Matt Reeves Directing Secret 'Cloverfield' Movie, Source Says

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Deals », Paramount », RumorMonger », Fandom », DIY/Filmmaking »

Today brings more news about that mysterious J.J. Abrams project Cloverfield, which recently unleashed a bizarre kickass trailer in front of Transformers. Here's what we know so far: The film is due out on January 18, 2008, it's produced by J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot (Lost, Alias), Paramount Pictures is distributing, and it's apparently a monster movie shot from the POV of handheld video cameras. After viewing said trailer, our own Scott Weinberg said it looks like "The Blair Witch Project meets the Godzilla remake." Well, now, AICN say they know who's directing Cloverfield (or whatever the hell it's called): Matt Reeves. Who? Well, believe it or not, but Reeves was an executive producer and writer on the TV show Felicity, and he also helped the Mark Wahlberg flick The Yards and Under Siege 2. His only big-screen directing gig to date was on The Pallbearer, which he also co-wrote.

Keep in mind that Cloverfield is not the title of this movie; I believe it's the top secret name they're using right now to hide the real title, if there is one. AICN also claims that Drew Godard (Lost, Alias, Buffy) penned the script, and that the featured monster is something called The Parasite. With all the Lost folks involved, some fans speculated that Cloverfield could be a companion piece of sorts to the show. Personally, I'm in the camp that thinks this is a totally new flick -- I just can't understand all this secrecy. What do they have to hide? Is all this hush hush just a plot to drum up internet buzz for the project, or is there another reason why no one will talk about it? Regardless, I think a monster movie told from the POV of folks running around with video cameras has the potential of being a really fun ride, so long as the damn camera doesn't shake repeatedly and give me a headache. We already know there will be a host of major Star Trek XI announcements later this month at ComicCon, so look for more Cloverfield info to be revealed at that time.

Abrams Puts the Nix on Alias Movie Rumors

It happens every time a successful show ends a television run (by cancellation or just of natural causes), especially a popular sci-fi or fantasy series. The inevitable "there is going to be a movie sequel" rumor pops up and spreads like wildfire. Alias, of course, has been no exception. Practically as soon as the popular series finale was announced rumors of a film began circulating. Creator J.J. Abrams said the show already has a fantastic ending (in a two-hour episode) and he's perfectly happy with the way the show is going out.  When asked about a movie, he replied by saying "I think at the moment, right now Alias is sort of going to rest in just the right way, so I think that it's the right way for it to go out."

Joss Whedon doomed all television series creators for all time after Firefly became a motion picture. The successful petitioning of his crazy, devoted fans brought a movie sequel to a finished TV franchise, and the fans perceive themselves -- rightfully so -- as having a big part in making that happen. This means for the next several decades every TV director will have to answer a ton of movie sequel questions from industry writers and fans alike.

Alias Star Jennifer Garner Eyeing The Kingdom

Filed under: Drama », Thrillers », Casting », Universal »

It looks as if Jennifer Garner is in talks to join the cast of The Kingdom, a political thriller about an FBI team investigating the bombing of American workers in the Middle East. Directed by Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights) the Universal Pictures film already has Jamie Foxx and Chris Cooper on board. Given the plot outline, it looks like Garner would be in familiar government super agent territory, considering her long tenure as the indefatigable Sydney Bristow (an agent who knows both Krav Maga, electromagnetic lock picking and Pilates!). With Alias airing its final show on May 22, I'm just happy for Garner: maybe now she'll be able to eat a donut every once in a while.

Alias Lives on in Movies?

Many fans were devastated by the news that primetime spy-thriller favorite Alias will be ending its run this spring. The surreal/sci-fi nature of the series allowed it to control a strong audience among the coveted geek crowd, but apparently that was not enough. However, the strength of the fanbase is not underestimated by Jeff Pinkner, executive producer of Alias. He recently suggested that the Alias universe has a strong chance of living on; through a spinoff series (most likely focusing around some of the show's villians) or possibly even a big screen debut starring Jennifer Garner.

I don't tend to watch much television, and thus am not particularly familiar with Alias. I am aware, however, that many people whose opinions I generally trust on such matters are rather enamoured with the show. There have got to be some fans out there in our reader audience- convince me that this is a good idea, readers. While you're at it, convince me that I should go rent a season or two of the show and see what all the fuss is about.
