957 Glenn Ford/Van Heflin film. The plot's a simple one: Outlaw leader Ben Wade (Crowe) is captured and awaiting the 3:10 train to Yuma for his trial. "Small-time rancher" Dan Evans (Bale) agrees to hold the outlaw, a battle of wills ensues, and in true western style, the whole thing culminates in a shootout, which Mangold says "has the potential to be one of the great movie gunfights." Ben Foster, Peter Fonda, and Alan Tudyk will costar.

Here we have the first two official pictures from the film. As you can see, Crowe and Bale are in full-on intense mode, and I would imagine these shots are taken from the climactic showdown. If you want to really have some fun, put the pictures up so they're facing each other and make your own gunfight. Feel free to add voices and sound effects, I won't judge. You can take the 3:10 to Yuma this October.
