Scenes We Love: Pootie Tang
Filed under: Comedy », Fandom », Trailers and Clips », Scenes We Love »
Pootie Tang, the hallucinatory story of a "musician/actor/folk hero of the ghetto" who literally speaks his own language, is like a secret handshake among a certain subset of film nerd. Yes, possibly the stoner kind, but not necessarily – it's just one of those movies where maybe you're out for a drink with someone you don't know that well and you drop a Pootie-ism ("I'm gonna sine your pitty on da runny kine!" or even a simple "Sadatay!") and the other person is like, "You like Pootie Tang? I love Pootie Tang!" And suddenly you've bonded as deeply as if you just found out you were born at the same hospital.
Pootie Tang, which was written and directed by Louis C.K. (whose writing for "The Chris Rock Show" and "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" earned him several Emmy nominations and who is also in The Invention of Lying), stars Lance Crouther as a sort of Ubermensch. He's a lady-killer whose magnetism makes women literally claw his clothes off. He fights evil with his awesome belt. He can sing, he can act, he hangs out with Missy Elliott, and he goes up against The Man who's trying to bring us all down, specifically by using Pootie's image to endorse products that would harm today's youth.
The movie is full of very funny people like Jennifer Coolidge, Andy Richter, David Cross, and naturally Chris Rock, but my favorite is Wanda Sykes, who plays Biggie Shorty. Biggie Shorty likes to wear outrageous outfits and matching wigs while jamming out to her headphones on the street, and she is madly in love with Pootie.
Watch This: Andy Richter's Car "Commercial"

Confession: Originally this post was going to be on the Lex Luthor Bailout video that's going around online starring Mad Men's Jon Hamm in a really bad (and visible) bald cap. Yeah, it's cute, it's funny and it's got a lot of Superman references -- but then this puppy came along and cracked me the hell up. So if you want to watch the Lex Luthor video too, you can do so after the jump. We're good like that -- we hook it up.
That said, I know this Andy Richter video is probably better suited for a television blog (like maybe TV Squad), but since it's not really a commercial, I guess we can kinda sorta count it as a short that pokes fun at all those lame car commercials you barely pay any attention to, but can't stand nonetheless. This doesn't really need a whole lotta setup, except to say that Andy Richter is awesome and this is priceless. Check it out below ...
New Semi-Pro Pics!

Some say that Will Ferrell movies are just the same flick over and over again, but since I always get a giggle from them, I really can't complain. Movieweb is now hosting 10 new photos from Ferrell's latest sports-comedy, Semi-Pro. Farrell plays Jackie Moon, the owner and coach of the American Basketball Association's Flint Michigan Tropics. In hopes of getting the team status in a little organization called the NBA, he must turn his team into winners.Semi-Pro was written by Scot Armstrong, who was also behind Road Trip, Old School, and The Heartbreak Kid. Armstrong is also hard at work on the sequel to Old School, but this time it will be without *
So while some of these pictures have already been released back in November, this latest set has a few new images plus your chance to get a look at Ferrell's 'fro in hi-res. So far, there have already been a few poster releases, a teaser, and the ever-popular "red band" trailer. But, let's be truthful here, if you are a Ferrell fan you are going to want to jump straight to the 'R' trailer for all the good jokes. Semi-Pro opens in theaters on February 29th.
*Correction: Ferrell will forever by haunted by the nickname Frank "the Tank", not Hank.
The 'Weather Girl' Nabs Mark Harmon and Tricia O'Kelley

You just can't trust that pesky Mark Harmon, even if he is with the NCIS and used to be a doctor. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he's just signed on to a new indie romcom that has him cheating on his girlfriend. He and Tricia O'Kelley (Luke's ex-wife on Gilmore Girls) have both nabbed roles in Blayne Weaver's new flick, Weather Girl. So far, the film, which will begin production this month, is bringing together a pretty decent collection of talent, all to come together under that "crazy woman" cliche. As THR describes it, the film's about "a Seattle morning show weathergirl (O'Kelley) who, after learning her boyfriend (Harmon) has cheated on her, is fired after freaking out on-air. Forced to move in with her little brother and to cope with being 35, single, and unemployed, she begins an unlikely romance with a younger man -- her brother's best friend." Wacky comedies are good and all, but can't we move away from flicks where the girl goes crazy in public and then flips about being single? At the very least, have her deal with it with some discretion! Heck, in comparison, Ingrid Bergman was completely discreet in Indiscreet. Anyway...
Most of the cast is now in place. It looks like Harmon might be the host of the television show, because Kaitlin Olson is listed as his co-host. Patrick J. Adams will be Byron, the younger man that O'Kelley falls for. Jane Lynch will play the manager of a restaurant where O'Kelley goes to work, Marin Hinkle and Alex Kapp Horner have also signed on, and Andy Richter and Blair Underwood are finishing up negotiations for roles as well. Beyond that, there's also two Veronica Mars alums to top things off. Ryan Devlin (Mercer) will play her younger brother, and Enrico Colantoni (Keith) is also attached.
